Description

Kaylie arrives on the Gulf coast seeking a clean slate after being financially and emotionally drained by a predatory ex-boyfriend in San Diego. Accompanied by her dog, Wren, and armed with a modest inheritance from her grandmother, she plans to use her architectural background to flip historic homes, hoping to reclaim her independence and professional pride. She settles into a routine of waitressing and bartending at a local steakhouse while scouting properties, eventually setting her sights on a derelict historic mansion scheduled for a tax auction.

While bartending, Kaylie’s path crosses with two men who will shape her future: Quinton Hines, an elderly, retired builder who becomes her mentor, and Tom, a former high-powered New Orleans lawyer whom she initially dubs "Mr. Grumpy Pants." Tom is living as a local pariah, having left his legal career under a cloud of scandal involving rumors of an unethical affair with a client. Despite his aloofness and self-imposed isolation, Kaylie is drawn to his intelligence and hidden kindness. Their burgeoning connection is complicated by the presence of Ken Summers, an arrogant and predatory realtor who represents the toxic masculinity Kaylie is desperate to escape. Ken aggressively pursues Kaylie while simultaneously fueling the rumors that ruined Tom’s reputation.

Kaylie and Quinton form an informal partnership, with the veteran builder teaching her the nuances of coastal construction. As she prepares for the auction, her relationship with Tom deepens, though it is frequently stalled by his deep-seated shame and fear that his "black sheep" status will tarnish her. This tension is exacerbated by Jeannie, the woman at the center of Tom’s past scandal, who continues to manipulate social situations to keep Tom isolated.
