Description

Breathing Is How Some People Stay Alive blurs the lines between horror, catastrophic speculative fiction, and psychological realism in a collection that might best be described as weird fiction. These connected stories offer dark reconstructions of lives brimming with desperate loneliness. They allow us to bear witness to the life-altering love of sisters, brothers, mothers… the life-altering love that buoys them as they struggle to stay afloat in the wake of childhoods they merely survived.

A Note From the Publisher

The collection, as a whole, addresses the violence of existing as a woman in the world, whether it is the apathy of husbands and parents, or the deeply penetrative pain of existing as a sexual being before we even know how to exist in the world as we are.

Advance Praise

"“Immersive and surprising, Alison Gadsby’s fiction is extraordinary in its sudden, absorbing strangeness; its tender, minute familiarity. These stories are a sometimes jarring, always hypnotic, staccato phase out of the world we know and simultaneously—through Gadsby’s deep rootedness to our reckless and remarkable humanity—a tether to it. Unforgettable.” – Hollay Ghadery, author of Widow Fantasies

“With razor sharp sentences and a deeply compassionate heart, Alison Gadsby's stories unfold to reveal beautiful and startling truths that stay with the reader long after the reading is done. I've worked with Alison before, and I know this collection is going to explode minds and melt hearts.” – Carleigh Baker, author of Last Woman and Bad Endings.

"Alison Gadsby is a force for good! As well as a dynamic and inspiring champion for all things literary in Toronto, she’s a searingly sharp author in her own right. I can’t wait to read her new collection and be shaken and thrilled by her work once again."—Damian Tarnopolsky, author of Every Night I Dream I’m a Monk, Every Night I Dream I’m a Monster

"I have been enthralled with Alison Gadsby's work ever since I first read it. There is a vibrancy and originality to her voice that makes me ecstatic to follow her wherever she wants to take me. I have been desperately anticipating this collection and cannot wait to see Gadsby's full vision unleashed."– Alicia Elliott, author of And Then She Fell

"Alison Gadsby has a flair for writing authentic, gritty and compelling stories. I can't wait to read her new book."–Farzana Doctor, author of Seven

Marketing Plan

- Pitching to local media in Etobicoke, Toronto, and St. Catharines, as well as some larger Canadian media. Pitching to any publications that are interested in works of speculative fiction, horror, psychological realism, or ""weird"" fiction, and women focused/feminist magazines. The author is confirmed to be taking part in the Angel Reading Series on June 5th, 2026, and will also be organizing other readings and events in the coming months. There will be a local launch in Toronto, (potential locations include TYPE Books, Another Story Bookshop, or The Novel Spot), and the author will join the Guernica Toronto launch.

The author is the founder and host of Junction Reads, so the book will be featured there. We'll be promoting it on all Guernica's social media accounts as usual.

Pitching to festivals in the GTA and Toronto.
