He joins a group of privateers and sets sail overseas, but all is not well. Along the English coast, a group of marauders attack their ship, and lay waste to almost everyone on board.

Melanie Calstock, a widowed undertaker’s daughter with OCD, is prone to late nights due to her ever-present grief and racing mind. She overhears the commotion from the shore, and rushes down to investigate; upon finding Sylas’s unconscious, bleeding body, she notes the similarities between Sylas and her late husband’s wounds, and her loss resurfaces with a breathless intensity.

When Sylas awakens, he is intrigued by the peculiar woman at his side, but bemused by how even with his lighthearted quips, she remains cold and guarded. To him, her dismissive nature and her father’s overprotectiveness prove what he feared all along: the war has left him inhuman, monstrous, and unworthy of finding love.

Melanie, meanwhile, feels guilt for enjoying Sylas’s colorful sense of humor and impish mannerisms, and tries to withhold her affections. She does not wish to find love again – not when she already had a pure, beautiful romance. But when Sylas prepares to return home, Melanie must face the question she fears most: is it better to have loved and lost twice, or to take a chance on the one man who pumped her heart back to life?
