Lydia comes from humble beginnings living with her family in New Haven. Her life gets turned upside down when she is on a train to New York City to start her new life. Lydia is attacked by supernatural creatures she didn’t even realize existed. Now a supernatural being herself, she finds herself fleeing from a brutal captor and trying to keep her family intact. Will she be caught or will she succeed in escaping and restoring her family?
This sounded like a good story, mixing paranormal with historical fiction. Unfortunately I didn’t like it. The introduction was done well, so I had been hopeful, but starting right off the bat with Lydia’s reaction to the first vampire, it went downhill. From Lydia’s reaction (and somehow knowledge of something that isn’t supposed to exist) to her being bitten right in public, I couldn’t get very far.

I liked the plot and all the supernatural elements of this
book..I would of liked for it to have been like 2-3
different books, because there was soooo much to
tell and so many interesting characters with
different stories..

The writing is a bit too simplistic, and even after one who chapter in which days pass, I have no idea who the main character is or why she's working in a tavern. Consequently, I don't care about the handsome guy who comes to the tavern to see her. I do like the cover, but the one L spelling of "vermillion" throws me off.
