The beginning of ADVENTUREMAN by Jamie McDonald reminds me of what I now understand to be Jamie's mental formation of an adventure. McDonald is describing a previous cycling adventure, while also describing the health challenges he faced as a child, while also describing his family. As his idea forms into running across Canada to support his hometown and other children's hospitals, the book settles into a pleasant rhythm, much like is seems that Jamie does as begins his next feat. Endearing imperfect, but emotionally honest, the reader can't help but cheer Jamie on, while also feeling inspired to consider what feats they could accomplish.
The writing style is little haphazard, the British words and phrases are sometimes hard to decipher (if your are not British), but McDonald's story and his passion are infectiously compelling to read about. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary, sometimes uplifting, McDonald introduces the reader to countless people who and compelled to help McDonald on his run and McDonald is often inspired by their generosity to push harder. The way his setup comes into place, from his costume, to the baby carriage that carries his supplies (that he names and talks about like it's his pet) is fascinating and hilarious. McDonald's self-reflection periodically through the book is some of the most touching moments I've every read.
It's been a while since I have read a book this inspirational and this entertaining and boy to I want to go have a beer with McDonald, maybe during his next adventure. I think anyone can read this book and feel like inspiration and change are only an idea and an adventure away.
