Description

Who will help the snakes save their home?

Rufus the farmyard dog is puzzled when dozens of snakes appear to be trying to tell him something. They contort their bodies into shapes that look vaguely familiar, but unable to read, Rufus does not realize that the snakes are forming words: Please help snakes in trouble. Rufus knows, however, that something is amiss, so he runs off to find the farmer who is busily covering up a deep hole. Once again, the snakes spell out a message: Save our home. The farmer realizes that by filling in the hole, he will be destroying the snakes’ winter home. He comes up with a perfect solution that will keep people and farm animals safely away from the hole while the snakes can come and go as they please.

In addition to being a charming picture book with humorous illustrations, What the Snakes Wrote serves as a gentle reminder to respect animals and their habitats. A section at the end of the book provides readers with interesting facts about snake behavior including where they live and what they eat.

For those who may be squeamish about snakes, the ones in the book are harmless garter snakes whose expressive faces will help convince readers that there is nothing to fear.
