Description

Sex, lies, conflicts of interest, international intrigue, and a double-cross of thousands of union employees in the heart of America. Add to that three major company's futures on the line and an assassination by anarchist terrorists in Paris of one of the company's chairman, in front of his screaming daughter, that almost killed a deal to save at least two of the companies. Hollywood? No. This was real. The Last American CEO is the ultimate insider's view of one of the biggest global business deals in history: Chrysler's 1987 purchase of American Motors Corporation (AMC) from French automaker Renault. Relevant today? Yes. The jewel of the acquisition was Chrysler acquiring the Jeep brand, which almost single-handily saved Chrysler from near-bankruptcy in the early 1990s and certainly allowed Chrysler to survive a real bankruptcy in 2009. Joe Cappy was the last CEO of AMC and Jason Vines became his young PR guy and went on to become the PR chief for Nissan, Ford, and Chrysler, all during times of turmoil.

A Note From the Publisher

Jason Vines has appeared for comment three times on Hardball with Chris Matthews, as well as with Gretchen Carlson on Fox News, Lesley Stahl on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Carol Costello on CNN, and hundreds of television and radio news programs over his career. His profile interview on the back page of Car & Driver magazine last January is considered a must-read.

Jason Vines served as the top communications professional for three automakers between 1998 and 2007. He was named “Top PR Professional” in the auto industry in 1999, 2005 and 2006 by Automotive News, the industry’s lead trade publication. He is
credited with leading some of the most memorable product launches in the industry including the Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Viper and reborn Nissan 350Z. Vines also was the communications chief during some of the biggest crises in automotive history, including claims of sudden unintended acceleration in Jeeps, Nissan Motor Corp. on the brink of bankruptcy and, the granddaddy of all
business crises, the Ford/Firestone tire crisis in 2000 and 2001.

Joseph E. Cappy, 82, was the last President and CEO of American Motors Corporation (AMC) before the company was acquired by Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Before he joined AMC, he was a rising star at Ford Motor Company. Under Cappy’s leadership, AMC changed the entire automotive landscape with the introduction of the two-door and four-door 1984 Jeep Cherokee, a compact SUV that took the market by storm. He also oversaw the development/launch of what most consider the quintessential Jeep, the Wrangler, a descendent of a World War II military Jeep.

Advance Praise

The Last American CEO has got it all: global political forces, a terrorist assassination, executive trysts, corporate espionage tactics, French/American cultural clashes, all while trying to keep afloat a struggling automotive business and its iconic Jeep brand. This is not your typical bland how-to business book. -- R. Steve Miller Renowned corporate turnaround expert for Chrysler Corporation, Delphi, AIG and now Hawker Beechcraft. Author of The Turnaround Kid

The Last American CEO is a Barbarians at the Gate for anyone who wants to peek at the seamy side of the auto business, and only Jason Vines would have dared to describe it in this much detail. The backstabbing and bad behavior he describes at the highest levels of Renault, Chrysler, and AMC is wilder and more carefully detailed than the stuff that got out at the time, and that was a lot. My career as an automotive journalist at Car and Driver and Automobile Magazine spanned virtually the entire time when all of that was going on. This book is more than just gossip; it is an instructive tale of one honorable man, Joe Cappy, a true nice guy, and the sad story of how American Motors became a hapless pawn in the hands of Renault and then Chrysler. I couldn't put it down. -- Jean Jennings Editor of the automotive blog JeanKnowsCars.com and former president and editor of Automobile magazine

Jason Vines, an automobile industry insider if there ever was such, tells the story of American Motors executive Joe Cappy and his complicated relationships with Ford, Chrysler, and Renault. The tale involves corporate deceit, trickery, and back-biting -- with a generous helping of international intrigue, infidelity, and murder added. If you thought the auto industry was just a bunch of talented engineers making cars, Vines will teach you how the car business really works. -- William Jeanes Former editor-in-chief and publisher of Car & Driver magazine
