Fifteen year old high school sophomore Alexia Wick is an ordinary girl, with extraordinary abilities. Like the other students at the prestigious South Haven Academy for the Gifted and Talented located in South Haven, Michigan, Alexia attends the annual homecoming football game, plays truth or dare with her friends, and frets about the pressures to succeed in school. Unlike some of her peers, however, Alexia is harboring a big secret: she is a white magic practicing Alerium witch. She must take great care to preserve her secret, all while navigating the tumultuous and often difficult pressrues of high school.
Alexia is also preparing for a big test. The test, however, is not the SAT; it is an annual competition where the best teen witches from across the country compete against each other by casting powerful spells in the Trials arena. The winner from the competition receives recognition and respect from their respective coven, and gets to advance to learn higher level magic. Alexia trains for the annual high-stakes competition with her mentor, Darren Smalls, by focusing on her craft, and pushing her magic and spell casting abilities to their absolute limit. When the handsome and confident Kaleb moves into town, he provides a welcome distraction from the upcoming Trials, but a dark secret could soon tear them apart.
When Alexia is confronted with the ultimate game of chance, and is torn between her first real love and the allegiance that binds her to her coven, will she buckle under the weight of the pressure ... or will she rise to the challenge?
