Description

It is 1815 and Napoleon has been defeated. Lieutenant Ralph Fairfax returns to England haunted by his war in Spain. His hopes for peace are shattered by the secret his father never confessed. Instead of marrying his neighbour Flavia Stanton, he is kidnapped, and wakes as a convict, bound for the prison colony of New South Wales. Here he must fight to survive, trapped between his conflicting identities of gentleman and convict.

Meanwhile Flavia, devastated by Ralph's desertion, tries to rebuild her life. But her generosity and growing awareness of injustice set her at odds with her family. A fateful decision plays out against the demands for political reform, which culminate in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

Written with a strong sense of social turmoil of the post-Napoleonic war era, this poignant love story follows the fates of two people swept up in the currents of their times. War and revolution have disrupted the old order. In both England and Australia, new voices demand their rights.

...a staggeringly ambitious project, backed up by conscientious research and many years of evidently diligent practice and craft. You've created a host of memorable characters and situations to float the project, and have succeeded in creating a functioning story-engine of formidable size and complexity, with each cog and piston moving in synchronicity with every other. Congratulations are due on achieving a real feat here.

I loved this book and couldnt put it down. Not only is it a great story but there was obviously a huge amount of research that went into it and it was really interesting to read about the early history of NSW and Sydney with The Rocks area etc and what the prisoners had to do, and in England with the Corn Laws and the factories in Manchester etc. I liked the story - had to keep reading yesterday and last night, anxiously waiting to find out whether she ends up marrying the right guy! A lot of these books can be all hearts and flowers, but I thought Desiree captured the rawness of what a lot of people's lives were like. Cant wait for the sequel! I think it would make a great movie too.

Historical Fiction at its best. May 2, 2012By Avid Reader A great read. By the end of the third chapter I was hooked and read the whole book in one day! Would make a fantastic TV mini series and I sincerely hope there will be a sequel. The author has crafted a credible and enthralling story that transcends continents, class barriers and family expectations. The clever blending of strong characterisation with history gives the reader a vivid picture of the social turmoil during the period and a real sense of personal difficulties faced. The main characters are forced to adapt to survive tragic circumstances and are left forever changed by their experiences. I think the author describes the novel perfectly, Two Shadows is a poignant love story following the fates of two people swept up in the currents of their times.
