Fleur & Hugh meet by chance in 1943 London while she is out with her friends from the BBC. They have a brief romance and marry. Hugh gets away when he can but it is a few days and he is gone. He flies in behind enemy lives, is captured and through all of the horrible experiences thinking of seeing Fleur again is what keeps him alive.
Fleur has heard nothing of him except he is missing. Lack of communication and time makes her think she should move on after the war. What happens to keep them each going, where does it lead them and how does it change their lives?
