I wanted to like this book, I even went back and reread the prior book in the series, and had really liked these characters, and loved the H and h of this book as represented in that book. Somehow, in their own story, they just didn't work. The h is annoying and frustrating, the H is great, but too noble. And sometimes, it just doesn't seem realistic. The story is quite complicated. And seriously, for someone to sue for 400,00 pounds in that time period? Totally outrageous amounts, absurd. And petty lawsuits were unlikely in that time.

This was a 50/50 read for me (hence the 3 stars rating).
There were many things I enjoyed about this book. The overall tone was quite charming.
Emma's family was adorable and I enjoyed the connection they had with Nick as well. The love story itself was cute and I liked that Emma and Nick observed eachother for years before things got serious.

Unfortunately the writing was very amateurish. The pace was weird and the characters, especially Emma, weren't very consistent. Emma, 25 and a duke's daughter spoke and acted like a child. Her ideals were grand and fit of a mature lady but her behaviour spoke differently. She sounded 15 more often than not.

At last, the sensual parts of the story were almost comical. I don't want to give too much away but there were times where I was like "Make up your mind Author, is she worldly or is she not ? she can't be both !!". You'll see when you get to that part :)

All in all a cute read if you don't mind some eye rolling.

This is a terrific book about a young woman named Emma, daughter of a duke, raised in a happy family who is allowed many freedoms for a female of her time by her indulging parents. She has known Nick, heir to a dukedom, through her older brother for years. Nick is a man who did not have a happy youth and as an adult is a serious, rather lonely man. Emma becomes embroiled in seeking justice for a horrible wrong against her best friend and Nick, as a favor to Emma's brother, steps in to assess the situation.
This story had such an interesting plot and the characters were colorful as well. Nick and Emma are drawn together while engaging in intrigue and they definitely have more than a little spark! I highly recommend this book to readers of romance who want a book they cannot put down because they just need to turn the next page. Loved it!

I loved Janna MacGregor’s first book and this second one did not disappoint - bring on a third!

Emma Cavensham is head-strong, intelligent and independent, and what she doesn't need in her life is the meddling, cool-hearted Nicholas St. Mauer. But Nick thinks Emma needs someone to keep her out of trouble, and for the time being he'll step up to the role. Sparks fly, heads butt and tension mounts as these two struggle to balance their own desires against society's dictates and Emma's quest to avenge her friend, Lena, whose death she is convinced was caused by her abusive husband.

There are some really great themes in this story - I loved Emma's unwavering feminism and fortitude in the face of her unsympathetic male friends and relatives as she sets out to help women who have no one else to turn to. Nick's backstory is equally heart-wrenching and we see the pressures that men, too, face in a strict society. There was plenty of tension - romantic and otherwise - to keep the book going, and it was lovely watching Emma and Nick grow into their own and closer together.

I was invited by the publisher to read this book. When I got the invitation I had been feeling down in the dumps and thought what better way to cheer up then reading a romance novel. After reading the book I am definitely feeling better.

This book follows Nick and Emma. Both of them are really stubborn and never want to bee married; Nick because he doesn't want to let anyone in after his father basically disowned him, and Emma because she doesn't want a man to control her. I tended to like Nick more than Emma as Emma started to get annoying in the second half.

Nick and Emma's relationship grows throughout the book and grows especially fast after they are forced to marry. Their marriage seemed to be working until something threatens to tear them apart. Ultimately, of course, I loved where they ended up at the end.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the galley.

The Bride Who Got Lucky is an interesting, fast-paced historical romance featuring a strong-spirited, soft-hearted heroine and a hero who grows to support her.

Lady Emma Cavensham is an atypical society lady. She has a passion for rare (and sometimes forbidden) books and a strong desire to support struggling women in society gain independence from the terrifying men in their lives. Nicholas St. Mauer grew up rejected by his father and has since become wildly successful, channeling his anger and bitterness into amassing a huge fortune. The two run across each other when Nick's friend (Emma's brother-in-law) sends him to prevent Emma from making a dangerous meeting...to purchase a rare book. The two grow to learn and respect one another as they both battle their demons.

I enjoyed this historical romance mainly because it took a stab at exploring how truly bound women at the time were to the men in their lives, for better or for worse. The heroine was strong willed and knew her mind, even as she exposed her vulnerabilities. The hero supported her unconventional dreams and wild ideas and allowed her to challenge him. It was a good, heart-warming read and was quick-paced so makes a great fast read.

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a fair review.

This book was great! I cannot decide who was more stubborn, Emma or Somerton! Their antics had me laughing and the heat between them was fire!

Nicholas St. Mauer, Earl of Somerton has a bit of a rough outlook on life. Rejected by his father - his mother having died in childbirth – Nick has sworn to encase his feelings in ice. He learned at a young age that one could only depend on one’s self and so he set out to prove to himself, to everyone, to his father, that he needed no one to make is way in life. Success was measured by the sum of his wealth and everything else be damned; most especially weaknesses contrived from emotion. He didn’t have time for it. Didn’t want it. And he definitely didn’t want even a hint of what he might be missing by closing himself off from fickle emotions that caused pain. So when he steps in to help his only friend retrieve Lady Emma from potential ruin and impending danger, it has nothing to do with his growing need to protect her. Protection isn’t such a foreign feeling, but everything else brewing, unidentifiable to him, is.
Lady Emma Cavensham is just as resistant to the idea of love and marriage as Nick is. While she doesn’t go the extreme of avoiding society, neither is she looking to get herself forever bound to a brutal husband. Sure, her parents share an idea marriage, as does her “sister”, but she feels theirs are uncommon matches. After all, a husband dictates to his wife and in cases like her friend, Lena, murders them. She will not be thwarted from bringing the evil man to justice, but every time she hatches a plan to do just that, Nick shows up. Pair his constant unwanted presence with a rising attraction that could be likened to electric magnetism, and you’ve got a recipe for heartache. Or maybe not. But is it worth the risk?
I found this story a fun, romantic read. While the book was quite predictable and there was very little suspense, it was time well spent. I do not regret reading this book, but I had the strangest sense of déjà vu the entire time I was reading it. Ms. MacGregor goes in to quite a bit of detail explaining the events that have molded her main characters into who they are, but I failed to make a deep connection with either of them. Perhaps if I had read the first book and came to the story with a bit of knowledge of both Nick and Emma, it would have been different. That said, even though this book is a 2nd in series, it read well without leaving a reader feeling lost in the absence of prior knowledge. I encountered a few typos while reading this story and I hate to hold that against an unreleased copy because it is very likely going to be rectified prior to the release date, but there it is. I suppose we don’t always need suspense or impulsiveness in a book when we just want something to read. And for a situation such as that, this book is satisfying. But if you are looking for a deep-rooted connection that sucks you in and leaves you aching for more, you won’t find that in this story. I would also have liked to see a bit more wit and sarcasm, sparing as it was in this novel. So overall, as a first experience with this author, it is a satisfying read, but lacking in character depth and unpredictability. Given the chance the read another book by Ms. MacGregor, I most likely would. However, I might choose outside of this series just to see if her styles vary at all.

Lady Emma Cavensham fears marriage, and is determined to make a difference in the lives of women. Her best friend was murdered by her own husband and guilt drives Emma even though she would not have been able to help. She feels as though she could have done something, and is determined to find justice for Leah.
Enter Nick St. Maurer (Somerton) with devils of his own to deal with. He is charged by his best friend Lord Alex Pembrooke to retrieve her from the dangerous situation she inserted herself in by trying to get the goods on Leah's husband.
At the inn in Portsmouth where she was staying at....before her meeting with a reluctant informant, he rescued her from the Earl of Aulton...Lena's murderer, Aulton set out to ruin their reputation with the ton.
Forced into a quick marriage, their connection grows quickly, but each one is fighting inner battles that prevent the total honesty that is needed for a H.E.A.
When he finally realizes what she means to him, honest talk leads to a understanding for both that does give them that happy ending.
I requested and received an ARC from NetGalley because I loved the first in the series.

This was second book in the series. I loved Nick, had already enjoyed him since the last book when we met him, as being Alex's best friend. Now Emma, kind of annoyed me, she came off as a brat to me, I understood that she was supposed to be a feminist in her day, and that she wanted to justice for her friend Lena, but I just felt that she came off as annoying and immature. I was however glad to read about Claire and Alex's relationship, and to see how they were doing.

This novel was a great read and I could not put it down!! I enjoyed this novel much more so than the first novel in the series. You do not need to read the first novel, but if you want some background about the supporting characters, you can read it. I love how the author incorporated a strong, independent woman with a strong, independent man. Both had different goals there were trying to achieve, but their determination to do so was an entertaining match.
Lady Emma Cavensham is the daughter of a duke and believes woman should have the same rights as men. During this time, woman are treated like possessions and have to obey their husbands. When Emma learns of her friend Lena's death, along with Lena's child, she seeks justice against Lena's husband based on information she received. She keeps pursuing this, which draws the attention of Nicholas St. Mauer, Earl of Somerton.
Nick grew up without love, since his mother died in childbirth and his father wanted nothing to do with him. Nick's past has greatly affected his current life. Until he can comes to terms with people from his past, he will not achieve what he desires most. Nick made a vow he would make it on his own and his fortunes would surpass his father's. Everything was going to plan, until he met Emma. Emma is like a breathe of fresh air to Nick, one of the few people he truly cares about. However, Emma swears off marriage, seeing the independence it takes away from women. Nick has no intentions of marrying either. However, due to Emma's persistence in Lena's death, Emma and Nick find themselves getting married to avoid a scandal, even though the ignite the passion in each other. With neither willing to compromise, it leads to a battle of wills when Nick's past interferes with Emma's work to help women who find themselves in troubling situations. Their love for each other is there, even if they do not admit to each other, but will their stubborn natures end their relationship before it truly has begun?

This is a fun and light read about some very serious subjects. One of which is domestic abuse and another is about women's rights. I think the reason it is so light and fun has to do with the wonderful relationship the two main characters have, Nick and Emma.

Nick and Emma have known each other for years. They are friendly and Nick is the friend of Emma's cousin's husband. Sound confusing, I was too at the beginning. There are a lot of names of lords and I had to go back and read some parts again to figure out who is who.

This is book 2 in the series and book 1 I never read so it can stand alone very nicely. The main story revolved around the drama of Emma's best friend Lana who has died/been murdered by her abusive husband. Emma is trying to get her friend's maid to testify and make the husband pay.

The do that she takes some risks and Nick cannot stay away from Emma so he rescues her. But both hate the idea of marriage and so what happens when Emma is left in a delicate position when they are found together Well no spoilers here.

I LOVED Nick and Emma together. They are alot of fun and I loved how crazy Emma makes Nick's world. Definitely an author I would enjoy reading more from. The writing was pretty good, and I really loved the characters and story.

This is Janna MacGregor’s second book and I loved it as much as the first one. It can be read without reading the first book in this series though some of the characters from The Bad Luck Bride appear in this one. Lady Emma Cavensham loves to read and covets rare books. While sneaking off to buy a rare book, she is stopped by reclusive Nick St. Mauer, Earl of Somerton. Her cousin Claire has sent Nick to find her and prevent a scandal. (Nick’s best friend is Claire’s husband Alex.) As punishment, her parents are sending her to their country estate, but before she leaves Nick gives her his copy of the book she was trying to obtain and her first kiss.

Nick is the Duke of Renton’s son and heir, but they have been estranged since Nick was sent to school as a child. Nick’s goal is to amass more money than his father and never let anyone into his heart.

Three years later, Emma is grieving the death of her best friend, Lena, who fell down the stairs while pregnant. Emma believes Lena’s husband killed her and is determined to find proof as Lena’s brother is off fighting Napoleon. Emma wants justice for Lena. She sneaks off to Portsmouth to find Lena’s maid and while dining at an inn, Lena’s husband threatens her. Nick has discovered where she went and follows her. Found by her brothers in her room at the inn, they inform her she’ll have to marry Nick. Lena has her own ideas of what she’d like to do but Nick convinces her to wed.

There is a lot more going on in this book and I hope I’ve said enough to entice you to read it without ruining the story. I highly recommend this book. Best line: “Books could take you on the grandest adventures.”
Thanks to Janna and her publisher for giving me this ARC. No one asked me to write a review.
