He was assassinated to stop him from revealing information that could destroy the sinister plans of a powerful and politically well-connected American oil tycoon. Soon after the activist’s death, the people who killed him discover that Caroline also holds information, albeit unwittingly, that could expose them.

Caroline barely has time to grieve her husband’s death when she receives a frantic phone call from Kristie Bremmer, a young activist who knew her husband and was with him in Kuala Lumpur. Having spoken with François shortly before his death, Bremmer tells Caroline that she believes her husband’s death, and the deaths of three of her closest friends, was part of a conspiracy—a carefully crafted plan with links to a threat her husband made to expose a plot by industrialists and corrupt politicians to scuttle an international effort to establish stringent environmental pollution policies aimed at limiting fossil fuel usage to stop global warming.
