Description

On May 12, 2015, Amtrak 188 derailed outside of Philadelphia going 106 miles per hour. Eight passengers were killed and many more severely injured. Geralyn Ritter was thrown from the train with such force that she sustained catastrophic injuries to her chest, her abdomen, and her pelvis. Found unconscious, unable to breathe, and suffering massive blood loss, she was not expected to survive. After enduring weeks in the ICU, dozens of surgeries over the following years, unremitting pain, PTSD, depression, and opioid dependence, Geralyn was faced with a daunting question: beyond mere survival after trauma, where is the path back to joy? Bone by Bone shares her powerful story of resilience. With humor, grace, and no-holds-barred honesty, she describes the journey back to life and offers support and encouragement for others. Bone by Bone addresses the long-lasting impact of sudden trauma and extends hope—from the perspective of someone who has been there. And back.

A recognized expert in healthcare policy, Geralyn Ritter is executive vice president at Organon & Co., a new Fortune 500 healthcare company dedicated to the health of women. She was formerly senior vice-president at Merck & Co., Inc., one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. She has spearheaded global government affairs and policy, led initiatives on corporate governance and corporate responsibility, created and launched a widely acclaimed half-billion-dollar philanthropic initiative to end preventable maternal deaths around the globe, and served as President of the Merck Foundation. In 2020, on behalf of Merck, Geralyn accepted the Disability Employer of the Year award. She is now the author of a memoir about her recovery from the 2015 Amtrak derailment titles, Bone by Bone: A Memoir of Trauma and Healing.

Advance Praise

“After barely surviving a high-speed, head-on collision, I had the opportunity to read Bone by Bone. All I can say is that Geralyn gets it. So much of what I was feeling as I endured my painful recovery was right there, along with funny anecdotes that made me chuckle. I finished the book and knew I wasn’t alone—and I believe other survivors will feel the same way.” -- Nicole Schmidt, Polytrauma Survivor

“Having worked closely with Geralyn both before and after her traumatic accident, I can attest that there are few people whose light shines brighter or whose courage and resilience are stronger. If you are looking for an inspiring story of how an indomitable spirit can help one overcome life’s most painful struggles, this is the book for you.” -- Kenneth Frazier, CEO, Merck & CO., Inc. (2011-2021)

“It is rare for a patient to survive the injuries Geralyn suffered. But rarer still are her perceptive insights on trauma care and recovery. In an era where patient reported long term outcomes are increasingly important, Bone by Bone is a gem that I expect will not only help patients and their caregivers, but also health care professionals, by providing an intelligent, honest, yet still hopeful and at times even humorous take on the recovery experience from major trauma.” -- Patrick M. Reilly, Chief, Division of Traumatology, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery, Penn Medicine
