Description
From Congressman Jared Huffman, a behind-the-scenes look at the shocking extent of Christian nationalism’s reach in our government—and the fight to defend church-state separation.
Sinclair Lewis is said to have predicted, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.” Democratic congressman Jared Huffman witnessed something eerily like that vision on January 6, 2021. That was his wake-up call to the shocking power of Christian nationalism.
No Prophets argues that Christian nationalism is now America’s most dangerous political movement. Huffman uncovers the landscape of this movement—who they are, what they want, and how they plan to get it—and reveals how it has destabilized our nation more than most recognize. Blending deep research with untold stories from inside our government, he examines how this violent confederation of religious extremists is undermining science, education, foreign policy, and the very architecture of our democracy. But, Huffman argues, it’s not too late.
Provocative and clear-eyed, No Prophets exposes an existential threat to our democracy and compels us to reclaim the values core to our secular republic.
About the Author: Jared Huffman is a US congressman representing California’s 2nd District and the only elected official in either house of Congress to admit that he does not believe in God. He founded the Congressional Freethought Caucus, which he cochairs with Congressman Jamie Raskin, to promote sound public policy based on reason, science, and moral values. He lives in San Rafael, California.
Advance Praise
"As someone who cherishes both my faith and our constitutional republic, I found this book both sobering and inspiring. Huffman shows how Christian nationalism betrays the very principles it claims to defend, and he does so with clarity, compassion, and unflinching honesty." -Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives
"No Prophets is a compelling call to govern the United States with reason rather than authoritarianism. The time is now. Solid separation of church and state is the only way to preserve religious freedom—and to protect our democracy. Please read on." -Bill Nye the Science Guy
"As a conservative Christian who has fought extremism from inside the Republican Party, I recommend this book to Americans of every political and religious background who want to understand what we’re up against—and why we must stand together to save the country we love." -Adam Kinzinger, United States Air Force officer and former United States Representative
"Drawing on his experience as the first self-identified Humanist in Congress, Huffman lucidly explains how the old religious right has morphed into America’s most dangerous political movement. This fantastic book introduces a cast of reactionaries who have mounted an assault on America’s constitutional democracy—and holds to account the leaders who, in refusing to acknowledge the threat to democracy for what it is, have enabled its rise, which has brought us to the brink of fascism." -Katherine Stewart, New York Times bestselling author of Money, Lies, and God
"Let me offer a prayer of thanks for Jared Huffman's crucial dissection of Christian nationalism, a heresy that threatens both our democracy and (though this is not a concern to all) the gospel message. May his powerful words serve as a rallying cry for the work that must be done to safeguard the future." -Bill McKibben, author of Here Comes the Sun and founder of 350.org
