It seemed like a simple civil case. Then they found the body.

Seattle Attorney Daniel Raine is hired by one Ryan Halligan to recover an antique compass reclaimed from the wreck of a ship captained by Halligan’s great-grandfather.

Raine’s first move is to sue the museum that plans to feature the compass in an upcoming exhibition.

It looks like a routine ownership dispute—until Halligan's own cousin joins the fight on the other side, convinced the compass is cursed because it was wrongfully taken from the sea.

Raine dismisses the curse as the ramblings of a superstitious opponent, but he begins to wonder if there may be some truth to the legend when the cousin turns up dead and the compass goes missing.

Then Halligan is arrested for the murder and the case against him seems airtight. But Raine doesn't buy it. With investigator Rebecca Sommers and fellow attorney Sawyer Mount, he races to find the real killer.

And the deeper he digs, the clearer it becomes—someone wants to bury his client, and they're not finished yet.

Chain of Custody – the ninth book in the bestselling legal thriller series featuring attorney Daniel Raine.
