In an era of bootlegged whiskey and muddled race relations, faith and medicine are failing the patients at the Waverly Hills tuberculosis sanatorium. Dr. Wolfgang Pike believes music could play a pivotal role in his patient’s care—but his boss’s disapproval, rising racial tensions, and the memory of his wife tear at him—until a retired concert pianist arrives at the sanatorium. Jarred by his new patient, Wolfgang begins composing music with the conviction his songs will soothe the tortured bodies and souls of Waverly Hills. Inspired by the doctor’s passion, patients begin revealing their own musical talents and an orchestra of the most extraordinary kind begins to emerge.
