A good ending to this series. I was glad to read the brother of the Alex who was kidnapped in the first book. it was slow at times but overall a good read.

BARNABY LINSCOTT, under orders from the Crown, must apprehend or kill one of England’s most elusive villains. The means to accomplish his mission are anything but clear, but his mind is resolved. The man has already murdered three government agents, and Barnaby vows he will not be the fourth, though he has little to lose. That is, until he meets the partner assigned to carry out his deadly mission.

LADY MILLICENT CHANDLER has lost everything. Her beautiful Cliffside Manor has been burned, her parents, her brother Thomas, and her sister Polly all murdered. When her trusted servants bring her their suspicions that her handsome neighbor is directly involved, she knows exactly what she’ll do. She will accept his proposal of marriage. And take her revenge.

This book is the 4th in a series. It can be read as a stand alone, although you might get a better idea of the character's motivations if you had read the other ones first.

I read the book in a couple of sittings. There was nothing wrong with it, it just didn't really hold my attention/interest that well. 3*

Darn I have to say Lady Laura Landon and you do deserve such title, you wrenched every emotion out of me with that last chapter, hats off to you, now where do I begin, first off this story started with an exciting and thrilling run. It was well orchestrated and absolutely well written, I personally didn’t find the emeralds played a big role but the characters were awesome, Barnaby, Radburn, and Millicent, the key players and all the others, well done. Although the romance part was great the snippets of action, mystery, betrayal tinged with a little jealousy made this book into the masterful work of art it is.

Not really my cup of tea. Thanks for the opportunity to read.

While I liked the idea behind the book and all the thrilling elements were perfect, the characters appeared too lost to actually make a bond witht the reader. While the title is dramatic and understandable, the cover image looks far from a regency novel and resembles more of a jewelery advert

Barnaby Linscott has a job to do for the Crown. He is shot as he approaches the house where he is to meet those with the info to the assignment ahead of him. As he awakes he finds a beautiful young lady sitting next to the bed. Lady Millicent Chandler is who is suppose to assist him in his assignment. As soon as they can they moved to join Lord Radburn. Lady Millicent is to marry him. She hates him for the death of her family but is going through with the approach to the marriage to find out what happened to explosives he is to sell to foreign governments. Lord Radburn gives her a necklace which is only part of a set. The rest is in a Swiss bank vault to use as pressure for what a Frenchman wants. Many twists to the story.

This was the perfect read for a cold winter's evening. A great read for fans of regency type romances. The story was somewhat different from the standard regency format, with a few interesting twists of turns, but very important: the love story ran fairly predicatably throughout. Would recommend for light reading, along with any of the author's previous books.
