Description

Southern Vapors chronicles the author's life from childhood through college, law school, marriage, children, careers, and finally, the landscape of divorce and single parenthood. There are glimpses of her early life as an heiress-in-waiting, big white house more Tara than Tara itself, travels on a grand scale and glamor at home. The author's careers make appearances-lawyer, retailer, administrative assistant, purveyor of vintage handbags, editor and writer. The descent from the dizzying heights of prosperity follows, culminating in seven days locked in a low income mental institution. The author figures in most of the hospital scenes as the quintessential outsider, the observer, even when her eye is turned inward. A savvy country boy shows her new found respect when he mistakenly assumes that she drove to the hospital by herself as a way to plan her escape in advance. He was wrong, but she watches him make decisions about her both ways, first as a dumb chick hard to square with his image of a lawyer and then as a savvy lady who figured out how to work the system. After her stay at the hospital, the author observes her mind as it ebbs and flows and skirts around depression, perhaps even madness. Southern Vapors describes her quest for recovery, from traditional therapy to Native American shamanism and everything in between. She explores her relationship with each parent, unearthing some long-held secrets and ultimately achieving reconciliation with her mother and a tentative peace with her father, who is no longer living. By the end of the book, the author has two years under her belt as a practicing attorney and has regained her emotional and mental footing. Her ascent back to health is clearly apparent and enormously inspiring.

Stayed up til 2.00 in the morning to finish the book! July 13, 2012 By elizabeth murrray kelly My family is from the South and I also lived in Atlanta during the same period as the author. Her presentation of a life there in the late 60's/ early 70's was amazing in detail, especially the social rites of passage for a young woman in a very different time. Like The Help, her story rang true in so many details, but her art in making them funny is a special gift. What I found especially riveting was her recall and abilty to reconcile her memories as a young child with the wisdom she acquired as an adult. Her story made me feel as if I too could surface from the most desperate of circumstances and shine forth in happiness and a sense of self worth through true grit, as she does exhibit. Her reconciliation with her family and her gift of looking at herself wisely is a special quality of this book, which has a triumphant ending that will make anyone's day a happier one.

Amazing strength.Amazing humor. Amazing Lady. July 24, 2012 By Cynthia tessler WOW! WOW! WOW!
WOW!
I quite honestly did not know what to expect when I bought this book. I was stunned. I was stunned by the strength and courage it took to not only survive her story, but to be able to put it in writing
in such a clear, insightful and humorous way. At times I laughed until I cried. Several chapters there were literally tears rolling down my face. The Author so poignantly shared her journey. Her story is an inspiration to keep your sense of humor as you walk your path. Please run, do not walk, to get this book!

Loved this book! July 17, 2012 By Indiana Format:Paperback I don't usually read memoirs, simply because of the cringe-factor of reading someone else's innermost thoughts. I read this one, however, and was blown away by the author's self-deprecating candor. Through dark humor and pure honesty Ms. Garson is the reader's Virgil on a journey through her own personal Inferno. She made me realize the pettiness of some of my own "problems" and that the human soul can endure absolutely anything, and come out smiling on the other side of it. It takes a whole bucket of guts to be this forthcoming!
