Description
It can be hard to forgive. Even harder to forgive ourselves. If Connor is to forgive himself, he’ll need to look right into the mirror. There he will see himself, his past and the generations of a family tree that have shaped his life.
Poetic, pulsating and haunting, Connor Allen’s second autobiographical play is propelled forward with an epic soundtrack. The Forgiveness of a Monster is a deeply personal and profoundly universal look at what makes us tick as human beings and the flaws that define us.
Advance Praise
"an emotionally anguished play featuring a mixed-heritage protagonist (played by Allen) who has been abandoned by his Jamaican father and raised by his Welsh mother. His inability to forgive his father takes him back to Jamaica where he experiences a psychic watershed. This twister of a drama shifts ambitiously in form and tone, sliding between gothic thriller, family psychodrama and standup-style direct address at one point when Allen interacts with the audience with tipples of gin in warmly comic tones. It is highly original in its treatment of material with some fantastic rap, spoken word, song and music, all of which reach the gut..." -The Guardian
"Mixing rap and song with spoken word, Forgiveness of a Monster is a deep dive into generational trauma, identity, belonging and masculinity to name just some of its focus points." - British Theatre Guide
"Forgiveness of a Monster is a rare theatrical sequel. Plays don’t often get ‘part twos’. I guess this is because, unlike film, theatre audiences are less likely to be familiar with the original instalments, and even more unlikely to find a way to catch up on them. The show unfolds like a concept album. There aren’t scenes as much as there are tracks with interludes. Each musical sequence is book-ended by either a conversation between Connor and his therapist (calling to mind Dave’s Psychodrama) or fantastical sequences set within his subconscious, featuring mystical battles.
But the character’s healing is an ongoing process with no fix-all solution waiting at its end. This is, by its nature, an endless process which starts with being able to look in the mirror and truly take in what he sees. " - playstosee
