Description

Award-winning author Laurel Corona is back after a decade-long hiatus with a sweeping historical fiction, “Aloha Wanderwell Takes the Wheel” (May 22, 2026, Sibylline Press). An absorbing exploration of "the first woman to drive around the world," the novel follows the true adventures of Aloha Wanderwell, who (at just 16 years old, in 1922) drove 500,000 miles across 80 countries in a Ford 1918 Model T. This is an epic tale of adventure, romance, and a woman coming into her own–and the murder that brought it to a catastrophic end.

Sixteen-year-old Idris Hall ran away from her boarding school in 1922, changed her name, and joined the daring around-the-world expedition of charismatic Walter “Cap” Wanderwell, beginning a five-year adventure that would take her across five continents behind the wheel of a Model T, in an era where roads were often no more than grooves in the dirt, and few if any people had seen a car or a European face.

Who was Aloha Wanderwell? How did she find the determination and courage to survive threats like stampeding elephants in Africa, a blizzard obliterating the road in Ukraine, and armed militants in China? Who was Walter Wanderwell? Rogue, philanderer, con man, and perhaps a German spy—he was all of this, as well as the love of Aloha’s life. Through the grit of their travel and the giddy heights of their international fame, Aloha grows from a starstruck teen to a woman confident of everything except the man who cannot love her the way she needs.

Advance Praise

This novel has it all—wit, humor, romance, adventure, exotic locations, intrigue, and even a murder. Based on the extraordinary life of a woman whose true story has long begged to be told, this is historical fiction at its most entertaining. In Laurel Corona’s capable hands, Aloha Wanderwell becomes unforgettable.”

—Susan Meissner, USA Today bestselling author of “A Map to Paradise”

“Corona offers an engaging novel inspired by one of the most extraordinary real-life adventurers of the twentieth century. Her story brings colour and momentum to Aloha Wanderwell’s global journeys, capturing the scale of a life defined by exploration, ingenuity, and an unrepeatable series of achievements.”

Christian Fink-Jensen, author “Aloha Wanderwell:The Border- Smashing, Record-Setting Life of the World’s Youngest Explorer”

“Laurel Corona has given us an extraordinary gift in “Aloha Wanderwell Takes the Wheel”, the story of a young woman who drove 400,000 miles across every continent, becoming an icon of 1920s female independence. This is both a breathtaking adventure and a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit of a girl who refused to let anyone else steer her life. I honestly couldn’t put it down.”

—Michelle Moran, bestselling author of “Cleopatra’s Daughter, and Maria:A Novel of Maria von Trapp”

“With a name like Aloha Wanderwell, it is hardly surprising that travel loomed large in her life. Author Laurel Corona portrays the wander woman as a feminist icon who roamed the world in a Model T in an era when ladies’ apron strings tethered them to home and hearth. “Aloha Wanderwell Takes the Wheel” allows readers to become armchair travelers whose guide is as colorful as her exotic name.”

—Marlene Wagman-Geller, author of “Women of Means: The Fascinating Biographies of Royals, Heiresses, Eccentrics, and Other Poor Little Rich Girls”
