Description

Half Awakened Dreams continues the story of The Carandir Saga begun in Dragons Unremembered that is set in a multicultural world of gender equality.

Wounded, the evil dragon Baras escapes. King Ryckair and Queen Mirjel must seek him and together, as equals, complete a spell they began with the magical crown of Carandir. The monarchs have aged and their relationship is strained. Mirjel is unable to conceive an heir to the crown, raising unrest in the monarchy.

Yet, Ryckair’s former lover, Shara, has given birth to his son and heir in secret after he banished her for treason, not knowing that she carried his child.

Ryckair is abducted by magical creatures who blame him for the dragon’s escape. They send him into the world to find Baras, aided by two of the creatures who are transformed into human form. They delight in their new experiences and constantly bicker with each other.

Mirjel must rule the monarchy alone, yet she must find Ryckair so they can complete the spell together before Baras fully recovers.

Ryckair is captured by Shara in his wanderings. She reveals their son who vows to kill Ryckair. Shara stays her sons’ hand for she wishes to possess Ryckair again and force him to make her queen of Carandir in place of Mirjel.

When the queen leaves on a quest to rescue Ryckair, traitorous nobles who sided with Baras return from exile and seize their former holdings. They raise hatred against minorities as they revoke the rights of women and kill or expel all who are deemed impure.

Advance Praise

“This immersive tale combines palace intrigue, military coups, and sorcery—perfect for fantasy fans with a political bent. Great for fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings.”
Publishers Weekly

“Wimsett’s book presents an exciting plot of palace intrigue and political machinations spanning a continent. The novel is second in a planned series, picking up where the previous entry left off, and ending with movement toward the next act. The book features strong writing that helps illustrate the vastness of the fictional world and depth of the novel’s lore. The plotting of the political drama is carefully plotted with reveals that are timed satisfactorily...an immersive world that is clearly established as its own universe...the motivations of the characters are complex and variable. Readers will easily be hooked into the exciting blend of mobilized armies and political intrigue.”
