He holds a master of divinity degree and a master of theology degree. Joseph entered the U S. Army as a private and served for 18 months in the infantry in Vietnam. He later became an army chaplain and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1994. His awards include three Bronze Star medals, one for Valor, and a Purple Heart. Joseph was married for fifty-three years until losing his wife in 2016. He has two daughters and three grandchildren, and shares his home with two dogs and two cats.
