Description

When a young man graduates from high school in Utah, he turns in the paperwork to serve a two year mission for the Mormon Church. When a young lady graduates, she finds herself a return missionary to marry. These are Utah Expectations.

Samuel and Daniel have always followed the Utah norm. Their devout mother, Grace, taught them early that nothing is more important than following God’s plan. Samuel is currently 18 months into his two year mission, while his younger brother is set to receive his call any day. The problem is both brothers feel something isn’t quite right at the core of their religion. Samuel’s intellectual curiosity, compounded by a ‘Dear John’ letter he receives from his high school girlfriend, compels him to cut short his mission and return home early. Daniel would like to forego the missionary experience, but Grace has convinced him that if he doesn’t serve, God will punish him. The brothers find the strength to question whether God really wants them to be Mormon, but the real test comes when they question the proverbial Utah lifestyle.

Utah Expectations is the story of two brothers living in a predominantly Mormon community, and their struggle to accept the possibility that everything they’ve been taught could be false. The story takes a compelling look at the hypocrisy surrounding religion and the people who fall victim to it.

A good read. A fast read December 11, 2012 By JasonThe book does a good job showing the Utah Mormon lifestyle. I can see why it would bother some people (especially Mormons). Honest religious stories usually do. The book doesn't bash Mormonism, it asks people to just question if it's what they really want. I thought it was clever and insightful.

Great writer! January 20, 2013 By Candace MauI really enjoyed the character development! It gives rare insight of living in a state where expectations are different...thoroughly enjoyed it!!!

BreathofFreshAir December 11, 2012 By FromUtahTooFrom the second I started reading this I was engaged both in the storyline and the characters' inner conflicts. Growing up in Utah with beliefs that differ from those of my community and even my own family was exhausting. It was refreshing to read about struggles and events in a novel that I could really relate to for the first time. I really appreciate the fact that there is finally another perspective put out there about growing up in such as religious community. Though the author does relate some negative feelings regarding the religion and some of the people in it. I felt there was a certain indifference from this author as far has whether he liked/disliked the actual religion... I don't feel as though he was pushing an anti-morman agenda. I felt the underlying message was geared toward the dangers that lie in all religions. It's as though the author wanted to promote thinking for one's self and highlight some of the consequences of not questioning things that we're told (especially things that don't "sit right" on a personal level), but just mindlessly "following the heard." It was a good read and I felt it was well written. Kudos!
