NAPA, California – In his forthcoming book Forging Eden (Books Fluent, Oct. 27, 2026), Dr. Jan R. Krupp recounts the remarkable true story of his unlikely path from physician to trailblazing vintner – a journey that began with hundreds of acres of unforgiving land others had deemed worthless.

At the height of Napa Valley's golden age, when prime Cabernet land was scarce, seasoned vintners toured a 750-acre property and encountered endless rock, immovable boulders, thin volcanic soil and no water. A bad bet. They all walked away.

Jan, a 50-year-old physician with three kids, no capital and little experience in viticulture, went all in. Standing on that unforgiving mountainside, he envisioned what no one else could: rows of vines yielding some of the region’s best fruit.

Against all odds, Jan and his brother Bart transformed that harsh terrain into the iconic Stagecoach Vineyard, one of Napa Valley’s largest and most celebrated growers. Renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, Stagecoach supplied fruit to Caymus, Spottswoode, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Duckhorn, Hall, Pahlmeyer and dozens of others. It would also give rise to Jan and Bart’s own boutique winery, Krupp Brothers.  

Forging Eden is the story of a gamble that paid off. A man who abandoned the certainty of medicine to chase what only he could see. On a mountainside everyone else forsook, he found the life he was meant to live.

Dr. Jan R. A graduate of Yale University and Stanford University School of Medicine, Jan practiced internal medicine for more than two decades before pursuing an audacious dream: to grow world-class Cabernet Sauvignon on land that experts deemed impossible to cultivate.

Armed with scientific precision, unyielding perseverance, and a deep belief in the potential of the land, Jan and his team spent years blasting rock, finding water, and nurturing vines in the thin mountain soil. Stagecoach Vineyard, would go on to supply fruit to many of Napa’s most esteemed wineries.

Jan later cofounded Krupp Brothers Winery with Bart, crafting wines that reflect the beauty, complexity, and grit of the vineyard they developed. His journey from healing people to cultivating vines and crafting wine reveals what happens when science, art, and sheer willpower converge.
