Description
A mysterious intruder, an ancient prophecy, and a global countdown toward salvation—or absolute nuclear annihilation.
A mysterious and hypnotic figure appears at a church in Ukraine at the height of the Cold War. Peasant worshippers believe he might be the reincarnation of Taras Shevchenko, their national poet. State Security—because he has somehow also just breached a buried Soviet nuclear bunker—is certain he's an American agent.
After the same unthinkable threat strikes the U.S. Central Command, the CIA warns the White House of a "sleeper Soviet mole." In the dark shadow of the Kremlin's red walls, a ruthless KGB chief who has renamed himself to match Lenin and Stalin plots to rule a resurrected USSR.
As global big banking and religious institutions rush to co-opt this enigmatic intruder, the dominated Ukrainian people pray he will lead them to freedom. Meanwhile, at the deepest hidden level of Washington’s spy world, a powerful figure believes the biblical Book of Revelation is the code behind everything.
At a final pivot point for humanity, the unravelling of these ancient prophecies could produce salvation through a countdown cure for cancer—or trigger a nanosecond nuclear war to bring about “the idealized, Purified America of Thomas Jefferson”—live worldwide on top-rated satellite TV.
A Note From the Publisher
My dear Readers: I started this prophetic fiction when Mikhail Gorbachev was not in power; the Berlin Wall still stood; the Cold War seemed to have no end; and the scourge called AIDS was doubly terrifying, with extreme prejudice directed to its victims, and no cure. Ronald Reagan saw a new dawning for America, but a large chunk of New York real estate was a burning ruin. In Ukraine, the Soviet KGB were conducting a pogrom against dissidents and intellectuals trying to speak out against domination from the Kremlin. My previous thrillers had been well received: my writer's life was flourishing. Then, personal circumstances changed abruptly. I set this manuscript aside.
That was half my lifetime ago.
These forty five years later find the democratic world, and Ukraine, only just emerged from the black bat apocalypse called Covid, and still facing the Kremlin opponent whose coming — and even his name — my yellowed manuscript predicted. And America is still trying to solve the impossible problem posed by the ideals of its founding Constitution: Equality for all, versus Absolute Monarchy.
Meanwhile, the Nuclear Sword of Damocles above us all rests on an even more slender trigger: the Doomsday Clock of the Atomic Scientists has just been reset at 84 seconds to midnight: an Artificially Intelligent world that finds us--and America's dream of itself--somewhere between Dr. Strangelove and Paradise Lost.
This book, with its foreboding Prophecies of the Angels, sets out the signposts on the route to 9/11-- and beyond it, humanity's all too current choice between Armageddon or Redemption.
We are indeed in The Time of the Seventh Angel.

A Special Note to Reviewers from the Author
Dear vital Reviewers and Book Trade Professionals,
At the age of 90, I am extraordinarily grateful to be able to offer The Time of the Seventh Angel, my ninth and final publication to you, for consideration in a publishing world of books competing with screens, and vanishing newspaper reviews: a playing field that has changed so dramatically and so swiftly for writers and their invaluable readers.
In my early career I was astonished to have my first novel shortlisted for the CWA British Silver Dagger, and then for others the Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award, and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. This, my last book must be my "swansong" in fiction.
By bringing this final work directly to NetGalley, I am choosing the agility of the modern digital landscape to bypass traditional publishing delays and share this story with you, and other possible readers, immediately.
Thank you for your time, your continuing dedication to the written word, and for reading this last milestone in my literary journey. Your honest reviews and feedback mean the world to me, and to readers.
Warm regards,
David Gurr
