Description

As part of a team-building exercise at work, Ellen Cumbess took a personality profile assessment that classified attendees as either lions, monkeys, turtles, or camels. Ellen was a lion. As this light bulb of realization begins to flicker, the author summons to mind the events that led to the creation of this lion personality. This was the beginning of Ellen's exploration into her own history which took her down the road she had always wanted to travel; the road she had been on her entire life, without a steering wheel. Tales of a Lion is the memoir of a native New Yorker struggling to overcome anger and resentment stemming from the events of her early childhood. It is the story of a lion's self-examination of a life spent roaring in search of inner peace; and in the end provides an answer to the question: Does a lion always have to roar?

Penned by a woman who obviously had many obstacles in her way yet took them and was able to build a beautiful life by plowing through each one. You'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll be moved! Definitely worth the read. Excellent!

Tales of a Lion was written directly from the gut and heart. Very moving, funny and sad - it is all in there. Ellen has the wonderful ability to bring the reader into her world, from the Bronx to Tampa to Alabama. The reader is turned into her companion where they find themselves taking this journey right with her, feeling the feelings, seeing the sights and living the narrative as if you were present during the events. A must read for those who think they cannot reach new heights because of the negatives they encounter. Ellen breaks that wall down and is an inspiration to others who can do the same, if they only let loose their inner lion.

An entirely enjoyable journey through the life of Ms Cumbess. A refreshing tale of truth, hardship, fun, laughter betrayal and success. Rarely have I enjoyed such a read that has me in fits of laughter one minute, and with tears shed the next.

For anyone who wonders if they are sometimes speaking a different language to those around them, I highly recommend this book - you may just find that you are!!!

I just finished read Tales of a Lion and it was excellent! If you are looking for a thought provoking book with timely topics, this is the one book you should read. Ellen takes us on a journey where she explores her painful childhood memories, how she deals with her feelings of anger, and how her emotions spark her to embark down a road less traveled. You will laugh, cry and roar with Ellen as she takes us inside her life growing up in the Bronx as a latchkey child in the 1960's to the twists and turns which bring her to the love of her life and family she has longed for. You are literally at the edge of your chair as the unexpected tales of Ellen's journey through life unfold. She speaks honestly and to all of us as she takes us inside her quest for empowerment. Not everyone would have emerged from suffering the disappointments, rejection, and heartbreak that Ellen endures. She does not allow her past to define her. Rather, she relies on her inner strength, wit and a sense of humor to pull her through the most challenging of times. I would highly recommend this book.
