Description

The highly anticipated forthcoming debut novel from Millennial author McKenzie Ruth, The Tried and True Tales of Phineas Ichabod Rate [High Top Publishing, March 2016] begins simply enough: an adolescent boy named Christopher and his dog, Flyer, get hit by a car – which is only the latest unfortunate event in their young lives.

Long ago abandoned by his drug-addled, narcissistic parents, Christopher falls into a coma following the crash – and begins a mythical, psychedelic journey to save Flyer’s life through an alternate universe America. Here, the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma have merged into NEW AZ, and a monstrous lethal electric fence has been erected to keep out “undesirables.” Fear-mongering Red State characters like Annie OK Corral, Rush Limpaugh, and Glen Bent run amok.

As Christopher embarks upon the search to find and save Flyer, The Tried and True Tales of Phineas Ichabod Rate takes readers through dystopian territories like Bedlam and Wilderness X – and ultimately introduces them to the novel’s unforgettable trickster title character: a shabbily attired, five-foot-seven anthropomorphized dog/coyote/human creation of Christopher’s favorite illustrator, Ruthie Ruth.

“Except for the parts that are a phantasmagoric mash-up of urban fantasy, graphic novels, hip fairytales and futuristic extravaganza, The Tried and True Tales of Phineas Ichabod Rate is totally realistic,” states Ruth. “It’s decidedly more wild and freewheelin’ than your standard issue book, but at the core it’s a coming of age story about the power of forgiveness, the necessity of truth, and the emotional courage it takes to move on, evolve, and grow.”

With early industry reviewers praising the “Ozlike invention and emotionally profound allegories of abandonment” (Kirkus) contained in Ruth’s debut, The Tried and True Tales of Phineas Ichabod Rate is sure to find a cult following upon its release in March 2016.
