A refreshing mystery full of style and pizazz! Goldie Vance is a great character and the comic was a joy to read. I can't wait to see more of her adventures!

this was such a delight to read & I cannot wait to pick up the next volume

Goldie's enthusiasm & passion for solving mysteries is what really hooked me & kept me reading till the last page - I love how the series opens with her delivering a lost child back to their parents because I think this short scene was both a great introduction to her character & a sign of things to come (lots of mysteries, hopefully)

the illustrations in this volume are really great as well - I love the colours especially & how they really bring the story alive on the page while also crafting the backdrop on which everything takes place (a Florida resort in the 1960s)

overall this is a great start to a new series & I encourage you to read it if you enjoy mysteries or want another fun & entertaining comic to read

thanks again to BOOM! Box & NetGalley for providing a copy of this book for me to read & review

'Goldie Vance Vol. 1' by Hope Larson with illustrations by Brittney Williams is a new detective series with a smart, thrill-seeking young detective at it's heart. It's also got a nostalgic feel all over it with the wonderful art.

Marigold "Goldie" Vance lives in the Crossed Palms Resort in Florida. Her mom lives nearby and works as a mermaid in a water show. She runs odd jobs around the hotel, and acts as an amateur detective. When we meet her, she has found a missing young boy and returned him to his parents. Things are about to get a bit darker though with the arrival of a stranger with a German accent who has lost a necklace. Goldie is on the case going against the wishes of her father and the hotel's owner. Can she crack the case?

I loved the flavor of this book. There are so many great things about it, like the setting and the characters. There are little touches, like the young woman with the crush on Alan Shepard, Goldie's "can do" attitude, and how she knows and treats the people around her. The art is a visual treat that fit the story perfectly. The colors have a soft, almost pastel color that fits the Florida sun and palms. I had a great time reading this one.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Boom! Studios and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Goldie Vance appears to be about a girl who works in a hotel, but she is more than that. She is curious, and she solves crimes.

That should be enough to get you into this. It is fun, light, and the cast and crew of heroes and villains are fun. This is all taking place in Florida, during the hight of the space program, so of course there are cold war bad guys and astranauts, and fun stuff like that.

And Goldie, Goldie is great.

Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys strong female characters, and comic books, and oh, this is an ongoing series, and this is just the first collection.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Goldie Vance is a teenager working in the hotel that her father manages. Right now she's a valet but has aspirations to be a detective. To that end, she helps the hotel's detective (whether he wants it or not) solve various cases like a disappearing necklace. But then the man who lost the necklace also disappears and the mysteries just build from there. What is the mysterious symbol on the necklace? Who is the woman romancing the hotel detective? Will Goldie and her father really be kicked out of the hotel because of her dubious methods of solving cases?
I didn't love everything about this story but it's some great world building, wonderful illustrations, and a main character who is a couple of steps left of norm.

Four stars

I loved Goldie Vance Vol. 1 so, so much! The almost retro setting was great, the cast of characters was so much fun (and very diverse!!), the mystery had quite some twists and turns, and the story was fantastic. I also really liked the art style, which was very bright, colorful and fun.
I would highly recommend this to anyone, and I can't wait to pick up the other volumes.

Oh. My. Goodness. I think this is definitely one of my new favorite comics. The illustrations are perfect, the plot is perfect (Nancy Drew meets Eloise is an A++ description), & Goldie herself is perfect. I'm going to run out & purchase a physical copy for myself because I loved it that much & will be anxiously awaiting the next installment!

I found this title charming. The attention to period detail - in the architecture, clothing, and slang - really made the book. I'm not sure that my students will appreciate the Cold War/Space Race aspects of the story, but I predict the mystery angle and Speed Racer-esque action scenes will make up for it. I'm always on the lookout for new graphic novels to share. and it's nice to have this as an option.

Squeeeeeee! That is my reaction to all of this! Detectives, Russians who are up to no good, cute romance between Diane and Goldie, and much much more. Oh did I mention the sweet art?

The book quickly jumps into what Goldie does best, being a detective, locating items, people, solving cases (I had quite a laugh at that little kid, the way he looked with utter boredom like he couldn't have given a poopoo about being saved or not). After that it is a whirlwind of mystery, slice of life, and my favourite part (yes, the mystery and detective stuff is great, but this one just took the cherry and the entire sundae with it) the obvious romance between Goldie and Diane. At first it seems to be only Goldie crushing hard on Diane, being sad about her going on a date with someone else, but then you also see that Diane is definitely feeling something for Goldie! Squeeee!

Goldie was a terrific, smart, fun gal who definitely didn't mind breaking some rules, or laws, to get to the bottom of a mystery. Even if that meant borrowing some cars, which is easy for her to do as she works as a valet at the hotel in which her dad also works.
I loved how determined she was, even when things did go wrong she kept going. She just thought of a way to get out of it, even if it meant breaking a window and falling down. Wow!

We also have a mean girl (plus she is rich, yes, fill in all the tropes), but thankfully (because really if she had a bigger role I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the book so much) she doesn't have a big role in this one.

The mystery was a delight, I had fun seeing in what direction it would go now.

Walter was also great fun and he makes a great detective.

It was quite a surprise to see Goldie's mom, and also see her job (I wouldn't mind a job like that).

We also have some other romance going on, this time between two secondary characters, but I was happy to see it happen. I know I was cheering for them to get together. Rob is such a sweet guy, he does everything for that girl.

What I would have liked to see was a bit of background on why Goldie wants to be a detective, maybe some older cases. This feeling was quite strong in the beginning, but as the story started to unfold I just didn't mind it that much any more. Still, after reading it, I am curious about it and would love to see a book about it.

The art is perfect for this book. I really love the style of it and the dynamic way the character show their emotions and much more.

I would highly recommend this comic and I can't wait for Goldie to solve more mysteries.

I love Goldie Vance! This series is great for most (all?) ages. The retro setting is fantastic, and the story's twists and turns are a lot of fun. The art is bright and colorful, and the characters are all quite stylish.
