Just the thought of Scotland, Highlanders and kilts. Yummy! |
I have read so many historical romances in my reading life that I should probably just bench them for a bit…not give up…but take an extended vacation from them. That way I don’t feel like I’m reading the same stuff over and over. Just sayin… I did enjoy reading this, but I liked it…didn’t love it. Sorcha and Malcolm are great and I liked the way they interacted with each other. I just didn’t feel much from them, but then again the book is fast paced and I prefer a slow buildup that gives you that lasting love type of feel. So if Historical Highland romance is your thing, then give this a read because you’ll enjoy it! |

I was totally captivated and mesmerized from start to finish. It is a fast paced, page turner, that I just could not put down! It is filled with all the elements Scottish historical romance readers love. This novel will leave you breathless, with a storyline that has so many twists and turns - not knowing what could happen could possibly happen next. “How To Lose A Highlander” by Michelle McLean is absolutely brilliant! I can’t recommend this book enough! I can hardly wait for the next book in “The MacGregor Lairds” series! ***Disclamer- I received an advance readers copy from the publisher. I voluntarily agreed to do a fair review and blog through netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own. |
A romance that will keep you turning the pages. The characters were so well done you wanted to see what happens in the end. An author I will be checking out again. |

Malcolm MacGregor has went to court to get the king to intervene with the constant attacks by his enemy. He didn’t expect the king to force Malcolm to wed his enemy’s daughter, Sorcha Campbell. Sorcha’s is furious that she’s forced to marry her father’s enemy. She’s determined to drive him nuts enough to refuse the marriage. I really liked this story. I liked both characters. I liked watching as each of them slowly changed their minds and hearts about each other. I highly recommend. |

This book was just ok in my opinion. It was supposed to be a new twist on Taming of the Shrew, but I didn't really feel there was anything new here other than the setting. It started out with a good setup, but then the plot just plodded along. |
"How to Lose a Highlander" by Michelle McLean tells the story of Malcolm and Sorcha, forced to wed to alleviate tensions between two families. While not overly happy with this scenario, the two fight their attraction for each other and try to one up the other throughout. It does make for some fun times but I did think it went on a little too long. Sorcha is a feisty one, not the typical timid lady often found in historical tales. While I liked her feistiness and sass, I did feel it went a bit overboard at times. Malcolm, our sexy Scottish Hero, is just that - sexy! I liked him a lot and his treatment of Sorcha impressed me, even when she might not have deserved his kindness and patience. Throughout the tale, there are some tears shed and some chuckles here and there. This is an enjoyable read that, while maybe not over the top exciting with adventure and not overly HOT, it was still fun to watch Sorcha and Malcolm maneuver their way on their journey. Ms. McLean, a new author for me, did impress me and I look forward to reading future (and past) works by her. |
I love reading Campbell vs MacGregor stories so I jumped on this when it was offered and I wasn't disappointed. In trying to end the present feud between Malcolm MacGregor and Angus Campbell, King Charles II orders Campbell"s daughter, Sorcha to Marry Malcolm. Calamity ensues because, of course, neither wants the marriage. Thank goodness Malcolm has the patience of a saint because I was ready to choke Sorcha. Yes, she drove me nuts. Malcolm on the other hand, he is a hard working Laird trying to take care of his people and not upset the King in the process. I don't want to give too much away but Sorcha does redeem herself. This is a fun, witty, and at times serious story. There is a lot of witty banter that is sometimes downright hilarious. It's also captivating, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this series. |
How to Lose a Highlander (The MacGregor Lairds, #1) I laughed a lot. The comparison to Taming of she Shrew and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days threw me off my game a bit but it had highlanders. I was not real sure what I was going to get. This was a historic highlander romantic comedy. This was light, fresh, well-paced and full of fun. This was my first read from Michelle and I had fun. This was about a feud but more occurred. There was not the overstated drama, but there was sparks. |
Malcolm has had enough of the reckless Campbell’s stealing his property and terrifying his tenants. Adamant that the attacks are not provoked by him or his people, he goes to a masquerade ball to speak with the King. Sorcha has had more than her share of admirers, but she would not settle for just anyone. And she wouldn’t dream of marrying a McGregor, whose been their rival clam since her birth. When the two encounter each other without knowing each other’s identity, things get even more interesting. In order to settle the feud, the king demands them to wed. Neither wants to lose their head (literally) by refusing, so they each – separately- come up with a plan. To get the other one to request annulment, blaming the spouse for the dissolution of the marriage. I understood Sorcha’s plan and ambition to carry it out; but the fact is, after a while she came across as just plain childish. She worked my nerves as much as she did Malcolm’s, to the point that I almost closed the book. However, I’m glad I didn’t. One paragraph reminded me of why I initially liked her, and my tolerance level increased. I love me a Scot, and Malcolm is no exception. His jovial, but alpha personality had me hooked. He was a saint when it came to dealing with Sorcha, but he didn’t let her run all over him. Once they reached his home, things improved greatly. The staff had my attention, and Sorcha gained even more favor. I enjoyed the comradery between Malcolm and John. There’s a bit of suspense. I was sure at had some things figured out; and when I realized all wasn’t what it seemed, I couldn’t help but to smile. I love me some twists. Kudos to McLean. Despite my temporary eye-rolling-ready-to-put-the-book-down moment, I really enjoyed this story. I recommend it. |
Sorcha and Malcolm are forced to marry to end the feuding between their colonies. They are not happy about it and plot against each other throughout. Can they ever be happy? This was a funny light read. I got annoyed at Sorcha at times because I felt she went over the top with her plotting but by the end I liked her. I wish we got to see more about when her father came instead of going straight to the epilogue. It felt like it had been leading up to that and then bam it ended. Overall it was a good story though. Rating: 3.5 stars |
Where should I start but saying a huge thank you for providing a copy for review. I'm one of these readers who is very fussy about historical romance and rarely give higher than a three star for them. This highlander book scored a five start within the first few pages. I was completely blown away by the strong plotline. The highly strung emotions and the sheer attention to details I absolutely loved Sorcha and Malcolm. Sorcha would have made any weak man run for the hills the minute she started her screaming, complaining and her childish behaviour but not Malcolm. To be quite honest I felt sorry for him. Two weeks traveling with her would be insane. One thing I loved about this author was her ability to make you FEEL the same thing these characters do. At one point I was so angry with Malcolm I was actually hissing at my kindle. I laughed, cry and huffed over this sweet as hell Romance. This author was added to my favourite historical author list. This is a huge must read for lovers of strong, funny, stubborn highlander men. |
3.5 stars I love a good Highlander romance story. Guys in kilts are my weakness. You've seen the pics, you get what I'm talking about ;) So, when I saw this up for review I knew I had to grab it. The Campbell and MacGregor clans have been enemies for centuries and now that the MacGregors are back in favor with the King, he's tired of the Campbells raiding their lands. Malcolm MacGregor, Laird of Glenlyon, goes to King Charles to have him put a stop to it. But the Laird of the Campbells is there too to try to do the same thing. King Charles orders Malcolm to marry Sorcha Campbell, figuring their marriage would put a stop to the feud. However, neither Malcolm nor Sorcha are happy about having to marry the other and vow to make each others lives as miserable as possible in an effort to put an end to the marriage. Thankfully Sorcha was really a kind-hearted caring heroine or I wouldn't have liked her at all LOL She was attracted to Malcolm but was a raving witch in hopes that he'd leave her. Then when he ignored her or left her at the keep to tend to his tenants, she was mad that he was doing exactly what she set out to do. It got on my nerves a bit. But she really was kind and good and her interactions with the people of Glenlyon was awesome! Watching her soften towards Malcolm and come to care for him was perfect. Malcolm was kind and gruff and everything you'd expect from a Highland warrior. He had a bit of a sense of humor and was quick and easy to show his affection. This was my first by Michelle McLean and won't be my last :) *thanks to Tasty Book Tours for sharing a copy of this with me* |
Sorcha Campbell is going to be presented to King Charles. Her father is having trouble with a neighboring clan and has asked for the king's help in fixing it. He is hoping her pretty face will help sway him in their favour. Malcolm MacGregor the Laird of Glenlyon is a friend of King Charles and hopes that will help when it comes to settling the dispute with his neighbour. He can't have his clan at war anymore. The king's answer is inevitable, and makes both parties even angrier. This is quite the adventure. Our protagonists are both strong and stubborn but also genuinely good people. There are lots of laughs at their behaviour. Very interesting characters and fabulous story line. I loved it and look forward to reading the next in the series. |
A unique take on the movie How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days, this lighthearted romance will entertain and engage readers with all the ways Sorcha and Malcolm try to have their marriage annulled without causing a war. It's funny and definitely sexy. It's a short, witty and engaging story that is a definite page turner. |
With a B.S. in History, M.A. in English, a sense of humor by a woman who loves a happy ever after, Author Michelle McLean pens an entertaining tale. Taking a feud of long-standing between the Campbells and the MacGregors, she weaves a tale which will keep you laughing, if for nothing more than the heated banter between Sorcha Campbell and Malcolm MacGregor. King Charles II is tired of this feud. He wants it to end, therefore commands this marriage to take place. Malcolm doesn’t want to displease the king, for he is a friend and he’s been good with the MacGregor clan. He cares not to have the king’s wrath and lose his standing. However, it isn’t below him to think of ways to get this marriage annulled, particularly since his new wife makes him wish he didn’t have ears. His plan is to have her proclaimed insane. He feels a bit guilty about it, but values his freedom above all. As Malcolm wants his freedom, so does Sorcha Campbell. To be wedded to the enemy? Never!! She and her maid, Berta, work up a scheme which backfires a wee bit. Well, maybe a lot! Her plan is to ask for an annulment on the grounds of her new husband unable to consummate the union. When I wasn’t laughing, I was rolling my eyes--scenes very cleverly written. These two totally deserve each other! Malcolm just wants to go back to the Highlands – alone. But it doesn’t work out that way. Sorcha’s duplicity very nearly gets herself imprisoned. Malcolm saves Sorcha from herself thereby sealing his fate -- at least for the near future. Malcolm is honorable to the end, although it may just kill him. Sorcha has a change of heart. Maybe she could live with Malcolm, but her maid has a poor influence on her, making her doubt Malcolm’s intentions. Malcolm has little faith in his new bride and easily thinks the worst of her. Can these two ever move forward, already? Outside forces create more havoc. This adds up to one fast-paced battle between Sorcha and Malcolm. Eventually, both hearts are ensnared, giving the reader a most satisfying happy ever after. Review copy provided by the publisher and NetGalley for a fair review. |
I love a story that has the two, main characters at odds with each other as they unwittingly fall in love, all the while digging in their heels and trying to resist their pull towards each other. This delightful theme always provides lots of laughs and plenty of sparks, and this book and its characters were no exception. The chemistry between Sorcha and Malcolm was palpable and simply electric. The banter between them kept me laughing out loud. It was endlessly entertaining "watching" the two of them antagonize and try to repel each other so as to cause one of them to ask for an annulment. The harder they fought to put a wedge between themselves the more they seemed to be drawn together, which was maddeningly frustrating for both of them. But, once they capitulate and surrender to their burgeoning feelings all bets are off! I think this is the start to a very intriguing and promising series, and I am very eager to read more in this line. *I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Entangled Publishing, LLC in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so. |
