This was the second chance romance of Ethan and Lilah. Ethan left Lilah behind 8 years ago to pursue his hockey career. He has returned home. He is trying to help care for his father who just had a stroke. He has also been traded to his home team. Ethan sees this as a sign that he was sent home to rekindle things with Lilah. Lilah is coming off a failed marriage. She has never let go of Ethan’s family or Ethan. This contributes to her marriage falling apart.

I am sad to say that this fell flat for me. Lilah forgives Ethan too quickly. Then it seemed like they were falling into some unhealthy patterns. I stopped at 60%. I was losing interest in the characters and the story.

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

I sped through this one as I have started to learn I will do with Helena's books. (I'm still fairly new to her). I really liked Lilah as a main character and I will say that Ethan was likeable as well, even if sometimes I found him a little too much.

I love the idea of exploring the one that got away, the one that broke your heart all those years ago, so when Ethan is suddenly back and Minnesota and he and Lilah are thrown in each others paths again, this becomes quite the interesting story to watch unfold.

There are some great secondary characters in this one as well, including Carmen, Lilah's sister. I wouldn't mind getting a book about her in future to be honest.

I could totally understand Lilah's feelings and her wants, needs and fears. Helena wrote her so well. For the most part this is a fairly angst free book, and I sped through it nice and fast. There was a twist near the end that I really did not see coming at all, and that was dealt with really well also.

All in all, another fun and easy read from Ms Hunting.

4 second-chance stars!

Lilah is having the worst day ever. After being hit with one bad thing after another, she doesn’t think it could get any worse. But it can and it does. On her way out of the hospital at the end of her shift she learns that the man who has been an important father figure to her since she was young has suffered a stroke. Rushing to his beside she never anticipated running into his son. The boy who broke her heart. The boy who is no longer a boy.

"This is all too much. I’ve already taken too many punches to the heart today. And in this moment I feel like I’ve barely recovered from the punch he delivered eight years ago."

Ethan made a decision when he was a teenager that he has to live with. Now he’s back in town and wants to explain the situation. He finds himself drawn to her as he was in the past, his feelings still very real. He flips Lilah’s life upside down once again as he makes his way back into her world and it seems like the universe is trying to bring them together. Is there a second chance for these childhood sweethearts, or is the past too painful to overcome?

Second chance romances are some of my favorite stories and The Good Luck Charm has all the makings of a good one. This story has humor, heart, heat, a whole lot of depth, and is full of feels. The plot is well developed and I enjoyed the twists and turns the story takes. I also really loved the characters. Lilah and Ethan are real and relatable, and I enjoyed watching their story unfold.

Lilah was awesome. She was a hardworking, determined woman who refused to give up her dream even if she got a little lost along the way. My heart broke when hers did and I understood why she had to guard her heart, especially when Ethan walked back into her life.

"I fear my heart remembers loving him more than it remembers how he broke it."

Ethan was a wonderful hero but he was far from perfect. His choices in the past broke me. I wanted to scream at him but I felt his own heartache clear as day. He had to come a long way before he could fully grasp who Lilah really is to him.

"I know now why I never found anyone else who compared to her, why she never let me go, because she’s meant to be mine just as I’m meant to be hers."

This story is deeper than I expected and the emotion is solid. I felt it all. My heart hurt along with theirs and everything they went through. The heartache and regret are forefront but the love was there too, hidden behind the pain. It began as a young love but it was a real love. It is so clear that the connection was never severed even when their hearts were broken. They are intense, passionate, and downright HOT together.

I really enjoyed watching them open up as they reacquaint themselves with each other. They go on a journey and must find themselves before they can ever truly love without conditions. The character growth and self-discovery is well written and I loved watching them accept the difficult realizations that come to light as they grew closer.

"Past and present are merging, and I don’t know how to separate them."

I felt the insecurities and vulnerabilities as they accept what’s best for them as a couple and individually. Learning to balance everything in their lives, I could imagine the story playing out in my mind as I turned the pages. The issues that arise are believable and I feel the resolution was well done. There was no added angst for the sake of angst and I appreciated it.

Overall, The Good Luck Charm was an entertaining, emotional read that will make you believe in second chances, and I loved it.

The Good Luck Charm is a heartwarming second chance romance for one very hot professional hockey player and the sweet down-home girl "that got away". Ethan Kane has had great success as a pro hockey player but when an unexpected incident sends him back to his hometown he comes face to face with his old flame Lilah. Lilah has done everything she can to forget about Ethan but now that he is back she can't seem to stay away from him. When the connection between the two reignites, Ethan will do whatever it takes to keep Lilah in his life and this time he is never letting her go.

Told in multiple POV, The Good Luck Charm is a sweet romance with smoking hot passion. The connection between these two ran deep as they had grown up together. I felt the separation from their past to be a realistic snapshot of what many young lovers face. I found the journey of these two characters to be truly heartfelt. I was glad that Ethan didn't waste any time going after Lilah. And yet, I was even more pleased that Lilah was smart and wanted to ensure that she didn't quit on her own dreams in the process.

Overall, The Good Luck Charm would appeal to readers who love a second chance romance with a perfect blend of sweet and seductive. Ms. Hunting is one of my absolute go-to authors and I am always excited to read her work.

Im a huge fan of Helena Hunting and was excited to read Good Luck Charm.

I was hooked on this story as soon as I dived in. I was choked up with emotions one minute and then laughing my ass of the next and this was all within the first 20%

Before reading this book, I was in a hugeeee reading slump but I knew if any book could get me out of it, it would be this one.

Now, youre probably sitting there wondering why I rated this book a 3.25 when I seemed to haved loved it right from the start. I get the confusion cause I felt it myself. I had mixed feelings after reading it cause although I enjoyed this book, I had a few issues with it.

This is a second chance romance so I was anticipating some sort of drama/obstacles in the way before they finally got together but thats not how it played out. Even though DJ/Lilah was so hurt and upset when she ran into Ethan, she easily took him back as if the past 8 years didnt happen. I was seriously waiting for the shoe to drop cause it was just too damn easy.
Towards the end of the book they finally had problems which is what I was looking for but......., you know the saying "Careful what you wish for"? Yeah. It was the worst! The drama between the two had me really annoyed!!! Lilah lost herself in her relationship and Ethan was so damn selfish.

Towards the end the author allows you to understand why Lilah acted the way she did but this chick *points at self* was just over it by that time.

I will say that I really enjoyed the ending of this book. This was definitely a fluffy read and Im a fan of fluff but this book sadly wasnt a 5 star read for me. I felt like this book was a lil different than her other books but that might just be me🙈 Im also in the minority with my feelings.

Lilah had no idea the bad day she was having was going to lead to surprising life changes. She was living a single, controlled, orderly life and working on achieving some new goals for herself, and BOOM the rug is pulled out from under her and her past is slapping her in the face....in the form of a big, brawny NHL player, Ethan Kase. He was her best friend and first love that broke her heart eight years ago. She is still hurt, angry, and dealing with repercussions from the loss of him.

Ethan's career has been on a downspin and he is now home in Minnesota and starting with a new team. He is also dealing with family issues. And now he is facing the woman he loved and left.

Neither really got over the other, but there is a lot of anger, hurt, and misconceptions between them. But now they will be in the same place again and Ethan is ready to take another shot. But he will have to break through her walls, her fears, and make up for his past mistakes. He's an idealist and also believes in superstitions, rituals, and fate. And his life seems to be on an upswing now that she is back in it. He is also persistent and overwhelmingly sweet, romantic, and passionate.

She is usually grounded and in control, but Ethan is an all consuming distraction. And she still has deep seated fears and issues. She needs balance, boundaries, and to find her sense of self. But with Ethan beginning to infiltrate her life again, will she lose herself and give up her dreams again? Are they meant to be, or will she lose again?

This is a sweet, engaging, sexy, second-chance romance about the importance of family, passion, priorities, and unconditional love. These characters had some issues to work through and healing that was long overdue. But they also needed to figure out if and how they could fit back into each other's lives after a lengthy separation and plenty of life changes. I really liked both of these characters and could understand where they were coming from. They had amazing chemistry and a strong connection. It was easy to get swept away with the familiarity and history. But they were also both on their own personal journeys trying to gain confidence in their own abilities, and figure out what they wanted and needed for their own happiness and futures. Sometimes timing is everything. But sometimes no matter how good everything is, there still needs to be compromise. And sometimes compromise is not that easy.

I loved the side characters of Carmen, Emery, and Dr. Lovely. I would enjoy seeing spin offs with these characters. And of course, Ethan is part of a hockey team so that opens up some possibilities too.

The Good Luck Charm is a second chance romance featuring hunky professional NHL star and a freshly divorced nurse. Ethan has to clean up his game to avoid losing his career, Lilah is beginning a rigourous master's degree program. Neither of them can afford to have any distractions.

Ethan and Lilah were the golden couple of their youth. Their love was all consuming and their happiness was palpable. But when success changes their life plans, they go separate ways with broken hearts. When family responsibilities bring them back into the same town, Lilah holds Ethan at arm's length. Ethan knows that he lives his best life with Lilah around. Can he win back his good luck charm?

This story is charming, if not extremely tropey. Not that it's a bad thing! Fans of second chance romance and sports romance will love this little gem. Even though it's based on a trope, it does have a strong message about not losing yourself or losing sight of your personal goals when love finds you.

This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

THE GOOD LUCK CHARM by Helen Hunting is a contemporary, adult, erotic, hockey romance story line focusing on twenty-seven year old, professional hockey player Ethan Kane, and twenty-six year old, practical nurse Lilah Smith.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Lilah and Ethan) THE GOOD LUCK CHARM focusing on the second chance relationship between twenty-seven year old, professional hockey player Ethan Kane, and twenty-six year old, practical nurse Lilah Smith. Eight years earlier, high school sweethearts Ethan and Lilah were making plans for the future when Ethan’s chance to play professional hockey found our hero walking out of Lilah’s life without looking back. Fast forward to present day wherein Ethan’s trade to his home-state of Minnesota brings with it too many memories of the past, and reminders of what was and what could have been for our story line heroine. With his dad’s recent stroke Ethan would have to face the reality of having lost the woman he has always loved as Lilah remains a permanent fixture in his parents’ lives. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Lilah and Ethan, and the potential fallout as Ethan’s need for Lilah becomes overwhelming leaving our heroine feeling smothered and lost at the same time.

Lilah’s heart was destroyed the day Ethan walked out of her life with nothing more than a phone call saying he needed to focus on his hockey career. Losing the only man she would ever love Lilah spent the next eight years trying to find what she had lost only to come to the realization that nothing and no one could ever replace her broken heart. Ethan Kane has never stopped loving Lilah Smith, and his actions eight years earlier have been a heavy burden throughout his career. Having a second chance at love finds our hero trying to regain everything he has lost but in doing so begins to push away the woman he loves-Lilah will, once again, unknowingly sabotage her future for the man that could potentially destroy her heart.

The relationship between Lilah and Ethan is one of second chances; a palpable sexual attraction that has never diminished; a heart breaking and emotional reunion that begins to pick at a scar that had yet to heal. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and seductive, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Lilah’s sister Carmen; Ethan’s parents Martin and Jeannie Kane; Dr.Noah Lovely; and college student Emery Dove-Smith. I am hoping for a future story between Noah and Carmen.

THE GOOD LUCK CHARM is a story of sacrifice and acceptance; family and friendships; second chances and a happily ever after. The premise is emotional and sensitive; the romance is spirited and provocative; the characters are flirty but wounded. THE GOOD LUCK CHARM is a character driven, realistic and passionate story.

Second chance romance is one of my go-to tropes, and Helena Hunting's The Good Luck Charm ticked off all my boxes. This story is chock full of sweet, sexy, and fun. Lilah and Ethan many have broken up, but it's never really been over for the two of them. It's crystal clear when they find themselves face to face after eight years. A family crisis might have reunited them, but it was their chemistry that took center stage. The ease of their coming together was something I loved about this story. No drama, no vindictive exes. Just two people who loved each other as kids, trying to figure out how to love each other as adults.

That's not to say Ethan and Lilah didn't have their problems, because they were full of them. Separately and together. Ethan was selfish. Once he had Lilah back, he was desperate to keep her there and did so. He was, at times, suffocating, and I found myself wanting to shake him and tell him to cut it out. Lilah was so desperate to keep Ethan this time around and was continually putting his needs in front of her own. They had an eight-year gap to deal with, and neither of them handled it well. It was a vicious cycle, and they could have been doomed to fail. But it was refreshing to read about two flawed characters, and I enjoyed following them as they navigated their relationship in adulthood.

The Good Luck Charm had a few twists I didn't see coming and was more than just a love story between a man and a woman. It was about family too, and atonement. This is a great book to sit on the beach or curl on up the couch with.

I love a sports romance and when you throw in second chance romance as well, this girl has to have it! Helena Hunting captivated me from very beginning. Lilah and Ethan’s chemistry and pull towards each other was perfection.

Lilah and Ethan were high school sweethearts and so in love. It all changed when Ethan left to pursue his professional hockey career. Lilah stayed behind close to Ethan’s family. Ethan has returned after being gone for 8 years. The pull between these two is still strong but Lilah is hesitant to trust him again.

I loved these characters and their story. This was a fun quick read that I couldn’t put down. If your looking for a fast paced second chance romance full of emotion and steam, look no further. I highly recommend this book.

Man, I love a good second-chance romance! Especially one that requires some major groveling and lots and lots of work toward making a go of it again! And wow, does The Good Luck Charm deliver on all fronts!

Lilah is having a terrible, no good, very bad day—and that day gets worse when she lays her eyes on one Ethan Kaye after eight years. Eight long years. Eight years to “get over” the heart break that Ethan dispensed when he left to focus on hockey. Sure, Lilah’s moved on, really and truly—well, maybe her head moved on, her heart is another matter.

Ethan’s been traded to Minnesota. It’s his chance to get the magic back—back in his hockey play and hopefully in his relationship status. It’s the second chance he never expected, and he’d love nothing more than to have Lilah back in his arms again.

But it’s not going to be easy—they have some massive issues to tackle. Especially when it seems that Ethan’s superstitions have taken over and Lilah is wrapped up in them.

Ethan is such a man, so truly oblivious to the havoc that he wreaked! But, damn it, he was just too damn loveable not to forgive. Oh, and hot AF too, so that’s an added bonus. And Lilah, wow. I loved how she had a bit of a “come to Jesus” moment, and that she stood her ground. Finally putting herself first. And that Ethan finally realized that Lilah was more important to him than anything.

The Good Luck Charm is a bit of slow-burn, filled with angst, and lots and lots of love.

This was a very cute, but very predictable second chance sports romance. It's a sweet story of two high school sweethearts finding their way back to each other after being broken up for eight years. The dialogue will having you laughing, and the tension combined with hockey references is sure to please sports fans.

Say hello to another swoon worthy romance! Helena brings back the heavy in the best way with The Good Luck Charm. A young romance ended too soon. A woman with a second broken heart and a man with a second chance.

Ethan regrets the decision he made years ago to leave his first love behind. But its a tough choice for a young man between what if and what could be. He choose his dream career and left Lilah wondering just where they went wrong. Now he's back in town and it could be for good. He has to put some demons to rest before his life takes another turn downhill. Lilah's had the worst day filled with divorce papers, a second father's medical scare and now her first love is back in town. There's too much history for them to get along now. But Ethan's got more than just reconciliation on his mind.

The light-hearted humor and wit that any HH fan knows is definitely present in TGLC. Ethan and Lilah, whether they're fighting or reminiscing, have the ability to outwit and go head to head with one another. But Hunting takes us back to her original romance feels of heavy story lines. These two have so much to get through from their past. Ethan's betrayal towards Lilah is built in layers of young ignorance. As Ethan tries to win back Lilah he unknowingly slips back into his old habits of depending on "rituals" to win games. Soon Lilah feels as if she's not just a woman to Ethan any more, but instead that he is with her out of habit in order to further the career he originally left her for.

Prepare for love and heartbreak with this new romance. Lilah has to fight tooth and nail to decide what she truly wants and deserves. A failed marriage after a broken heart and a family that had abandoned her and her sister left her with a rough start. There's solace to Lilah's work but it too holds secrets. Ethan has to fight for the future he wants, be it Lilah or hockey. With twists and turns and hope for the future this romance has got it all. Fun, sex, laughter, heartbreak, sadness, and the reality of true love.

Helena Hunting is synonymous of guaranteed delicious moments with her luscious books and light reading and with The Good Luck Charm was no different, starting with this wonderfully attractive cover that conveys the atmosphere of the book very well.
Lilah is a lonely and needy girl who is focused on her career as a nurse, on a bad day, when everything is going wrong, she finds herself again with her past and discovers that she was not prepared to face the love of her life after years without see him.
Ethan and Lilah had one of those perfect teenage love that makes everyone sigh, always glued together, they had plans for the future until after a bad decision because of his career in hockey and from a distance Ethan decided to abandon his loved one in the worst possible way. Now he is back and determined to regain her at all costs because he knows that a love like theirs can not die and that Lilah is his only luck charm.
When we read the synopsis and the details that I spoke up, we ends up thinking that it is with another book of hockey star wanting a second chance to have done foolish decision in the past ....but…..that is not what I see reading.
Helena Hunting got me through this totally unpredictable plot, the way she led the maturation of Lilah and the way she became strong was striking and beautiful to accompany . I never imagined that she would react the way she reacted and that even when she reached the end she would come across the whole turn-around that happened.
I liked everything very much, even though I found an exaggeratedly sticky male character who even got me bored sometimes but….. I loved the way that he showed to Lilah that he also grew up. So cute !
5/5 stars

The Good Luck Charm is a complete standalone and while it does involve hockey, Helena did a great job making sure to make this story completely separate from what we have seen with the Pucked series.

This book is slightly heavier than what we usually see from her, but there are some bits of humor sprinkled in at the right times. I find second chance romances interesting because I enjoy seeing how the characters run into one another again, how the past ties into the future, and what makes this go around better. And with strong dialogue and character depth Helena covers all of that in a very well thought

Ethan is piecing back together his career with one last chance back in his hometown. He left home eight years ago to pursue and focus on his hockey career, leaving behind his best friend and girlfriend, DJ (Lilah). He has struggled in several aspects of his life since then and hopes that the return home will help him put the pieces back.

Lilah has made some changes in her life and has no interest in going back to the woman she was when Ethan left town. When he returns, she fears that he wants her to be who she used to be rather than who she is, that he is using her as his good luck charm. Ethan’s superstitions are something fierce, as is typical of many sports stars.

These two had fantastic chemistry. From the beginning it just felt like they belonged together, like they couldn’t stay away. Lilah and Ethan have what I love in a good second chance romance: the history, the pull, and the spark that lingers even after so much time and distance. Even though they had been apart for so long, the spark that grew from their childhood friendship did not dim.

This was a lighthearted, fun second chance romance. I usually expect a little further down the comedy side of the rom-com scale from Helena, but this was such a great change of pace. They had a lot to deal with, pain, hurt and misunderstanding as they navigated not only what they had in the past but what they could have if they can move beyond.

I received this book for free from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Good Luck Charm is Helena Hunting's newest standalone romance. I'm a huge fan of Helena's and I don’t even read her synopsis' anymore, I just get the book. I always know I'm going to get all the feels when I read one of her books. The writing is top notch, the characters well developed and witty and the storyline addicting. The Good Luck Charm delivered all of that plus extra heat and a little more angst. Ethan left home eight years ago. He was chasing his dream of playing professional hockey, but he left the love of his life. Now he's back home and he wants her back. Lilah moved on with her life. She has a job she loves, friends and a sister who she's close with. Even a nice house and a dog. She doesn't want to hear Ethan's excuses. She's still so mad at him for the way he ended things. He's not going to be deterred though. He's going to romance her and win her back. Lilah can't stop the way she feels about Ethan. They have so much history and it's not all bad. Her body is way ahead of her mind though. She tries to fight it, but fighting Ethan is worthless. He's the love of her life. But when he starts to need her more and more and she starts to lose herself again, she has to do something. Is she just Ethan's good luck charm? Is he using her? I really enjoyed the relationship between Ethan and Lilah. They are both hard working, determined and a little crazy! I love the relationship she has with her sister and Ethan's parents added in another layer which I really loved. Second chance romances are my favorite and this one made me laugh, cry, get mad, swoon and had me saying "I didn't see that coming!" Looking forward to more from Helena!!

"Nothing you say is going to change the past."
"It could change the future, though."

"This isn't a hockey game, Ethan. It's a kiss, which will hopefully also lead to some scoring."

"You're a lifesaver. Pineapple flavored."
"I prefer the green-apple ones."

The Good Luck Charm is too good to pass up. I adore the worlds that Helena creates everything from the humor to the heartaches, to the sometimes quirky characters she brings to life. I was so excited to read this book because, well, I love when Ms. Hunting writes hockey books. The Good Luck Charm was easily my favorite book Ms. Hunting has written, this was a second chance romance that is everything you would expect to find in one and so much more.

Lilah and Ethan were once everything to each other, starting as friends before becoming a couple. When everything fell apart Lilah was left with a broken heart. When Ethan returns she goes not to let him hurt her again. As these two navigate a new relationship that's just as rocky as it is tender, they have to trust that each have grown up and changed enough to be able to handle a second chance. Of course that chance doesn't come without it's own pain and heartbreak.

Overall an amazing read that you aren't going to want to miss!

I loved this story. Good Luck Charm is a sweet, and heart warming second chance romance that will have give you all the feels.

Ethan has returned home to do play for his home town NHL team. More importantly however is that retaining home means reconnecting with his ex Delilah who he left broken hearted.

I have to say that I immediately connected with Delilah and my heart went out to her. Ethan is determined to make her fall in love with him again. But did she ever really stop?

This storyline is captivating and I found myself immersed in these two. Anger, forgiveness, and even doubt play a huge part in this story and it impossible not to get wrapped up in all of it. Throw in an unexpected twist which only adds to this already captivating read and I’m in love.

This may just be my fav read from Helena Hunting yet. A second chance full of ups and downs that will have you glued to the pages.

You know when you never knew you needed something in your life, and then once you’ve experienced it you don’t know how you managed to live without it? Well that’s pretty much where I’m at with hockey player centered romances, thanks to The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting. Two days after finishing and I still can’t stop thinking about it, despite not knowing a single thing about hockey or having ever really read this genre of romance novel before.

The Good Luck Charm has a second chance romance at its center, following Lilah, a nurse in her mid twenties who is confronted with the return of a very significant ex several years after their traumatic break up. I love the drama and tension that comes with a hate to love and second chance romance, and it’s not one that I’m exposed to often reading so much YA, where most of the characters are in their mid to late teens and haven’t had time to cultivate super meaningful exes yet. I loved seeing the ice slowly thaw between Ethan and Lilah, and seeing how they both gravitated back toward each other and how threads from their teenage romance were woven into their adult relationship.

Another positive point for me as a reader in The Good Luck Charm is that there isn’t the stereotypical drama you’d expect from a romance novel (jealousy, infidelity, miscommunication, etc.) The conflict lies more around setting defined boundaries in a relationship and maintaining a healthy sense of self, which isn’t something I’ve really seen dealt with in a romance novel before. Though toward the end I was getting frustrated with some of the characters’ actions and non-actions, it approached the idea of conflict in a relationship in a different way. I also enjoyed that while Ethan is a professional hockey player so obviously his profession is exciting and glamorous, there was still a lot of focus on Lilah’s day job as a nurse and what her day to day looked like as well as her future career aspirations of become a nurse practitioner. I liked the balance of the surreal profession with a more normal (though important) one, and liked that there wasn’t a lot of drama involved in Ethan sort of being a celebrity and Lilah being more of a normal person.

While I immensely enjoyed my reading experience, there were a few things that weren’t my favorite. I think Lilah and Ethan getting together could have taken a bit longer, as they were pretty solidly together by the halfway mark of the book. There was also some added drama and family revelations for Lilah toward the end that felt a little too hasty, and I think there wasn’t enough time to really explore her family’s back story to make the reveal super significant.

Overall: I really enjoyed my foray into the sports/contemporary/romance novel world, and am definitely planning on reading Hunting’s Pucked series (I believe some of the characters in that series are briefly mentioned here!)
