This is a hard one to review. I just couldn't get in to it. It took me longer than normal to finish it but I did. Kind of proud that I did.

The two main characters are Adam a private investigator and Jillian Lambert who hires Adam to look for her twin sister who she lost twenty years ago. There was a police investigation in to Devon's disappearance but nothing came of it.

Yes it is a mystery but Adam seems to dislike women. Says they are devious. Sorry his words not mine.

I gave it 2.5 stars rounded up. There are a lot of false leads and I admit the ending was a surprise. I am actually unsure if I would recommend it but saying that I guess it is a personal choice. So go for it. Enjoy!

2.5 stars generously rounded up.

This is a cosy mystery with plenty of false leads, some of which could be perceived as plot holes. Or perhaps that's on me as I wasn't paying close enough attention. In short, me and this story didn't get along or more specifically the narration.

The lack of contractions, characters constantly addressing each other by name during a conversation, when it was clear who was who, drove me to distraction. One small example, all from the same page.
Jillian, I'm on your side.
Adam, for the first time I am really frightened.
Jillian, what are you saying

The main character, Adam, is a woman hater, his words. This is after he kissed Jillian, the woman he was hired to help.
And that is why I hated women. They were devious and did not care who they hurt in the process. My precious prince was sitting at home waiting for me and I was being lured down the devil's path.
And his prince's reaction after Adam confessed to fooling around.
I am not mad. I understand completely.
A woman, especially her, could never tear us apart. I might be more jealous of a man, but really a woman!"
What I did enjoy about this story was the setting - Quebec, Canada.

Trigger warnings -murder, suicide, insinuated rape, cheating? or was it? see above.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley. I liked the plot in this book and the characters too but I had a hard time loving the book as a whole. Adam is a private investigator who takes on a strange woman, Jillian, as his client, in her search for her twin sister who disappeared 20 years ago. She is obviously disturbed and not only seems different every time he meets with her, but also omits a lot of facts that Adam discovers while he is working her case. Adam has a friend at the PD who helps him out on the case as it gets more twisted and he gets more involved and discovers mob ties and several other things he did not expect. Adam is a great character, a little quirky, gay and living with his partner, who seems like a super nice guy. The problem I had with the book is the writing. It is SO formal. The way the characters speak and move around are SO stiff and all the descriptions are just formal for lack of a better word. I mean, I am a big fan of perfect grammar and all but in a novel, esp from the first person, I just expect a little less formally in conversation with others and a more casual tone. More contractions and some slang or something? Maybe it's me because I am not Canadian but when people just have conversations even in books, they sound less proper but in this book, the conversations were not written that way and this was to the point that it made me laugh and bothered me. (Like: It is really great to see you here as opposed to It's really great to see you here.) I hope that this makes sense. In general though I liked the characters and the plot.

Adam Garfield has curly red hair and wears colorful flamboyant clothing. He's a Private Investigator and he's gay.

Jillian Lambert has hired Adam to find her twin sister, Devon .. even though she's been missing for 20 years. There had been a police investigation, but nothing was ever solved and it's been a cold case since then.

Adam's search leads him to a theater and its cast of actors. And in turn, that leads to the Montreal Mafia. Jillian doesn't come across as very honest and she has a fear of spirits which seem to haunt her. Even the police seem secretive.

Adam is bound and determined to get at the truth, but the closer he gets, the more danger he puts his own life in, as well as his lover and soon to be husband, Richard.

This is a quirky mystery, filled with unconventional and offbeat characters. The interaction between Adam and Richard is filled with love and even some jovial moments. The author has done a terrific job in weaving false trails from suspect to suspect leading to a surprising ending.

Many thanks to the author / Waldorf Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
