Description

Asim Khan had a successful career in New York and London as an investment banker and hedge fund manager. He was blown out during the global financial crisis but rather than soldiering on in finance until things got better, Mr. Khan threw caution to the wind and resettled in Saint-Tropez. At the time, he did not speak French or know anyone in Saint-Tropez and had no plan other than to live by the teachings of a yogi he met in India who instructed him to follow his heart and intuition because, as he was told, we all truly know what we want to be. It is a matter of separating the signal within you from the noise.

Following this advice, Mr. Khan quickly fell in with the crowd of luminaries who regularly visit Saint-Tropez and call it their home for a good portion of the year. The list includes European aristocracy, Russian oligarchs, Arab Spring revolutionaries, artists and the lively gay community that is truly the soul of Saint-Tropez. From these associations emerged colorful, very far-from-everyday experiences which bore re-telling. Mr. Khan’s purpose was not only to expose the excesses of a famous playground for the wealthy and notorious by simply narrating his experiences as they happened. There was a deeper purpose. The economic times of the day call for a radical reinvention of self and career in order to maintain a decent standard of living, as many industries have been downsized and wages have not kept up with living costs. With the easy medicine of stories that entertain, inform and, expose in potentially embarrassing ways a world that is inaccessible to most, Mr. Khan provides the reader an effective roadmap for self-renewal and reinvention.

A nice reminder for me of that qoute from the movie, Ferris Buller's Day Off, "Life moves pretty fast; if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it". Dispatches from Saint - Tropez: Reminiscences of La Vie en Rose is an insperational book for all of us that feel trap in the doldrums of our day to day lives. Mr. Khan takes you on a wild ride as he escaped from his life in the financial world to living in Saint Tropez. He describes his "no holds barred" experiences as if he were a tour guide amongst the rich and famous that inhabit Saint Tropez. An excellant book for those that want to escape from their daily reality for a few hours. Can not wait to read his next book.

One of the most refreshing books I've read in a long time!

There's a line in there that says, "Saint Tropez is a passport FROM reality", and that is what the whole story is about. And even if you never go to Saint Tropez, you'll learn a lot about living... about living by jumping into the unknown.

Some quotes from the book:

"We must, Dear Reader, splash our personal canvasses with bold strokes and daring colors and give no thought to what the finished work may look like. It will somehow self-organize into a more worthy piece than can be constructed by the deliberate planning so common with the way life is lived today by most of our fellow humans. In that we must trust."

"After the vodka had been drained I ordered our umbrellas to be removed and got up on the table and danced wildly in the rain. The rest of my table joined me. Pretty soon, umbrellas were folding across the club and I motioned to DJ Kris to give it everything he had. We dance like savages in a proper rainstorm. (...) The manager of the VIP room at Gotha came over to me and handed me his card saying, 'Man, you're the best guy here. Come see us anytime and I'll comp you and your group. Just bring this same energy.' (...) The good times just kept rolling. The German film crew came over and asked for an interview, and the stars of the show invited us onto their yacht for an after-party."

One thing you'll take away from this book is:

There is nothing that people are craving more than a person who is authentic and genuine and who, by taking the lead and inspiring them, gives them permission to come out of their own shells.

In a way, this book is Eckhart Tolle on the next level. And even better yet, it also comes with a lot of insider tips on good restaurants and bars and clubs around Saint Tropez as well as an appendix of Saint Tropez style cooking recipes such as "Salt-Crusted Loup de Mer" (hint: it's a lot easier than it sounds).

I chanced upon a link to this book when researching on Saint-Tropez recently. Much like the patron saint of Saint-Tropez who had been cast away on a boat to perish before he touched any shores, the writer was set adrift by what he had once embraced for a career - the world of banking and high-octane finance. This writer has a story to tell! Even more fascinating is its delivery. His account of the big economic fallout that has since gripped the world, and how he came to be one of its first victims is a poignant, yet hilarious account unto itself. Any sight of his future obliterated by the never-ending and escalating devastation, he, upon the advice of a yogi, chooses to rely on his intuition to lead him through the fog. This is where his life sweetly careens off the beaten path to a world that once belonged only in glossy magazines. He shares his experiences here with scintillating humor, titillating accounts, and a deft usage of the language to draw you into the scene, pour you a glass of rosé, and keep you engrossed in his exploits without a dull moment. What caught my attention was his ability to draw upon his brilliant mind to engage the interest of the intellectually sophisticated, and then just as well abandon it to turn as vapid as the company called for. This is also a book to devour for an insider-account of this haunt of the rich and famous, with a lot of useful information on Saint-Tropez's restaurants, clubs, brunch "rituals" and recipes - all sprinkled throughout the book. Quick read, and hilarious.
