Description

What if you were the only one of your kind?

Being black, teenaged, and gay makes high school junior Neill Mallory an outlier, the kind of data point scientists struggle to explain away. He was strong enough to come out in eighth grade, tough enough to endure his recent breakup with his boyfriend Carl, and sensitive enough to know just how much his being gay hurts the older brother he worships. He is intelligent enough to fulfill his family’s dream that he become a doctor - a dream he doesn’t share. But after disappointing his family once, he can’t imagine doing so again.

What if you found another?

Sheila Galliano is one of only eight percent of white students in her new school, a former poor little rich girl, now just poor, and facing an unknown future with a mother she barely knows after her father’s suicide. But she does knows Neill, recognizing him as the brother her mother’s former lover. She is appalled to find her mother ignoring the fact that Neill is gay and taking every opportunity to throw Sheila and Neill together while she continues her pursuit of his older, married brother. Although even hanging with Neill is better than being around Julian the Latino lover who follows her through the school halls.

Invisible ties bind Neill and Sheila together, ropes that tighten when Neill's brother is arrested for the murder of Sheila's mother. These two outliers have to work together to keep the real killer from going unpunished and make futures of their own while they uncover the real truth about the past they share.
