From my blog: Always With a Book:

This is the third book I've read by Kate Moretti and I have to say...I'm a fan! She can sure write a twisted, thrilling story that leaves you turning those pages, not sure where it is all heading.

I love a good serial killer story, and this one gives us a slight twist on that by having our main protagonist be the daughter of a famous serial killer. Edie Beckett's mom killed six women when Edie was a child. Luckily for Edie, her name was kept out of the media and now, as an adult, she is living her own life, except for one slight little thing...she has this unhealthy obsession with the families of her mom's victims. It's all good until one ends up dead...and she becomes a suspect.

I liked the way this story was told. Most of the story is from Edie's point of view, though there are also chapters from Gil Brandt's point of view, the detective on the case from when Lilith, Edie's mom was first arrested. He is still a detective and helps Edie when she is a suspect in the current murder. And then there are excerpts from the unauthorized biography about Edie's mom...I love the whole concept of a book within a book. This is where we really learn a lot about Lilith and the crimes she committed.

Edie is such an interesting character. She is complex and yet there is something about her that makes you wonder if she is completely reliable. You want to trust her but then some of her choices make you wonder if you should. And yet when you look at her family history, you can't help feel bad for her. She makes a compelling character either way and you do end up wanting to root for her...you just can't help it.

This book is cleverly crafted and suspenseful. The twists and turns keep you guessing as to where it is heading and let me tell you - I certainly did not see that ending coming! It's such a good sign when I am totally floored like that. I definitely recommend picking this one up, especially if you enjoy darker, thrilling reads, without all the gore.

“She could charm the pants off a snake. She looked at you like you were the only one in the room. Like you were interesting. She was just so goddamn interested in everything you had to say. In my whole life, no one has ever thought I was that funny, that smart. She made you feel like a hero, you know? She was damaged, too, you could tell. That combination, though? Beautiful, damaged, and intensely interested? It could lure anyone. People forget that, when they talk about her. That she was pretty.”

Thriller fans, this one’s for you! Smart, fast-paced and engaging, ‘In Her Bones’ had me guessing until the very end. If ever a book would make a great movie, this is the one!

This book examines the families that a psychotic killer has left behind. Both the victims’ families and the family of a convicted killer have suffered in many different ways. There is also a book-within-a-book here, as Edie, the daughter of the killer, struggles to find out which anonymous author could have written such a story about her family.

Lilith Wade was convicted for a series of vicious murders of six women. She left behind not only the grieving families of the victims but her own two children, Edie and Dylan, who had grown up with a psychotic mother and a mostly-absent father. Edie is now an adult and shuns the spotlight. But she is obsessed with the victims’ families and has developed skills at talking them online.

“Your life is more open than you think. You think you’re safe. You have neighborhood watches and room-darkening drapes, password-protected computers, alarm systems, and garage codes that are absolutely not your firstborn’s birthday. Even with all that, it’s practically there for the taking. Anyone can find out anything about you, and sometimes, if they ask the right way, you’ll just tell them.”

A recovering addict, Edie has her own secrets to hide. But when one of the family members of the victims is murdered, Edie becomes the prime suspect. She must race against time to find the real killer and uncover long-buried truths from her past. On her trail is the smart police detective who helped put her mother away and Edie must stay one step ahead of him.

Is it possible that Edie committed the murder herself? She was blackout drunk. Who is the real killer? I loved Edie from the very beginning and felt a huge sense of empathy towards her. Her past slowly reveals itself and the story took many poignant turns.

“There are no coincidences. Lilith said this, mostly in the throes of paranoia when she believed the FBI was monitoring her telephone lines. It can be disarming how many of my major life moments are internally narrated by my mother.”

I really enjoyed this thriller and was totally surprised at the conclusion. I devoured this story in one sitting and was completely taken aback by the clever twists and turns. I love Kate Moratti’s style and can’t wait to see what she dreams up next.

“Everyone ignores what they know to be true, when the truth is inconvenient.”

In Her Bones begins with a bang and the action and mystery don't let up until the very end. This novel was so different from most suspense/mystery novels because the main narrator is the suspect of the crime. I loved that the main character wasn't the detective. Edie was such an interesting character and I enjoyed following her logic and seeing how her brain worked.

This novel is a little darker than Moretti's previous works, but I really enjoyed the pace and the overall feel of the novel. It kept me on my toes and had me constantly guessing until the end. I definitely had some ideas of how I thought it would end, but I never felt it to be too predictable.

All in all, In her Bones was a fast paced and entertaining suspense read and it had me captivated from the first page to the very last. I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy Ruth Ware novels or other suspense novels with leading female characters. Thank you to NetGalley and Atria for sending this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Written in True Crime story fashion, In Her Bones kept me intrigued and on the edge of my seat. Well written prose with plenty of twists and little gore, unravels this suspenseful thriller.

Edie Becket definitely hasn't has a traditional family life. Her mother was on death row for the brutal murders of six women. Needless to say, normal wasn't in her grasp. She has plenty of issues and rightfully so. She's an alcoholic who becomes fixated on the lives of her mothers victims. Can you say creepy? She finds herself in too deep when another person is murdered and because of a black out, she can't remember what happened.

A deliciously morbidly sinister tale that had an ending that left me pleasantly surprised. At times it did seem a bit drawn out but overall well worth the time.

Edie Beckett is the daughter of the infamous serial killer Lilith Wade, a fact that has haunted her whole adult life. In addition, Edie has a strange and obsessive fascination with Lilith’s victims’ family members. When one of these family members is found murdered, Edie becomes the prime suspect. Knowing this, Edie goes off the grid in a dogged quest to find out the real culprit so that she can clear her name and disassociate from her mother’s haunting legacy.

I am a huge Kate Moretti fan and I devoured this. I found the plot to be original and interesting. Edie’s character is multifaceted, with elements of strength, tenacity, extreme intelligence and very limited social skills, which made her fascinating. I love how she came into her own in the end. The plot is filled with suspense with constant elements of danger lurking around every corner. Overall fast-paced, interesting read which I would recommend to all.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Atria Books and Kate Moretti for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Wow. Just wow. This book is riveting and unpredictable, a wild ride of a read that left me breathless and wanting more. Kate Moretti is a brilliant author at the peak of her talent in this unputdownable story filled with betrayal and heart-pounding action.

IN HER BONES is the first book I’ve ever read by Kate Moretti. The twists and turns keep coming and I had to know how it was going to end! Every time I thought I knew where this story was going, a few pages later, Kate Moretti threw me for a loop and I knew I was wrong! Murderers don’t just destroy the families of their victims they also destroy their own.

Edie Beckett is the daughter of Lilith Wade who, fifteen years ago, murdered six women. They were the wives of the men Lilith had affairs with. Edie has become obsessed with her mother’s victims families. She gets very close to one of the family members, spends the night with him and then he turns up murdered. The killing is very much like the killings her mother committed. What a crazy premise right? IN HER BONES is a crazy and wild roller coaster ride that turns your thinking upside down!

Edie is a hot mess! She is trying to stay sober, but falls off the wagon and now finds herself wondering if she killed this man in a drunken haze……is she her mother’s daughter in more ways than one? IN HER BONES is very easy to follow and I really enjoyed Kate’s writing. The story does drag just a bit, but overall, I really enjoyed it. The plot of IN HER BONES is excellent but also crazy. I was instantly pulled in to the story and couldn’t wait to see how it ended.

Kate has done it again with this book!! I seriously could not put it down. I was skeptical at first - because the first chapter deals with Edie's mom being a serial killer - but have no fear - even for someone like me this book takes me on a journey I didn't want to interrupt. I did everything I could to finish it as quickly as possible!!

Edie Beckett, a 30 year old on again off again alcoholic, lives her life under the radar. She is content with people not recognizing her and being able to go about her business. She also fears she could be become a sociopath like her mother Lilith Wade. Lilith Wade murdered 6 people 15 years ago and it seems like no matter what she does or how far she goes, Edie cannot outrun her past. Edie has become obsessed with finding out all she can in regards to the families of her mother's victims. She even goes as far as creating fake Facebook accounts and befriending these people and sometimes even following them in person. Her obsessive behavior may seem harmless to her, but it is pretty stalker-ish to me. Even if she does at times “help” them in small ways without them knowing.

Her days of invisibility are over when someone she comes in contact with ends up murdered. She is at the top of the suspect list in no time. Edie is never one to give in though and she takes it upon herself to try and figure who the real killer is while also attempting to hide out from the cops. But what if she is the killer and just doesn’t remember?

The million-dollar question is...if your loved one was a murderer, would you notice? Would you suspect something was wrong and contact the police? When people find out a murderer/serial killer was married and some even having children, they wonder how could no one have known? Could someone have done something to stop more crimes from occurring?

When someone is murdered, the side effects doesn’t stop with the victim, they extend all the way to the victims family and even the family of the accused. Kate Moretti explores that a little with Edie Beckett in In Her Bones. I enjoyed reading the story. The concept of it is what piqued my interest. It was a pretty quick weekend read. In Her Bones wasn’t high on the suspense, but my curiosity for figuring out the killer kept me turning pages. The author knows how to create rich complex characters and well written mysteries that keep her readers guessing from first page to last.

"I generally enjoy thinking on my feet, manipulating facts, bending the truth, to get what I want."

I'm not sure what it is, but there's something about the season change from summer to fall that makes me crave one of Kate's thrillers. Maybe it's that it's the time of year her book release or maybe it's just the feeling her stories give me. A dark and twisted tale that keeps me on the edge of my set until it unfolds. IN HER BONES is the story of Edie Beckett the daughter of serial killer, Lilith Wade. It's a story that dives into the mind of a killer and what might drive them to commit such heinous acts. It's a story that tests and explores families and difference between nature verses nurture. It shines a light on mental illness in a way that I found very intriguing.

"The hunt thrilled me. The flush of heat against my neck at each discovery, the way the keys flew under my fingertips, the information seemed summoned at will - almost effortless."

Edie is trying survive while flying under the radar of her mothers crimes. But when history looks like it might be repeating itself, Edie finds herself as the number one suspect. On the run from the police and her past Edie discovers more than she bargains for. Being inside Edie's mind while she tries to discover who the real killer is had me second guessing everything, questioning my own safety and how easily information can be found in this digital era. The ending was nothing that I predicted while trying to solve the mystery myself!

"... between the contacts, photos, historical data, and GPS metadata, everything you need to know about anyone is sitting in their pocket."

If you enjoy mystery and a little bit of psychology or sociology, something that might make you question things in your own life, then this is the book for you. Kate's writing had my interest peaked from the beginning and the very last word. Her writing is always beautiful and stories intriguing. I loved her last two books as well, you can check out my reviews for THE VANISHING YEAR and THE BLACKBIRD SEASON, if you're interested.

In Her Bones by Kate Moretti is a highly recommended mystery/suspense novel about a woman on the run trying to uncover the truth.

Edie Beckett, 30, is just trying to live her life out of the spotlight. Fifteen years ago, her mother, Lilith Wade, was convicted of murdering six women, and sentenced to death row. The media frenzy continued after the release of the unauthorized biography by an unknown author. Edie is a recovering alcoholic who keeps to herself, has a co-dependent relationship with her brother, and an unhealthy obsession with the surviving family members of Lilith's victims. She keeps notebooks on their personal information, stalks them online (and in person if possible).

Edie's current obsession is Peter Lipsky, whose wife was fatally stabbed by Lilith. She's stalking him online, through a survivor's message board, and collecting information about him and his late wife, Colleen. Colleen's murder is the one that doesn't fit the profile of Lilith's other victims. When Edie meets Peter during one of her reconnaissance missions, she ends up drinking too much and and goes home with him. She leaves before he wakes up, but is later found murdered that morning. She doesn't remember much of the night and now she is the prime suspect for his murder. Edie goes on the run while trying to uncover what really happened and who killed Peter.

Edie is a sympathetic, fleshed-out character and the main narrator in the book, although there are also excerpts from the biography of Lilith included and a few from Gil Brandt, the detective who caught Lilith, but also helped Edie. As the novel unfolds, Edie reminisces about her troubled childhood with Lilith while dealing with her current situation. Edie is also clearly a damaged character, and much of this began in her childhood with Lilith.

While on the run rather than talking to detectives, she does make some questionable/interesting choices along the way and has a few stumbles. In her own way, she is a resourceful, smart, and street savvy character. She is clever enough to evade being caught while trying to ferret out the truth about Peter's murder, which also requires her to look back at his wife's murder. Was Lilith responsible for it or is there another killer running loose out there and could Edie now be a target?

I found this to be a well-written, compelling mystery (rather than thriller). The pace is even, rather than fast, until the end, but the steps Edie takes and her reasoning is interesting enough to keep your attention. In Her Bones held my attention throughout. Although I had all manner of guesses and suspects, I didn't have a clue about the ending until just before it happened. Nicely played Moretti!

I have read almost all of Kate Moretti's books and they are all unique and such good reads. Lilith Wade was arrested for killing six women and usually a mystery/thriller would completely focus on her serial killing and her victims, but not this book. This book focuses on her son and daughter that are left out in the world trying to live with the consequences of what she did.

Edie Beckett was such an interesting character to follow. She was on the cusp of being unreliable and I liked that I was wondering if I should trust if she was a good person in the middle of all of the chaos. When one of the surviving victims of her mother's past is murdered and she was in the middle of it, Edie goes on the run and must solve the murder to prove her own innocence.

I judge most mystery/thrillers on who ends up being the killer and if I feel like I missed some clues or if it is from left field - I HATE when it is from left field. This one surprised me but in all the good ways. I always say if I want to reread to see if I can find the killer faster the second time that is a good sign for a mystery thriller read. I could have started this one the minute I finished to see if I can find the clues!

After reading The Vanishing Year and enjoying it, I knew I had to read In Her Bones. I can't say that it wooed me. On the contrary, I think it was just ok.

What was the book about?

Edie Beckett is a 30-year-old female. She has a 9 to 5 job that she doesn't care much for. She's a recovering alcoholic and her past has marked her. Edie is the daughter of the famous serial killer Lilith Wade. Usually, serial killers are men, but Lilith is one of the exceptions. She murdered six women while Edie was still a kid.

Now as an adult, Edie is using her job to track the family members of the victims. She gets to close to Peter, one of the husbands. Next thing she knows, Peter is dead and she's the main suspect. The same cop who took her mother in is after her and she's running out of time to find the truth and save herself from going to prison.

Why didn't it work for me?

The pace for one. It was too slow.
I felt we were missing pieces of information about Edie and her family.
The resolution the author used to close the plot. I knew who the baddie was from early on. It was too predictable.
Or maybe it was the high expectations I had for this author's work.

What did I like?

The theme. I was intrigued about having the serial killer's daughter's POV narrate the book. In real life, it has to be horrible to know you're related to someone so evil. I can't even imagine it. I'm sure that the families are seen as guilty too for not recognizing that the people they live with can be responsible for such heinous acts.
I like Edie. She was resourceful and smart. She was one step ahead of the police. I respected her desire to learn what really happened to Peter.

3/5 Fangs

In Her Bones is the very first Kate Moretti book I have ever read, but man does it make me want to read more from her.

"Murder is a mostly stupid act committed by mostly stupid people in their most desperate moment"
- Gil Brandt

What it's about: Edie Beckett is the daughter of a serial killer, but not just any serial killer. She is the daughter of Lilith Wade who was sentenced to death row for the horrific murder of 6 women when Edie was just a young girl. Edie is now 30 years old; a recovering alcoholic who has a weird relationship with her brother, and a job that's definitely not her dream job. She also has an odd secret pastime, tracking and watching the families of Lilith's victims. When a man is found murdered and she becomes the prime suspect, Edie goes into hiding and races to find out what really happened the night of his murder... before the police or anyone else catch up to her.

The book is told mostly from Edie's perspective with snippets from a book that was published about her mother's murders, and the occasional chapter from the detective that caught Lilith - Gil Brandt. I loved this style, and I thought it kept the book flowing very quickly making it a fast read. The only gripe I really have with this book is that I don't think it should be classified as a thriller; suspense and mystery sure, but not thriller. I didn't find it to be particularly chilling or overly suspenseful like the cover touts in the author quotes either. There is definitely some suspense, but this comes in spurts and isn't the overall vibe of the book.

I know there were a few people that either didn't like Edie at first, or didn't like her at all, but I never really had that problem. I don't know why, but not once did I really question anything she was doing. Sure, she doesn't make the best choices, but from the way Moretti wrote this book I didn't want to murder Edie for every stupid mistake she made. Now maybe that has something to do with not connecting with her, but either way I was fine reading from her perspective and trying to figure out what the h-e-double hockey sticks she was going to do next.

Another complaint I have seen is that some people figured out the ending, but as usual I did not. I really didn't have anything in the book figured out. And although I wasn't necessarily super surprised at anything, I still enjoyed the journey of reading this book and learning everything as it was revealed.

Final Thought: I think this is going to be another one of those books that some people are going to really enjoy, but will annoy others. I guess it could also be seen as a bit predictable if you are really concentrating on figuring out what is going on. The idea was similar to Good Me, Bad Me, at least as far as reading a book about the daughter of a female serial killer, but overall I enjoyed this book a lot more than that one. Just make sure you are not expecting a fast-paced thriller because that is not what this book is. At all. Personally I really enjoyed it though and recommend!

In Her Bones is a tale of the aftermath of murder. There are no grisly scenes, just the weight the survivors carry in their hearts and how their lives are forever impacted by their loss. Ms. Moretti’s main character, Edie Beckett--the daughter of a serial killer, has spent her life feeling a bit guilty and remorseful for her mother’s misdeeds. Edie finds herself on a treacherous journey for survival that ultimately shows her that she is also a victim of Lilith Wade.

In Her Bones is told primarily from Edie’s perspective; interspersed in the story are a few chapters of narration from Gil Brandt, the investigator who brought in Lilith Wade, as well as excerpts of an anonymously authored “tell-all” book about the Lilith Wade killing spree. Brandt and Edie are interesting characters. Through Edie’s narration, readers see her obsession with the victims’ families and the impact her unstable childhood has had via her poor decisions and inability to move on. The dynamic between Edie, her brother and her sister-in-law is odd in a perverse way. Brandt’s perspective made me question his intent toward Edie. At times he seems fatherly as he helps her find a sober path to adulthood after her mother is incarcerated. However, there are times when he seems a bit lecherous, which made me question his motives. As the story tension mounts while Edie is uncovering discrepancies in the original case, I found myself questioning Brandt’s work ethic and motives even more.

When Edie’s (somewhat) chance meeting of one of the survivors leads to her being the prime suspect in his murder, she is on the run and on the clock to find the real killer. Was she the intended victim? Is she being framed? Is there anyone she can trust? After a bit of a slow but necessary story and character set up, this story twist ramps up the intrigue and action. I really enjoyed Edie’s intelligent sleuthing and her dogged determination. I loved that I was torn between believing that Brandt wanted to help her or just use her as an easy way to close a murder case.

Ms. Moretti respectfully addresses abuse and mental illness as Lilith Wade’s life is revealed through the book excerpts and Edie’s investigations. All the while, readers are treated to a thrilling mystery featuring an intelligent and street-smart woman. The time pressure Edie feels became a loudly ticking clock in my head as I read the shocking twists along the way to a surprising culmination. I loved where Edie’s journey took her—a new beginning filled with hope and plans for a future as if a cancerous tumor had been cut out of her leaving her free from her past.

In Her Bones by Kate Moretti is a thriller that tackles the question of just what might happen with the families that a killer has left behind. Family and friends often are quoted with saying they had no idea as the suspect can live a perfectly normal life around their crimes.

Fifteen years ago Lilith Wade was arrested and tried for the brutal murders of six women and sent to a maximum security prison. The families of the victims were not the only ones left behind after Lilith’s conviction, Lilith was a mother herself and her children have done their best to hide from the media attention.

Now at thirty Edie Beckett has developed an obsession with finding out more about the families of her mother’s victims. Edie can’t help but wonder how or if they’ve moved one with their lives being in a dead end job and a recovering addict herself. Edie gets a little to close to one family member though and then finds herself the suspect in his murder investigation.

Well, as one may guess when they see that I’ve rated this one at 2.5 stars I wasn’t a huge fan of this one from Kate Moretti. The problem didn’t lie in the writing style as this wasn’t my first book by the author but more in the overall story. I wasn’t a huge fan of Edie from early on and questioned her motives and moves and along with that I also guessed the conclusion way too early in the story so needless to say this one just wasn’t for me.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Once I start this book, I couldn’t stop. Moretti does a great job at ending each chapter with just enough of a cliffhanger that you want to just keep reading. If not for this pesky thing called work, this could’ve easily been a one-sitting read. Edie’s obsession with the loved ones of her mother’s victims felt satisfyingly creepy and that scene where she finagled the password out of that guy? I don’t know if I will trust text messages supposedly from my bank or insurance again.

The psychological thriller is one of my favorite genres, but the “unreliable female narrator” trope is becoming old. Jane Doe is an alcoholic and she sees something sinister. But did she really see it? IN HER BONES technically does fall into this category, but it actually felt fresh. This time, Edie isn’t the only voice in the mix where their memory of the event is hazy.

MY RATING: ✰✰✰.5

tl;dr -- so amazing I preordered a copy while reading the arc.

In Her Bones is an outstanding suspense novel. It's about Edie, who, as the story opens, is wondering, "How much like my mother am I?"

This is not a question you want to be asking yourself when your mother is a serial killer.

And when you have a bit of an obsession with the families of her victims.

Oh, and one of those family members? Dead

I won't say more for fear of spoilers, so on to general stuff:

-- Edie is awesome. I've read a,few "child of a serial killer" novels, but this one blew them out of the water. She's an extremely well written character, smart but flawed, desperate for love but terrified of it too, and so, so terrified of what she might be capable of.

-- The supporting characters are really well done. In particular Lilith, Edie's mother, Dylan, her brother, and Gil, the cop who has known Edie since Lilith was arrested, and with whom she has a very complicated history. Special shout out to Dylan's long suffering and yet also insufferable wife, Camille.

-- The plot. The slow unfurling of Edie's past mixed with the nonstop scramble she's found herself in the present makes In Her Bones so difficult to put down!

There are plenty of times when I read an arc and enjoy it. There are very few times that I've read one and preordered the book while reading it because it's just that good. This was one of those times. Edie's story is heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure, and one that is well worth your time.

My Review of “In Her Bones ” by Kate Moretti Atria Books, September 4, 2018

WOW! I loved the unique premise in “In Her Bones” by Author Kate Moretti. Can you imagine having a serial killer as a mother? Someone capable of nursing you when you are sick, but can stab women to death in cold-hearted murder? Add in a dysfunctional brother, who is constantly in your life. What about being obsessed with the families of the deceased and keeping detailed journals?? I read this novel in one sitting. “In Her Bones” is a captivating, intense, dark, twisted, riveting, page turning novel. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Thriller, Mystery and Suspense. The story takes place in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the story. The author describes her dysfunctional cast of characters as complex and complicated. Given the circumstances, that seems to be an understatement. I imagine that Freud would have a field day with this information.

Edie Beckett tries to stay out of the spotlight, and even tries to stay sober. Someone has written a book about her mother’s brutal murdering sprees, and Edie can’t help be obsessed to see what is going on to those families who are the survivors. As fate steps in, Edie crosses the line, and gets drunk after socializing with one of the victims. Edie finds out he is dead, and she is confident that she didn’t kill him. Or did she? Is she her mother’s daughter? Edie runs to survive, and try to make sense of what happened and find out who the killer is.

I would recommend this book to readers that love a suspenseful , intense and roller coaster of a ride. I received a copy from NetGalley for my honest review.

This is the first book I’ve read from author, Kate Moretti, and while I enjoyed the story, I felt like the first 20% was a little hard to follow with a lot of characters being introduced. I highly recommend referring to the list of victims at the beginning while reading.

Edie is the daughter of a serial killer, with a somewhat unhealthy obsession with the families of her mother’s victims, the wives of men with which she had affairs. Edie soon finds herself the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Does the apple not fall from the tree? Will Edie be joining her mother in prison?

I received an advanced copy of this book; all opinions are my own.
