Description
Tomorrow, six-year-old Patrice will meet an unexpected death, and a non-human Crossing Guard will escort her to the afterlife. Or that’s the plan until her father, Keyvon, finds out.
An architect who trusts that all humanity is interconnected, he’s determined to save her. His faith gets pummeled when no one will help. Then he meets Charlene, a heart transplant recipient eager to pay kindness forward.
But her anti-rejection drugs muddle her brain, and she helps the wrong mission, jeopardizing her own survival. In one short day, the flawed connections between these humans may save—or kill—them all.
A Note From the Publisher
Thank you for reading Adventures of a Maybe Human. I hope the twists and turns surprised and delighted you.
My curiosity about heart transplants began years ago, when a family friend visited while in town for her transplant checkup. We spent hours talking about how hearts can break and heal in unexpected ways. Little did I imagine after researching this story that my fit, athletic husband would suddenly face a life-threatening heart crisis.
He spent a month in the hospital, near death, and we began the application for a transplant, giving me more research material than I ever expected. (Thankfully, my husband recovered and didn’t ultimately need the transplant.)
Bravery and generosity form the basis of any organ donation. It’s an extraordinary act: two lives—often strangers—becoming intertwined. This reminded me of Keyvon’s belief in ubuntu—that all of humanity is bound together. When we lift one, we lift all. When we harm one, we harm all. I have no proof that’s true, but I hope it is. I hope our world is one of deep unity, with our divisions being merely superficial.
When I write, I challenge myself to create stories that join us through our wild imaginations and our willingness to explore. If this book entertained you and made you feel a little more connected, then its purpose was fulfilled.
Word-of-mouth is essential for any author’s success. I’d be so grateful if you shared a review online and tell your friends, or if you suggest it to your book club. Leaving an honest review—even just a line or two—would mean the world to me. (Let’s keep the spoilers our secret!)
I am always happy to attend clubs or events when possible.
Thank you for being a part of this adventure.
