Description

When a seemingly normal world suddenly rediscovers that it is full of magic, and has four races of Eedon Rath-ni, either Eagles, Ravens, Dragons, or Hawks, who each take riders known as Dravens, with special abilities in either combat, magic, spying, or can turn into a beast, it challenges everything they know about their own world as they know it. This happens, when a notorious terrorist named Christian Knowles assassinates the Emperor of Iishrem, Sax Drugren the 12th in quite dramatic fashion at the center of his seat of power, it ignites a war between the two continental superpowers of Allirehem and Iishrem that has been building for the last 1,100 years, and throws all future Dravens into the center of its cross-hairs. Both Iishrem and Allirehem will eventually try to recruit all living Dravens to their cause for fighting the war, and they have both opened academies for training.

As two future Dravens living in the capital city of Iishrem, Imperium Aendor; Ethan and Katie Campbell experience the earliest events of the war first hand, and have an unshakable connection to their Eedon Rath-ni they have not yet met. With the help of a popular famous Eedon Rath-ni lore author, both Ethan and Katie are one day able to meet their Eedon Rath-ni, but from that day on they are each incontrovertibly fated to fight in the coming war. When a recruiter from Iishrem's Center for Draven Abilities forcibly recruits both Ethan and Katie, they each make a vow to their Eedon Rath-ni, that they will escape the House of Lance who rules Iishrem, and fight for Christian, if only he will have them. Little do they know, Christian has already been planning their rescue for the same night, all along. But what're his motivations for his own actions? What will Ethan and Katie find out about their heritage, their potential abilities, and roles to play as Dravens in the coming war?

As a lifelong runaway and mafia man, Brian Bringsly is looking for a way to escape and evade the coming war with his girlfriend of several months. He wants to get out of his life of fighting, he doesn't more of it. But he has a past that he can't escape and a future he can't evade forever. Of course his unnatural ability to turn into a tiger, makes him even more of a target to the war. When he is offered a spot at Christian's academy Brian listens; but has no desire to fight in a war. When the war comes for him later and he loses everything of value to him in a flash, what will he find to drive him forward; if only for his own survival? How will he use the skills of his past life, to secure his future? How will Brian meet his reclusive dragon Alyisay, and what will happen to his life when she first comes to him?

Living in a popular city-state in Middle Rehem mainly by herself has taught Bailey Triten much. Information and reserved aggression are two of her best attributes; but at an early age Bailey's father is suddenly pulled away from her and into the war of Christian's making. He is a Draven, and she will be too one day soon. When that day finally comes, it comes suddenly and violently. Bailey and her friends are attacked by a group of Iishrem soldiers and an Iishrem Draven sent there to kill them. She is able to save each of her friends with help from her father, but one is critically injured. If there is any chance for her friend Amanda to be saved, Bailey must leave her home and her friends at that very moment. Bailey accepts, desperate to save Amanda; but little does she realize that her father is never going to let her go home, or back to her friends. The only safe place for her now is Christian's Academy in Maravinya, but she must find her Eedon Rath-ni first and that's a problem; because Hector is missing. How will Bailey go about finding new friends and gathering new information, in an unfamiliar foreign landscape; and ultimately free her Eedon Rath-ni so she fan fly to safety and begin a new life at Christian's academy?

I found this book hard to get into and it has taken me so long to read as I kept putting it down and then picking it up which might be why I found it hard to enjoy. I didn't connect to the characters. Overall I'm sorry to say I just couldn't connect to this book and I couldn't say why exactly.

Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for granting me early access to "A Take of Shadow and Shroud".

I'm currently in the middle of a major move, and will definitely come back at a later time and write out a full review and rating.

Thank you so much!
