And THE VANISHING THRONE by Elizabeth May is indeed packed with thrilling surprises and suspense that gave me anxiety. The revelations alone had my mind reeling! These fae, there's nothing simple about them, their lives might be long, but I think they're more volatile and human than us! The Falconer 2 picked up shortly where the first book left us. Aileana Kameron, the last Falconer, is held prisoner by Lonnarch and suffered such grave torture at the hands of the evil fae. Meanwhile, it's been three years since Aileana has gone missing and Edinburgh is unrecognizable as the Wild Hunt has been unleashed and death and devastation is everywhere.
THE VANISHING THRONE suffered from no sophomore or sequel syndrome. The plot developed in the most epic way possible and Alieana is forced to endure and fight in an endless cycle of confrontations, near misses, mishaps, and small victories. I'm emotionally invested in the plot in the first tenth of the novel, while EMay didn't draw Aileana's PTSD in an angsty way, it is haunting and you can tell that it starts to chip away at her confidence and trust towards the people around her.
The Falconer Trilogy is hands down one of the best fae fantasy I've read period. Alieana's epic adventure and quest to save the world will stay with you long before you've read the last word. With its cleverly written plot and startling revelations, the books are filled with tension combined with a lot of surprising twists that continuously tip the scales between the good and the bad guys while blurring those same lines. The Falconer and THE VANISHING THRONE will keep you in excited and often times, anxious, anticipation of what's to happen next. All of the characters from the main ones down to the supporting cast are vividly written and portrayed that they all leave a lasting impression. It's hard to forget anyone at this point and let's not forget that jaw dropping ending. It's not exactly a cliffhanger like the first one, but it's a game changer for sure.
I can't wait for the ending, from the looks of it, it's going to be one helluva fight.
