Description

Charlotte--a gifted but broken jazz singer--has found security and support under the roof of an overbearing French patroness of the arts, only to become trapped by her own dependence. There are no bars on the windows and no locks on the doors, but Charlotte is very much a prisoner in an opulent but unsympathetic world in which her self-worth is contingent on her voice. When the irresponsible and headstrong Theo re-enters her life after thirteen years, she is compelled, finally, to choose between complacency and autonomy.

The term tacet is a musical term which literally means to be silent. In Suzanne Chiasson's novel's title, Tacet evokes the idea that someone's silence does not mean that they can't be heard. The story begins baby introducing the reader to the main protagonists whose voices fill the pages. On one side of town, the reader is acquainted with Charlotte, a forty-something woman who is "waiting for herself." On the other side of town is twenty-something Theo, a rudderless young man who smokes and drinks too much and is recognized for beginning projects but not completing them. When Theo attends a posh party, he reconnects with Charlotte.

"Theo was aware of the cliché. He'd seen too many movies where time stood still but that that is exactly what it felt like. For just a second, he and Charlotte were locked together, whatever was going on around them didn't exist."

It turns out that Charlotte had been in a relationship with Theo's father and had acted as his surrogate mother for a time, and now when they meet again, their connection is deep. The character-driven story is filled with poetry-like prose much in the style of American authors of the 1920s. Indeed, Theo's narration is reminiscent of the unreliable author in The Great Gatsby. Like a fragrant glass of wine that needs to be sipped slowly, this novel needs to be savored. I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy crafted writing and deep introspection.
