The concept was amazing, but reading on Kindle wasn't the best reading experience.
Didn't like the finale, it felt rushed.

What a strange, strange book. Excellent plotting, uncomfortable and not quite likeable characters - it was impossible not to finish. Highly recommended.

Got to say, I really struggled with it. I kept at it, but it just didn’t hold my interest enough. I know this book has fabulous reviews and I feel it is one I will try again with in the future.

Thanks to NetGalley & Sourcebooks for providing a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting concept, but fraught with inconsistency (to me, anyway). Kind of like watching Lost in book form, because you know that it's going to wrap up in some unsatisfying way (and it kind of did). I think I would've forgiven a lot more if it had been 15-20% shorter, but it's almost like Turton wants you to feel the absolute drudgery of each life his hero experiences. 2 1/2 - 3 stars because it starts like a racehorse and then loses speed and conviction.
I might attempt another Stuart Turton book in the future, but here's hoping it'll be shorter!

Ok so this was not my favorite book. I had a very hard time keeping the characters and plot straight. I kept waiting for a moment of clarity and it just never came. I think the underlying idea had so much potential but it just didn’t do it for me.

I enjoyed this book when I read it, however I did not get to submit full review in time as unfortunately I lost my devices when my house was burgled and it took me a long time to replace my belongings and just get back on track. I have an ereader again (and a laptop, although I am not reactivating my blog and have started a bookstagram instead) and I hope to review again in the future.

This was such a fun read. I was drawn to the unique plot. I was confused, as expected, through some of it until things were cleared up. I thought it was cleverly done and I enjoyed the characters.

This was such a trippy, fascinating book (definitely recommend reading it, not listening to the audiobook version which I found hard to follow). I chose it for the October 2021 book for my online Everyday Reading Book Club.

I would give this 2.5 stars
There seemed to be a lot of hype around this book but I found it tedious. It took me forever to figure out what was going on and get through. The premise of the book is interesting but there are so many characters and so much jumping around it's hard to follow at times

Once again, I appreciate Netgalley allowing me to read this ARC. It's of course not for my middle schoolers, but I did recommend it to some of my colleagues!

What an amazing release for a debut author! I wish it had not taken me so long to read this, but I am so glad that I now have! I love a dark mystery story and if you are into Agatha Christie then this will be great for you! I would have been able to give it a higher rating if it was just a little bit shorter, unfortunately, I did find some of the scenes to be dragged out or used as a content filler and that made it hard to get completely invested in the story. I will likely read from this author again in the future!

An excellent read.
I was thoroughly hooked on this "locked world" mystery and found it an enjoyable and intriguing story.
Very well plotted and told.

Wow, what a ride! First of all, I love the setting: "creepy crumbling English mansion full of secrets" is of course a Gothic staple, and one that I can rarely resist, and this novel with its cast or aristocratic guests and beleaguered staff also calls to mind a kind of Downton Abbey gone mad -- just imagine that every character is a Thomas or an O'Brien, and that they're all trying to murder each other. There are also shades of Clue here (secret passageways!) and of course, one would be remiss not to mention Groundhog Day. I loved that mix of allusions to nostalgic source material (whether they were intentional or not), which set the stage for what is probably the twistiest, most head-scratching build-up you're likely to read this year.
I was definitely a skeptical reader, and as of up to 75% done with the book, I didn't believe that the author would be able to satisfyingly tie everything up. I'm happy to say that I was wrong to doubt. To other readers who are having the same thought: stick with it. The payoff is worth it! What a gamble, though: it is asking a lot of the reader to follow you through a long-ish book (400+ pages) when you are piling up question after question after question with nary an answer in sight. But again: keep going! Everything will make sense in the end. Speaking of which, while I can't say that I found the ending to be particularly shocking, I don't think it needs to be -- it only needs to be satisfying, and it is.
I admittedly could not tell you whether or not all of the time-hopping stands up to intense logical scrutiny, but again, I don't think that particularly matters. The point is that it's really satisfying watching as the pieces (finally!!) start falling into place, and for that reason, I give this one a thumbs-up and my recommendation to mystery lovers. Although it is darker in tone and more violent than I expected (that body count!), it is not very gory, and while the language tends to be a bit more overwrought than is my preference (including a few metaphors that made me frown as a bit too try-hard), for the most part that stylistic choice is effective and evocative, with enough action happening that it doesn't bog down the movement of the story.
Just read it, okay? If nothing else, I can bet you won't read anything else like this for awhile!

I found this a very confusing over complicated book, and although I tried it on two different occasions I could not get into the book, and therefore did not finish it.

This book was so much weirder and BETTER than I thought it would be. I really didn't remember the summary when I started reading, but I loved every direction it took. Stuart Turton is excellent at writing the same character in different bodies and showing how our physical characteristics influence us. But this book is so much more. I loved it!

The Groundhog Day of murder mysteries and highly entertaining. Evelyn keeps dying and we need the who, why and how.
Very entertaining read, highly recommend

Evelyn Hardcastle keeps dying. But how? And why? And who did it? This book is at times confusing, but it's worth staying throug until the end as this whodunnit unravels and re-ravels time and time again.

This was a clever mystery with a Ground Hog Day element added to the mystery. I listened to the audiobook narrated by James Cameron Stuart who did a fine job reading this story. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to listen to this in long stretches and the book was on the lengthy side which made keeping up with the story, characters, and plot points difficult. I still found the book enjoyable to listen to and liked that there were some unexpected twists toward the latter part of the book. It is extremely well plotted and written. It’s hard to believe this is a debut. I would suggest you get a character list from bookcompanion.com to help keep up with the characters. If I could do it over again, I would like to keep notes of the information learned in each body to help me figure out the mystery, or maybe just listening in larger blocks of time I would have been able to keep up with everything better. I do think the book could have been reduced in size. It didn’t keep my attention as well because it just went on too long, too. I’d still recommend for mystery enthusiasts, especially if you are looking for a different kind of mystery. Even if you aren’t a big mystery reader, you still might want to consider. Everyone in my bookgroup enjoyed it.

I know this book was a huge hit with so many, but no matter how many times I tried to read it, I just couldn't get into it

I chose this book for a book club read. While I thought it was amazing my book club ladies did not like the jumping back and forth. I loved the different characters, I wondered how the author was keeping track of who was who and when and where. There was just so much to keep track of all the time, I sometimes have to reread parts because I felt like I missed something.
The ending!! it is not awful it is just underwhelming. A good book to get started into the mystery, easy enough read, entertaining but yes the ending was underwhelming.
Overall I love love loved and and look forward to reading more by Stuart Thurton in the future
