Maggie wakes up in hospital. She has been in a coma but that's not the worst news. Her daughter, Elspeth, is dead - killed in a car accident in Maggie's care - whilst her husband, Sean, has disappeared. Maggie can't remember exactly what happened but she knows she didn't kill her own daughter. Doesn't she?

I went into this thinking it was probably going to be a fairly generic thriller, but it turned out to be much better than that. The main character was fairly sympathetic, and the twists and turns of the plot kept my attention. I did, however, think that the ending wandered off into more unlikely territory and this spoiled it a little for me. Overall though it was an intriguing thriller that kept my attention.

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Penguin Books (UK), for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is the sort of book I enjoy reading and rapidly forget!
It is a perfectly good thriller. The set-up and premise is a little strained but it is a well structured, page-turner of a thriller. Decent, competent writing. Interesting characters although I found the protagonist a little irritating at times - but that may say more about my frayed nerved than anything else!

If you're looking for a decent read for a couple of nights, this will do the job!

When Maggie awakes from a coma in hospital and is told that her beloved daughter Elspeth is dead she is utterly devastated and totally disturbed by her lack of memory of the incident that caused her death. With her husband nowhere to be found, no home and a head full of questions, Maggie desperately tries to pull the shattered pieces of her life back together. For some reason she cannot explain she is sure her daughter is alive and will do anything to prove that she is.

With some great twists and stacks of intrigue throughout this is a great read for anyone who enjoys a novel that will keep them guessing and wondering until the end.

My thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of #TheDayoftheAccident in return for an honest review.

Day of the Accident by Nuala Ellwood is a great book that kept me hooked from the word go and I devoured in 3 days!
From the moment I started reading all I wanted to do was get to the end to find out what happened to Maggie and who is writing the mysterious letters.
The ending was a real surprise, you won’t guess it!

Day of The Accident follows the aftermath of a tragic accident in which Maggie loses her daughter Freya. Injured herself she wakes from a coma to find out that the funeral has already happened and that her husband Sean has vanished. Struggling to deal with the emotional and physical she becomes more and more convinced, despite all the evidence, that her daughter is still out there, somewhere.

Well, that was emotional! A quiet shift at work had me read this in three hours flat - I just couldn't put it down. As I read I became more and more worried it would have a ridiculous ending. I honestly couldn't see where it was heading. But when I realised - relief! No ridiculous ending here. Just a fantastic book all round, enthralling and emotional, I couldn't recommend it enough to anyone that likes a good thriller with a twist in the tale.

A compelling psychological thriller.. After waking from a coma, Maggie is told her daughter is dead after the car she was driving plunged into a river. Under suspicion from the police, Maggie remembers nothing and her husband Sean has disappeared. An emotional gripping page turner.

A great thriller. Super entertaining with great twists. Less character development than I was expecting but a great read nonetheless.

I read this book in 2 sittings on holiday. I was hooked from the prologue curious as to what Maggie, our lead character could be admitting guilt for when the coroner had ruled there was no foul play in her daughter’s death.

When Maggie wakes from a coma, she learns her daughter is dead after being trapped in a sinking car, and her husband has disappeared unable to forgive her for her role in the tragedy. As the story progresses, The chapters where Maggie is trying to piece together what is left of her life are interspersed with letters signed off be her daughter. Is a cruel trick being played on her? Or is her daughter alive somewhere and being kept from her?

I really enjoyed this book, the cliffhangers and twists came at just the right moments to keep me hooked. I did however find the climax of the story to be quite difficult to accept as something that could really have happened without anyone knowing the truth sooner. If the ending had been more believable this may have been a 5 star read!

I received an e-ARC of this book from the publishers via exchange for an honest review.

First the good stuff: this book is a page turner. The story gallops along and I wasn't sure until the end how it would unfold. So, there's a good plot and clear, readable prose. I read it quickly to the end, often when I should have been sleeping. If I'm being picky, though, I didn't find it a particularly memorable book, and that is mostly because I did not believe 100% in the characters. In particular, the voice of the letters that are interspersed amongst the 'Maggie' chapters grated on me. Who actually signs themselves off 'your lovely daughter'?? But it wasn't just that - there were too many things about that character that I didn't believe. I therefore found myself a bit unmoved at the novel's climax, the (slightly cartoony in my opinion) denouement where the antagonists' motives are laid bare. Still, it was very entertaining and passed many enjoyable hours.

I LOVED this book, gripped from the beginning by the strange events and empathising with Maggie’s pain and confusion. This plot is intricate and gradually reveals the back story through memories and triggers. Twists aplenty, some you can see coming but others catch you totally unawares until the last minute. I could feel frustrated with people’s behaviours and shared the rightful distrust of Maggie.

Maggie Allan wakes from a coma, to be told that her daughter Elspeth is dead and she was responsible. Not only that, but her husband Sean identified Elspeth’s body and hasn’t been seen since her funeral. With no clear memory of that day, alone and confused Maggie needs learn the truth of what happened on that tragic day.

A compelling prologue in a courtroom starts this novel off really well. I read this because I had really like My Sister’s Bones and Nuala Ellwood writes very well. I didn’t really warm to Maggie, and that was an issue for me, because who wouldn’t warm to a woman struggling to piece together her fragmented memory in order to find out what happened the day is alleged to have drowned her own daughter?

As pieces of her memory begin to come back Ellwood will have you second guessing the outcome all the time, but it never goes quite the way you expect, and that’s what keeps you reading. As if the situation were not sufficiently emotional, there are also letters written by a child to their mummy which wring the heart out just a little bit more.

I found, though that the plot required just a little more suspension of disbelief than I like to give, and that did slightly take the shine off for me.

This was intense and a little disturbing and really good. Fast paced and very interesting, I couldn't stop reading and read this whole book in one sitting. There was so much going wrong in Maggie's life and also in Julia's that it was hard to read sometimes. The letters written by a child, hurting so much, made me want to cry. And, almost till the end, I hoped that there would be a happy ending for Maggie and Elspeth. And there was a ray of sunshine in the end, but just not like I expected. Really great read!

The ending was a little odd and I felt a bit rushed.
All in all a good book.

I received a digital arc of #TheDayOfTheAccident from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It quickly becomes apparent that there is a dark secret from Maggie's past! What is it? What happened the day of the accident? Where were they going and why? Why was her daughter locked inside the car? And where has Sean gone?

I really liked the fragments of Maggie's memories that interspersed the story to give a fuller picture of what happened that day. The letters made for interesting reading too and throw a different light on everything.

I really liked the twist at the end. When everything is revealed and all your questions are answered, it makes you gasp! I hadn't seen it coming. Really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. Can't really say much else without spoiling it! Will recommend to others and will read more of this authors work in the future.

I loved how we got little flashbacks into Maggie’s past opening up her memories I felt so so sorry for her past and her present ...I fell in love with her character and it did keep me guessing and I felt a lot of what ifs...
I will definitely be seeking out this author in future.
5 star read.
