The writing didn't hold my attention. Love the premise.
I appreciate the opportunity to review. Sorry for the long delay in feedback. I'm working on clearing out my Netgalley backlog. I am DNF'ing all books that just don't work within the first 50-100 pages. Trying to find the joy in reading again by going through the hundreds of abandoned books here.
Much like the second book the girl who saved ghosts, this one was a fantastic read as well. I’d be more then happy to buy this one for my shelf as well.
I requested this book along with two others by the author because I liked the description. Once I started the first book in the series, I quickly realized I didn't care for the the writing style or the main character and couldn't finish. This meant I also didn't read the other two.
Thank you for sending them to me, but I just couldn't make myself read them. Sorry.
I received the eARC on NetGalley for an honest review.
Book CW: sexual assault
The premise of this book was interesting, and for the most part it was good, but about the first third of it wasn't as strong as the rest. I found the author was a bit random in her style for that first third: sometimes contemporary, sometimes purple prose. Also she would throw in references to stones for colour description which was distracting, or something like the main character writing notes in Chinese characters, which seemed to come out of nowhere and was not mentioned again.
Once through that first third, the story really hit its stride and wrapped things up well. I was a touch disappointed that the "Big Bad" of the book was just around the edges, but not fully confronted. I guess that was on purpose to leave something for a sequel.
This book is awesome! I really enjoyed reading it.
I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review
A story of a girl who can see ghosts right from childhood. But then she ignores them for a reason until its impossible. I found the story genuine and an interesting read. I liked the narration as well.
The girl who ignored ghosts by K C Tansley.
She tried to ignore them. But some things won’t be ignored.
Kat Preston doesn’t believe in ghosts. Not because she’s never seen one, but because she saw one too many. Refusing to believe is the only way to protect herself from the ghost that tried to steal her life. Kat’s disbelief keeps her safe until her junior year at McTernan Academy, when a research project for an eccentric teacher takes her to a tiny, private island off the coast of Connecticut.
This was a fantastic read with brilliant characters.
Brilliant scenes all the way through the book. Love to see this as a movie. 5*.
The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts is the first book in the Unbelievables series by K.C. Tansley is a young adult novel. Accompanied by her research partner, her best friend, and another student, she investigates the disappearance of Cassie Mallory and Sebastian Radcliffe on their wedding night in 1886. Evan’s scientific approach to everything leaves Kat on her own to confront a host of unbelievables: ancestral curses, powerful spells, and her strange connection to the ghosts that haunt Castle Creighton. But that’s all before Kat’s yanked through a magic portal and Evan follows her. When the two of them awaken 129 years in the past with their souls trapped inside the bodies of two wedding guests, everything changes. Together, Kat and Evan race to stop the wedding-night murders and find a way back to their own time—and their own bodies—before their souls slip away forever.
The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts is a book that captured my imagination. I liked Kat's intelligence and perseverance. She is not opposed to working hard, and is willing to pitch in even when it puts her personal safety at risk. Ignoring the ghosts has worked well thus far, but surrounding herself with the research about a murder and curse is not helping her keep the ghosts at bay. Jumping in further with the research trip makes it impossible to keep her shields up. I liked the dynamic between Kat and her best friend Mallory, and the humor that fellow student Seth brings to the group. I will admit that I was initially creeped out a bit by the connection between Kat and Joshua- the next possible victim of the curse the group is investigating. I enjoyed the enemy to friend vibe between Kat and Evan, but I could enjoy a gothic style mystery without any kind of romance hinted at just fine- not all girls are looking to forge romantic relationships their entire lives. I would love to pick up a young adult or new adult novel that skips hints at love triangle and romance once and awhile, particularly when it is not vital to the mystery or larger story line. That being said, I found that the mystery and paranormal aspects of the story were the focus for the majority of the book. The magical time travel was well done, and I liked the explanation of ghosts, spirits, and the differences between them. The curse and mystery surrounding it were well constructed, and interesting to watch unravel. I liked the layers and complexity of the curse, mystery, and the paranormal aspects that connect them and the characters. I did get a little bored with some of the ritual and spell work, and the emotional games being played in the past. However, I did enjoy the read and might pick up the next book if I run across it. However, I am not going out looking for it at this point.
The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts is a good mystery with gothic and paranormal aspects. While I do not have patience with emotional games, I think there are many readers that will enjoy the read and get fully invested with the characters and mystery.
I loved this series can’t wait to read the next one. Great characters! I loved the action and the time travel.
This is a pretty enjoyable book. I absolutely loved the murder mystery in the past, and I found myself questioning Toria throughout the novel. I couldn't decide whether she was good or bad until the last 10% of the novel. The characterisation was pretty good, though I much preferred the characters in the past to the characters in the present.
It was a bit difficult keeping track of all the different characters, and I wish that the four families aspect had been explored a little more. I don't understand why Toria and Sebastien couldn't get married because Toria had to protect Sebastien, so parts were a little confusing.
Ghosts! Time Travel! Witch Craft! A centuries old mystery and a curse! A smart protagonist?! A good best friend?! No immediate love interest?! No sucky YA cliches?!
I Loved it! I read the two books a couple of days apart but It only took me a day to read each book. Once I started the book, I was hooked until the end. First off, I like the characters which already starts this book off right. I want to be friends with them. The time travel aspect was very interesting and seems to be a theme. Seeing the events through the eyes of people who had been there. I was very surprised by parts of the book and how certain things came together. It was very good, I needed to know what happened so much i finished the book in one day.
GO READ IT. Bonus: It’s appropriate for everyone!
This series is so underrated, honestly. It's a really good YA ghost mystery.
I had varying thoughts about this one. Some parts were better than others. At times I just got a bit mixed up and it seemed quite jumbled to me.
..I just forgot the main characters name for a second. Not a good sign. Well it follows Kat who is someone who can see ghosts although pretends they don't exist as when she was nine years old one tried to take over her body and she didn't want a repeat experience. Following an assignment from her professor she goes with her best friend Morgan, Seth (some guy) and Evan (some other "jerk" guy), to find out the story behind the Radcliffe curse and yeah..break it before this guy Joshua dies on his 23rd birthday as happens to all the males in the family.
So Kat has to make herself "believe" again to figure stuff out. And then her and Evan end up time-travelling through a mirror so I'm like yeah okay, sure. That's when it gets all jumbled as they're now in the bodies of people from 129 years ago when a murder ensued and a curse began. These two people are Toria and Alistair (Kat is a reincarnation and Alistair is the ancestor of Evan.) The past characters are more interesting and vivid than those of the present.
I got through this so that's a feat. It was okay but not the best and I couldn't feel a connection to any of the main characters. Obviously Evan and Kat will go on to have a thing but there is no chemistry there even if he stroked away the worry lines on her forehead with his fingers, and she didn't bat an eyelid *eye-roll*
I'll attempt the second book now hoping it gives me more vivid main characters and chemistry and banter.
I voluntarily reviewed an Reader Copy of this book which I received through Netgalley.
This book is a really great start of a series. It's really well written and I enjoyed it very much.
This is book about mystery and murder, and what are you going to do when you believe in ghost or not. Kate see ghost must tell her self they, doesn’t exist, because if she believes in them people can think she is nuts. So can she figure out what is going on,before something happens.
I think it was interesting and held you keep wondering what’s going to happen next, the only problem I had was it’s was so slow going for my liking.
I
I received a free ecopy of this book in return for an honest review. Many thanks to Netgalley and and the publisher for the opportunity.
This cosy, supernatural, mystery, is the kind of book where you slide into the story like a hot knife into butter. You pick it up intending to read a couple of pages and before you know it, you are deep into the story and unwilling to stop reading even to eat or sleep.
Kat, as a child, could see ghosts, but then had to make conscious choice to ‘not believe’ in order to protect herself from them. The story picks up when Kat is a young adult and researching an unsolved murder that is over 100 years old. Try as she might, the ghosts seem to be moving in on her. When visiting the scene of the murder, she and a colleague travel back in time to the events just before the murder.
The characters have just enough depth to make you care, but not enough to slow the story down. The story has enough twists to make it interesting but not so many as to be confusing. There is romance but it is a light touch and doesn’t overtake the story. Generally the characters’ emotions were a little oversimplified, but that is part of what makes it an easy read. There are quite a few wiccan details about crystals and herbs that distracted me a bit (I had to look up the term balsamic moon), but it gave she story a ring of supernatural authenticity that I liked. I will be looking to read book number 2 fairly soon.
If you are looking for a lighthearted mystery with supernatural overtones, you will enjoy this one.
I've read quite a few paranormal YA books. I found The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts to be a wonderful read. This book was just what I needed to destress and get back into the mode of reading for fun. I thought the characters were wonderfully written. I found myself caring about the main character and sympathizing with her. I found the relationships between the characters to be realistic and engaging. Fans of Marley Gibson's Ghost Huntress series will enjoy the paranormal focus of this book. Fans of Jennifer Donnelly's Revolution will find similarities between this book and that. This book has enough mystery and intrigue to capture the attention of murder mystery lovers, as well as, the perfect amount of romance. Nothing too serious but relationships that could definitely, be expanded on in future novels. The book is so engaging I found it to be just what I was looking for. I can't wait for the sequel to find out where (an when) Kat and her friends end up next.
This was a quick read for a ghost story book. I feel like it could have been a little longer. It felt rushed at parts.
The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts begins with our main character recounting an experience that clearly indicates her alliance with the paranormal. She has done everything she can to ignore this aspect of her character, but then comes an opportunity for college that she can't ignore. Unfortunately, it's part of a bigger plan to force her to recognise her alliance.
There's ghosts, mystery, ancient curses, time travel, romance...a smorgasbord of things to entertain. There were parts of the story that I felt had a lot crammed in to try to explain what was happening, but it rolled along nicely and sets up an interesting book two.
Thank you to NetGalley for the copy provided for review.
"I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review"
I have to admit it took me a little longer to get into this book than I thought it would. After about 30% into the book I then got into the story line and couldn't put it down. This was an interesting read and it is the first time I have read about ghosts in this kind of setting. At times I think there could of been more explaining into what was happening as I felt lost in the story.
Kat was an interesting character and would of loved more of a back story in this book but even without it I still liked her. Evan at first annoyed me but by the end of the book I was wanting Kat and him to end up together, he seems like the perfect guy for her. The other side characters added to the story but would of been great just to have them in it a little bit more and with how short the book is it could of been done without it seeming like the book was dragging on.
I ended up giving this book 3.5 out of 5 stars and will continue on with the book series,
