Last book, at least at the moment, in the Highland Isles stories and I'm drawn into the past.
Grace Ellington is a healer on her way to help her friend who is having a baby, she encounters Keir MacKinnon, Laird Rab MacKinnon's younger brother, in a snow storm and helps him, after he rescues her from some wolves, Keir is grateful and quickly realises she might be able to help his nephew, who has been struck by a mysterious illness and so he takes her against her will.
Does she cure his nephew?, does she forgive Keir?, OK, do they fall in love? Grab a copy and see.

From the beginning you'll be drawn in, there's a little bit of treachery and a lot of outspoken words from a fiesty Lassie

Grace Ellington is the daughter of the Earl of Somerset who prefers to live at a cottage on the edge of Aros village near her half-sister Ava. She’s volunteers to journey north to aid a friend in childbirth where she secretly hopes that she will find her own adventure. Her traveling companion is injured and she’s caught out in a blizzard where she’s rescued by Keir MacKinnon, the Devil of Dunakin, and the younger brother of the MacKinnon clan chief.
Keir is on his own mission to bring back the healer of Aros to save his nephews life when he’s injured rescuing Grace. He and Grace are caught in a cabin during the blizzard. The attraction is strong and sexual tension is sizzling, but reality comes knocking as his cousin Brodie brings them back to reality.
He finds she is a healer and decides to kidnap her instead. Sparks fly when he takes her against her will to his home, and Grace’s courage is put to the ultimate test. Grace realizes there’s more the Devil of Dunakin than he’s being an executioner. Grace is shocked by the way his people treat him. She tries to stay angry, but her heart goes out to this man she’s grown to trust with her life and possibly fallen in love with. This is a grand adventure for sure and you’ll fall in love with these two right from the start.
This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

I liked Grace when she was a secondary character in The Beast of Aros Castle & the author did not disappoint in giving Grace her own story & HEA. From the 1st, this character appealed with her rather irreverent sense of humour, and spark. Intelligent, spirited yet compassionate but gosh can she cuss! I fell (even more) in love with her when I read this (sheltering from a blizzard in a small abandoned hut with Keir and his horse Cogadh (war in Gaelic) that she prefers to call Little Warrior instead) when all the food she has are 2 oatcakes, dried venison and a crushed tart:

"She walked over to Cogadh and let him sniff her hand. Patiently waiting, she raised her palm, giving his horse ample time to examine her smell. Shifting slowly, his mighty warhorse leaned forward until his muzzle pressed into her palm. “There now,” she said softly and stroked down his muzzle. She help up a bit of broken off bannock for him to lap out of her hand. “You are a beauty, and I thank you.”

Keir watched in amazement as she bent her forehead to touch his horse’s."

Lost in a blizzard and faced with snarling wolves when she stumbles into their den, Grace is saved by Keir who himself in on his way to find the renown Maclean healer to save his sick nephew. Both Keir and his horse are hurt in the ensuing scuffle (not the wolves tho. Grace pleads with Keir to spare them since they were only reacting to her disturbance of their den. And they have pups!) and when Grace’s skills puts them both effectively back to health and Keir finds out that Mairi Maclean is heavily pregnant he takes the expedient path of kidnapping Grace back instead.

Brought up to be the defender of his clan, the “Devil of Dunakin”, a persona supposedly merciless, a fearless warrior who metes out punishment as his laird’s bequest; the man Keir is instead compassionate, but with a heavily burdened soul of the many he has killed, in protecting his clan. His reputation is fueled by stories as much as deed. Maybe even more as he finds ways with the help of the only person who knows the real man (his cousin Brodie) to craftily never hurt children or women regardless of what his laird decrees.

The only downside was a slightly over dramatic climax "the confrontation" part of the story which seemed a bit ridiculous. Also that Grace, an innocent, well brought up lady seemed a little too ...... uninhibited when it came to intimacy with Keir.

A definite keeper. This was a book I could not put down once I started.

I absolutely loved this story!!

When I saw that Grace was the heroine of this story, I had to wonder what McCollum would do with her. We met Grace in the first book of the series, The Beast of Aros Castle, and I wondered how the story would play out because Grace had been kind of a weak persona in that story having been poorly treated by her step-brother. But her time in Scotland had made her into much stronger person and I fell in love with her!! She definitely needed to have a strong personality to stand up to the Devil of Dunakin Castle!

Keir... he just broke my heart! You could tell that he didn't want his role as the Devil to be the only thing about him that people saw and it wasn't until Grace that someone did. I just loved the two of them together!!

I've really loved this series and I hope that McCollum is not done with it!!

Grace Ellington is sick of everyone believing she needs to marry. So, to escape their meddling she volunteers to go and help a friend in need. However, on her way to help her pregnant friend, Grace finds herself at the hands of Keir MacKinnon; a fierce man that -- it seems -- everyone is afraid of. Yet, she sees him differently and is determined to help him save his nephew. But when he's given a difficult order by his older brother, the MacKinnon clan chief, Grace decides to risk everything for the man she's falling in love with. Will Grace be able to help Keir make the right choice, or will they lose their chance of happy ever after because Keir always follows orders?

This is the first book I've read from this author, and I've got to say that it's a story that is highly entertaining, fast-paced and had me loving every interaction between the hero and heroine as they find themselves at odds for a short time because of what the hero does that makes the heroine dislike him. The way this story started had me sympathizing with the heroine, as she's frustrated by everyone having an opinion on her finding a man and getting married. Will she take notice of their opinions? However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine meet that had me fully hooked with this story, as the heroine can't believe what she does to the hero. How does she get herself into the situations that she does?

As for the dialogue, it was riveting and had me loving the main characters, even though the hero is deceitful at first because of what he does to the heroine that leads to her needing to help him instead of her friend. Furthermore, the heroine is a fighter in the way she's strong and brave in being able to handle the way people of the McKinnon Clan treat her. I also liked how she stood up for herself and did everything she could to help the hero, especially when he's handed a difficult task that won't be easy for him to be able to do. While the hero, he's not the ruthless and harsh man that everyone thinks he is. Instead, he's kind and caring most of the time, despite what he did to the heroine soon after they meet. I also liked that he would do anything for his family, even if his brother is making wrong decisions that could ultimately lead to disharmony in the Clan.

Overall, Ms. McCollum has delivered an exceptional read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was powerful, heady and convincing; the romance wonderful; and the ending had me enjoying how determined the heroine was to make certain the hero didn't make a wrong decision when it came to what he was asked to do. A decision that would haunt him if he followed his brother's orders. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up wonderfully, as the hero and heroine are so happy together and have ended up in a place where they belong and feel welcome. I would recommend The Devil of Dunakin Castle by Heather McCollum, if you enjoy Historical Romance, the opposites attract trope, or books by authors Eliza Knight, Emma Prince, Kathryn Le Veque and Julie Johnstone.

grace ellington is on her way to help mairi mcneil deliver her baby when she is waylaid by wolves, a blizzard, and a highland warrior. the days she spends alone in a cabin with keir mackinnon has her half in love with the devil of dunakin castle before she even knows what that means.

keir is his clan's enforcer. and he uses legend and tall tales and fear to keep people in line. but he's mostly trying to avoid adding to the crosses he bears on his body that mark all the people he's killed. he remembers every single one. and so, even though he thinks his soul is black and there is nothing worth redeeming in him. grace sees things so very differently.

she sees a man she should have every reason to hate, given that he's abducted her, and there's so much beauty and kindness and gentleness in his soul. the way he cares for her. the way he goes out of his way to care for others no matter what they might think of him, shows that he is more than the devil people name him.

and grace might just be the angel that saves him.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Wow, what an in-depth look at two interesting characters! I have not read any of the previous books so I do not know how Grace was portrayed in the previous book, but she struggles with her fears and wants so badly to be brave. Keir is the devil of his clan which means he is the one to keep order and fear instilled in the clan.

You see glimpses of the devil when he takes Grace without her permission and he is forced to carry out his brother's wishes and unfortunately, his brother is crazy and blood thirsty. Grace learns that while Keir must be the devil, his best friend, Brodie, cleans up after him and tries to "fix" things that the devil is forced to carry out.

An old adversary is at Dunakin and is stirring up trouble. The mysterious illness of Keir's nephew is poisoning and they must find out who is behind the plot and why. Again, Keir is put in a really bad situation that he can't see a way out of and it is brave Grace to the rescue! I loved that she had to conquer her fear to help Keir!

I love the "curse" that the devil will be pierced in the heart by an angel especially since Keir believed Grace was an angel when he met her! The story had a great HEA and I sure hope that we see more of Grace & Keir in a future book as well as Dara finding her HEA.

I loved this highlander read! Grace wants people to stop meddling and realize she doesn’t need to marry this very minute. She decides to escape by heading north to help with a childbirth. Keir is the younger brother to the clan chief and a warrior, Grace and Keir end up trapped in a blizzard together and with Keir realizes that Grace is a healer he kidnaps her in hopes she can heal is nephew. The story is fast-paced with lots of drama. The characters are great and the chemistry is intense and off the charts steamy. A loved it!

A hot and sexy Scottish Historical romance, if you like the type this is a book for you!!

Absolutely loved it!!!!

Grace Ellington the daughter of an English Earl has been living in Scotland since she ran away from England with her sister Ava. Always lacking confidence and courage she’s devoted her time in doing what she loves healing people, preferring to live at a cottage near the edge of the village.
Not wanting to rush in any courtship she wants what her sister and her friend Mairi have passion and love she won’t accept for anything less. So Grace is set in having an adventure going on her own to help with the birth of Mairi ‘s first baby with old Thomas as her escort. Maybe this way she can prove she’s not as weak as she thinks she’s viewed.

Kier MacKinnon a second son and brother to Rab MacKinnon the clan chief, is a feared warrior and labeled the Devil of Dunakin he’ll do anything to protect his clan and family. When his nephew and heir is struck with a mysterious illness his mission is to bring the famed healer Mairi MacLean from Aros. But instead he comes across Grace in a blizzard and she’s in danger of becoming lunch for a pack of wolves! Kier is wounded by the wolves and Grace heals him back to to his former intimidating self but instead of cowering in fear she stands her ground and is in fact a little bit awed and infatuation by him. Their chemistry is sizzling hot and you feel the heat. Grace isn’t like anyone he’s known, she’s saucy but innocent sometimes clumsy but oh so intoxicating he can’t keep his hands off her. Little by little Grace sees the man that he really is and not the legend he’s cultivated. She’s stolen his heart piece by piece until he wishes they could have a future together!

This is the fourth book and it can be read as a stand-alone. A wonderful romance with a roller coaster adventure a villain a blood thirsty mad man. A sexy highlander and a beautiful heroine with spunk and as much courage as a Highlander warrior!
And plenty of sexy times you’re sure to fall in love with Grace and Kier!

The Devil of Dunakin Castle by Heather McCollum
Highland Isles #4

Grace Ellington and Keir McKinnon meet when he saves her from voracious animals in the midst of a snowstorm. She returns the favor by healing his wounds from that battle only to have him kidnap her and take her to the Isle of Skye to heal his ill nephew. Keir is “The Devil of Dunakin Castle” raised to put fear into all for the heartless horrible deeds he visits on all but usually at the bequest of his chieftain – or perhaps he does what he does just because of who and what he is.

As Grace gets to know Keir she sees another side of him, cares for him and wants more from him that he believes is possible. As the two do their best to thwart evil, try to heal the ill will and people around them and find comfort in one another they both wonder if perhaps…just perhaps…there might be a future for them together.

This book made me feel, care and want. I loved the way the backstory of the characters unfolded. I came away wishing the book had not ended and wanting to know what happens to more than one of the characters in the future so am hopeful there will be another book soon in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Oh, what a fun, passion-filled book!

The Devil of Dunakin Castle is book four in Heather McCollum’s Highland Isles series. I’ve come to expect lots of passion and intrigue, danger and romance, and this book highlights Ms. McCollum’s talent for sweeping readers away into the rugged highlands. I highly recommend this book.

Grace Ellington wants to prove herself, and she decides to help her friend during childbirth. Along the way, however, a snow storm sweeps in and brings her right to the door of a scarred highlander. Keir MacKinnon was given the duty of finding a healer for his sick nephew, no matter the cost. When one falls right into his lap, he doesn’t know whether it’s a curse or a blessing.

These two were spectacular together. I could feel the sparks and was instantly enthralled into their story. So, right off the bat we have two different people trapped together. Grace, a gentle healer looking for adventure, and The Devil of Dunakin Castle who has seen enough bloodshed and adventure to last a lifetime.

And yet, Grace keeps the devil on his toes, so to speak. There were some parts where I had to grin ear-to-ear because...so cute! But then Grace would do something to bring the heat and then it would boil over, and dang...was this journey just completely epic and parts downright romantic.

That’s before another side plot opens up and everything gets so complicated. Keir has scars on top of scars. He's called the Devil for a reason, and the etchings on his soul present one problem after another. He doesn't know quite how to take the saucy, but sometimes angelic Grace who begs to differ.

The dialogue crackles, and the tension snaps like a rubber band. I think I held my breath throughout the entire book. Anyone who loves a good highland romance will definitely find something to satisfy here.

4.5 stars!

Grace Ellington is an English woman from the ton, but has left and moved to Scotland to be closer to her sister. She has been taught quite a lot in healing and now helps others with the skills she has learned. On her way to help a friend with her upcoming birth, she becomes lost in a blizzard and is rescued by Keir. She nurses him back to health following their ordeal, and decides to accompany him to try and improve his nephew’s failing health, but is annoyed when he absconds with her before she even has a chance to reveal her plan to him. Keir holds a fearful reputation, but she sees much more than that within him. While he is indeed in possession of some frightening skills, she can’t help but see all the good in him; having cast judgement prior to discovering his identity. When a dastardly plot is uncovered surrounding the mysterious illness within Dunakin castle, she vows to stay until the traitor is exposed. But another evil exists within the castle and only Grace has the power to save Keir from it. She’s going to save him, or die trying.

Keir MacKinnon (Devil of Dunakin Castle) has been bred for evil. The enforcer of Dunakin, his legend spreads far and wide, full of all of the nefarious deeds and deaths he is responsible for. Duty above all else. He used to believe that, but lately he has been questioning the motives behind the wicked actions he is ordered to carry out. He knows there is a better way, but he is torn with what he knows versus what he has done his entire life. Grace is something he never bargained for and sees him in a way no one has ever dared before. She also doesn’t fear him the way others do and they connect on a level he never imagined possible. The Devil doesn’t live happily ever after – a family would be a weakness. After determining the traitor within their walls, he has another punishment to deliver that is causing a war within himself. He knows his orders, but carrying out this particular command will destroy the man inside … Grace is his only hope – and even Keir doesn’t realize just how true that is.

This is my first book by Ms. McCollum and it definitely won’t be my last. I absolutely loved this book and the world within. Ms. McCollum took a somewhat familiar plot and then jumbled it all up to give it her own unique spin. I really enjoyed Grace and her uncommon departure from England; choosing instead to remain in Scotland with her sister and take up the craft of healing others. She’s a walking contradiction displaying fear in several instances, but strength in others. I don’t think even at the end, she realized just how strong she truly was. Keir is one of the most endearing characters I have come across in a while. He is the personification of strength – protector of all people and things Dunakin – enforcer of punishments handed down from their leader – a man who understand right and wrong versus necessity and survival – at war with his inner self, knowing his recent punishments have been unjust. He’s pretty much everything an alpha male should be. But his life isn’t his own; ruled by obligation and the decisions handed down from his older brother, Rabbie. Grace walking in to his life was exactly what he needed, having been questioning his role for some time, she helped him see things in a new light. Hard versus soft, They are seemingly opposite in every way, but for them, it works perfectly.

This book does a fabulous job of combining two people from different worlds with a bit of mystery and a crazy amount of sexual tension. Grace knows what she wants despite her lack of experience. She’s got a foul mouth on her and every deliciously dirty thing that spills from her lips only makes Keir want her more. She is truly one of a kind with her wanton desires and she isn’t afraid to act on them. Neither is Keir opposed to showing her more about them. Probably my only complaint was the lack of knowledge surrounding Grace’s decision to leave England. There is a bit mentioned about abuse from her brother, but it is never really discussed at length about what happened, or why she didn’t return following his death. Her fear of water is a direct result from him, but she never even discusses that with Keir besides a casual mention about staying away from it. I did quite enjoy watching each character grow and morph into the person they wanted to be. And Keir’s cousin, Brodie is also a brilliant addition to the cast of characters. I’d very much like to see him with his own story; especially given his new responsibilities. Overall, this is a wonderful historical romance with charming characters and an engaging plot that I am thrilled to have been able to read. If all of Ms. Mcollum’s stories are this delightful, then I just might have a new go-to author on my hands. Lovers of HR with a Highland twist are sure to be pleased by this tale of a brooding hero in desperate need of rescuing by his one true match.

The book begins with a blizzard to bring together our two main characters. I enjoyed the circumstances in which grace needs saving and in turn has to tend to her wounded warrior. Soon after that, it turns into a lustful tryst where the characters act like modern day people who happen to live in the 16th century. I was glad this portion was short lived as I enjoyed the dialogue between Grace and Keir. It was a mix of honest moments and witty banter that played well into overall story.

I found Grace to be too wanton for a maiden of those times. She’s inexperienced and grew up in a proper English household and yet she begs to be taken by a mere stranger (whom she’s known all of a week- most of which he was unconscious for). In all of the romantic scenes I found her character to be too much. I think the purpose was to show her as a progressive, independent young lady. She came across that way in other scenes just fine, but I felt these particular scenes weren’t in keeping with the era.

Keir was a great hero. Outwardly he is big and brawny, striking fear into all those around him. But Grace gets to see his heart and knows that “the devil” he’s made himself appear is really an act.

The plot is heavily centered around Grace and Keir falling for each other, but there are also moments of suspense and intrigue as well that help move the story along.

I’d be remiss not to mention Brodie, Keir’s cousin, second in command, and friend. He brings in a great balance of comedy and truth and I wouldn’t mind seeing him get his own book in this series.

I liked that this book could be read as a stand-alone, but think reading the previous books may give a greater enjoyment when some of the minor characters are mentioned.

A kind hero forced to play the beast, a heroine who is braver and stronger than she knows, and a romance that is by turns sweet and sensual makes The Devil of Dunakin Castle a wonderful read. Heather McCollum’s writing charms the heck out of me and I loved getting lost in Grace and Keir’s story.

Grace is a wholly endearing heroine. She’s the wallflower type who finally gets a chance to come into her own and she shines. In the beginning of the story, she’s looking for adventure. She gets more than she bargained for when she’s nearly mauled by wolves, rescued by Keir, then snowbound with an injured Keir, and then kidnapped by the man so that she may use her healing skills to heal his nephew (these are not spoilers as they all happen right at the beginning of the story). Grace faces all these obstacles with determined practicality and strong spirit, which I adored. She has more spine than she knows, which she’ll need if she wants to claim Keir for her own. Keir has been groomed since childhood to be the Devil of Dunakin Castle, the great and brutal defender of the MacKinnon clan. His reputation is larger-than-life, making him feared by all except his family and closest friend who know the truth: that Keir is a good, strong, fair man. My heart broke for Keir, who is forced to be an isolated monster and carry out punishments in the name of his increasingly bloodthirsty brother.

Grace is the first woman not cowed by Keir’s reputation. She sees the man beneath the mask and I absolutely loved that. The two of them have great chemistry from the start. They’re the kind of couple that fits perfectly. But with treachery afoot at Dunakin Castle and Keir’s sworn duty as the Devil in the way, the road to happily ever after isn’t an easy one. I was rooting for them every step of the way and their love story is an excellent mix of sweetness and steam.

The Devil of Dunakin Castle is the fourth book in Ms. McCollum’s Highland Isles series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. I have been reading this series out of order and have had no problems other than I desperately want to find the time to catch up because I love Ms. McCollum’s writing. If you’re a fan of Julie Garwood’s Highland romances, then you’re going to love The Devil of Dunakin Castle. It’s a spirited, delightful read with characters who will easily grab your heart.

The Devil of Dunakin Castle by Heather McCollum is Book Four in the "Highland Isles" series. This is the story of Grace Ellington and Keir MacKinnon. I have read all the books in this series (and LOVED THEM!) but feel this can easily be a standalone book.
Grace is the daughter of the Earl of Somerset and has inherited an Estate down in York England but she prefers to live at a cottage on the edge of Aros village near her half sister Ava. Grace has taken to learning to heal people and with that comes some independence. But between the village people, her sister and even the blacksmith Thomas thinks she should give in to her suitors like Gavin and marry. But Grace wants more than that. Grace is looking to overcome some of her fears and go on an adventure. Also Grace would like the passion she sees with her sister Ava and her husband along with Mairi and her husband. Grace decided to travel to help Mairi with the birth of her child. Thomas elected to escort her there but along the way he started getting sick and when they stopped in a Village, Grace went to get something to help Thomas she meets Keir. Keir is traveling to find the famous healer to help his sick nephew. Keir is the youngest brother of the Chief of the Mackinnon clan on the Isle of Skye. Keir is a strong man who brings discipline to his clan members and fear in his enemies. But he does stop to help Grace when she is trapped by wolves but get hurt in the end. So Grace helps to heal him which gets Keir to thinking that she could help his nephew and he will bring a healer to his nephew by any means possible.
I am so happy to read Grace and Keir story, it just added a little more love I have for this seires!

I loved Grace from book one. She up and left England, knowing it was for her own safety and she would be living her life her way.

And that's exactly what she's doing. So when she offered to help a friend - wife of a fellow laird - she stumbled upon our hero, Keir who saved her, but in turn, needed saving of his own.

I really liked the dynamic between them; the back-and-forth. You see, Grace was no lady and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. And when you have a hero as stubborn as Keir, you have to stand your ground.

As I said, Keir was stubborn so it took a little for them to get there, to fall in love with each other - the chemistry was there, the attraction between them could be felt - and I loved them together.

I don't want to give away spoilers or anything of the story. Read it if you're a fan of historical romance novels; strong heroines that may or may not cuss more than the average lady, and stubborn but hot Scots. Definitely read it if you like the above mentioned.

I agreed to read an early copy of this book through Netgalley and my rating is 4.5 stars.

This was the first book I have read by this author, but will definitely not be the last. This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone book. Englishwoman, Grace Ellington, has made a home for herself in Scotland. She has honed her skills and become proficient in defending herself but yearns for adventure. Everyone seems to be trying to get her married off, so to get away, she sets out to help a friend who is about to go into childbirth. On her way, she gets caught in a blizzard and ends up saving a a warrior, Keir MacKinnon. Keir , called the Devil of Dunakin, is known as one of the strongest warriors of his clan (or always has been until he meets Grace!) Grace is in trouble and becomes lost and in need of rescue but in trying to help her, Keir is knocked unconscious and Grace ends up saving him! They get to a deserted cabin nearby and Grace takes care of the warrior until he wakens. Needless to say, they become attracted to each other in such close quarters, how could they not? Keir ends up taking Grace to his home so that she can heal his deathly ill nephew. Along the way, they get to know each other and Grace becomes upset at how it seems his clan treats Keir Arriving at the castle, Grace is shocked to find out what is making the nephew ill. Secrets, mystery and intrigue are all woven together and a killer is on the loose. Can Grace and Keir find out what is happening before it is too late? The author is a master at making the characters come alive and keeping you turning the pages as fast as you can. The descriptions and emotions are deep and have you guessing until the end. This is a wonderful story that should not be missed!

I was a little worried when I found out that this was the fourth book in the series that I would be a little lost over things. Thankfully, it wasn't an issue at all. I ended up really enjoying this book. The characters were great and everything was believable. It was fun, funny, and definitely entertaining.

I loved how Keir and Grace were together and thought they made a good couple. From very different backgrounds and upbringings, they both managed to find joy with the other. With Keir's facade of the Devil of Dunakin Castle weighing heavily upon his shoulders he knows any sort of relationship with Grace is doomed. But Grace sees beyond what the rest of the people fear in him to who he is for real. And it is definitely no devil.

When Keir takes Grace with him to try and cure his nephew, they both try to fight their feelings. An impossible task. And when Grace quickly discovers what is killing the boy, it is up to the Devil to find the traitor before it's too late. I really liked how everything happened at the end. Except maybe how Grace frees Keir of his burden...it was a little corny but it worked.

Some day I would definitely like to read the first books of this series as well, and any that might come after.
