This was a unique story, I was hooked from the beginning. It has suspense twist and a thrilling atmosphere.

The characters were original and the story line was brilliant. The story is told in 1st person from the daughter (Edie) of a female serial killer (Lilith), with some chapters in 3rd person focusing on the detective, or snippets of books/news articles about Lilith.

I find it interesting and I was intrigued from the way this story is told. The story was well written and an easy read with an interesting background story.

I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

When Edie Beckett was in her teens, her mother, Lilith Wade, murdered six women. Lilith went to prison for life and Edie's life irrevocably changed. Now she's nearly thirty, trying to stay sober, working a city clerk job, and living a lonely life. Her only family is her brother Dylan, and she has no friends, no real life. At night, Edie secretly obsesses over the families of Lilith's victims, watching them online--and in real life. Then she actually meets one in person, and a man ends up murdered. Edie is immediately the police's one and only suspect. The investigating detective, Gil Brandt, is the same one who arrested her mother. He knows Edie better than anyone. She goes on the run, with Gil on her trail. Will Edie discover the truth in time?

This book just kept getting better with every page. I absolutely loved Kate Moretti's THE BLACKBIRD SEASON and was worried this one might not live up to it. I shouldn't have worried. This is just an excellent, fascinating novel.

The book is told from the point of view of Edie and Gil, with excerpts included from a tell-all book written about Lilith and her family. It all combines to make a very intriguing read. The way the novel explores looking at serial killers from the perspective of their family is just amazing and interesting. As Edie says, "Sometimes, Lilith was just my mother."

You get this really in-depth look at how Lilith was both an awful mother, a regular mother, and influenced by mental illness. The book does a great job of providing a portrait of mental illness as well. I thought its look at Lilith as a serial killer was just so well-done. Lilith isn't necessarily the main focus--that's Edie--but she's had such an influence on forming Edie that we learn so much about her.

As for Edie, I was worried at first that I wouldn't like her or enjoy her character, because sometimes I have a hard time with characters who make nothing but bad decisions. But I quickly grew attached to her and to really, really like her. One of the best things about this book is that despite its serious and sometimes even gruesome subject matter, it can be funny sometimes. It's definitely heartbreaking and real. It's powerfully written, and Edie becomes this wonderfully great main character. She's so very smart and so very real. Moretti gives such a personality to everyone through her excellent detail; you're just able to visualize each character so well. I really love how you can get lost in her books. The bond between Brandt and Edie is interesting--different in many ways, but I liked how they were tied together in some way, and the how they each described that thread.

What's so great about this book is that you get to explore the serial killer aspect--how Edie is affected by her mom, some of the elements that formed Lilith into what she is, and more, but you also get a really well-done mystery too, after a character dies and Edie goes on the run. These two storylines run expertly in parallel and keep you riveted throughout the entire novel. There are some awesome twists and turns, and the whole book is just so well-done. I really loved these characters and truly just felt changed by the end of this one.

Overall, this is just a wonderful book. The characters are amazing and detailed, the plot is excellent, and I was just drawn in from the beginning. This goes deeper than your usual mystery or thriller, and I was so impressed and touched by this novel. I highly recommend this one! 4.5 stars.

Moretti writes a forward to In Her Bones that really resonated with me. I, too, am so curious about the family of killers. The daughter of The Happy Face Killer had a show on investigation Discovery (my favorite channel) where she had the family of a killer meet with the family of the victims. It was fascinating! I knew going into this book I would be intrigued. The story is told in 1st person from the daughter (Edie) of a female serial killer (Lilith), with some chapters in 3rd person focusing on the detective, or snippets of books/news articles about Lilith.

I was really uncomfortable (not in a bad way) with being in Edie's head at times. Inside her head are her thoughts, unfiltered. She knows that following the family of her mom's victim is creepy and so she doesn't let the outside world know that is what she is doing. However, since we are reading her POV, we know she is doing it! She hacks into their lives, stalks them, and even though she does nice things for them when possible, it doesn't negate the fact its creepy! She knows its creepy which makes it even worse I think. Edie has so many issues stemming from the fallout of her mother's crimes. She dropped out of school, she is an alcoholic, she has commitment issues, and a slew of other things I'm sure a therapist would have a field day with! Her brother also has a slew of issues.

Obviously, there are murders that occur throughout the story. And confusion about the murders (who, what, why). And stalking (because that is exactly what Edie is doing!). None of them are gruesomely described or exploited in writing for shock value or anything, but the tenor of the book is unsettling and might not be everyone's cup of tea! There are multiple things you are trying to figure out throughout the story from whether or not Colleen was actually a victim of Lilith's, who killed Peter, who is WINPA99 and why are they so involved, and who the heck wrote that damn book. Add in the strange relationship Edie has with Tim and you have more questions than there are pages! I didn't see the story ending quite the way it did, but in hindsight, it made perfect sense. Honestly, I didn't correctly guess the answer to most of those questions but the answers made so much sense I was surprised I didn't see it. Even through all this intrigue, the book FELT long. I think there were sections that could have been cut in order to make the book flow. Perhaps they were left there to help confuse and confound the reader further (totally worked) but I found myself skimming a lot through the middle.

I thought this book was an enjoyable read. It was a little draggy in spots, but I would definitely recommend it as a summer read.

This is my third Kate Moretti novel and I am a big fan of her writing style. This one has a dark and twisted theme. I reads just like a true crime story . I recently (today actually) saw a Dr. Phil episode where he interviewed a woman whose father is a notorious serial killer. In the novel, Edie is the daughter of a woman who is a convicted serial killer. Well, it gets even more twisted when Edie gets too close to someone connected to one of her mother's victims.

It definitely gets interesting and Edie finds herself wanted for murder. She is on the run while professing her innocence. Can she find the real killer before the police catch up with her? Detective Brandt has some history with Edie and knows how she operates.

A great crime mystery with more than a few twists. Suspense minus the gore (thank you very much)!

Looking forward to more from the talented Kate Moretti.

Thanks to Atria Books for including me on the blog tour for In Her Bones by Kate Moretti. This was my first read by Moretti and now I really need to pick up my copy of The Vanishing Year!

Edie Beckett’s mother is a serial killer. Yes, you read that right. Lilith is a world wide known killer, everybody knows Beckett’s mom as the woman who killed six people. Fortunately for Beckett she was a minor during the murders so her name was never in the news. She dipped into alcohol but now at 30 she has her life on the right track. Except for one tiny obsession... learning and following the families that Lilith destroyed. Her obsession is all fun and games until one of the remaining spouses of Lilith’s rampage has been murdered! Ooooo

I really enjoyed In Her Bones and I liked how it was different than most serial killer books. I mean, can you imagine if your parent, especially your mother being a serial killer? Gosh no!

Most of the book we have Beckett’s POV but we also have Brandt’s. Brandt was on Lilith’s Case when she was arrested all those years ago. He has helped Beckett out in more ways than one. I liked hearing his POV because you could really tell he cared about Beckett and where her future would go.

Thanks again to Atria Books! I rate this 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and recommend!

I've heard great things about the writing of author Kate Moretti from a number of people whose reading tastes are pretty similar to my own, and I even went so far as to purchase a couple of her books. Somehow, I never got around to reading them, even though their synopses look extremely intriguing. Since I'm much more likely to read a book I've promised to review, I was elated to receive an early copy of her latest novel In Her Bones. As soon as I started reading, I knew this was exactly what I was looking for in a thriller.

It's been fifteen years since Lilith Wade was sentenced to death for the murders of six women, but the media hasn't seemed to lose interest in her high-profile case. In fact, an unauthorized biography of Lilith has recently been released, much to the dismay of her thirty-year-old daughter Edie who is doing her best to live a normal life in spite of her horrendous childhood. Unfortunately, things aren't exactly easy for Edie. She struggles with an addiction to alcohol, she doesn't care much for her job, and her older brother seems to be losing his grip on reality. So as one might imagine, the extra media attention showered on her by all manner of strangers is something she could definitely do without.

Edie also has a secret she's desperate to keep under wraps. Over the past several years, she has grown increasingly obsessed with the families of Lilith's victims and has created fake profiles on various social media sites so she can be aware of what's going on in their lives. She's even gone so far as to follow some of them around the city. Edie tries to tell herself she's just curious to know how they've managed in the years following their terrible losses, but a part of her knows there's more to it than that.

Peter's wife is one of the women Lilith is said to have killed, but he's not so sure that's the truth. Peter thinks someone else is responsible for his wife's death, and he's doing his best to uncover the identity of the killer. When Edie stumbles upon his investigation, she decides to join forces with him without telling him who she really is. The two meet and spend the night together. Edie awakens early the next morning and hurries out of Peter's house, unwilling to deal with the awkward morning-after conversation she's sure will ensue if she hangs around until Peter wakes up. A few hours later, she learns that Peter has been found dead in his home by a neighbor, and it seems that Edie herself was the last person to have seen him alive.

Now Edie is really in trouble. The police detective who worked her mother's case all those years ago is hot on her trail, and Edie is determined to stay out of his way. She knows she'll be accused of killing Peter if the police get their hands on her, so she goes into hiding and begins an investigation of her own into Peter's death.

I adore books about people on the run, and In Her Bones is one of the best I've read in quite some time. Edie is unlike any other heroine I've encountered in recent years, and I loved her originality. She has a moral code all her own, but Ms. Moretti does a great job helping readers sympathize with her despite her often questionable actions. Right from the start, the reader knows Edie is an incredibly troubled young woman, and I for one was hoping she'd come out on top even though I didn't always agree with the things she did. She does experience a great deal of personal growth over the course of the novel, but not in an unbelievable way. This is not one of those stories where the heroine becomes a completely different person than she was at the beginning; she remains true to herself throughout the book, even though some of her perceptions change.

Edie's story is interspersed with excerpts from the unauthorized biography of Lilith Wade. I really enjoyed getting some insight into Lilith's character, as it helped me understand what Edie went through as a child. We never actually spend time with Lilith, but we still learn quite a bit about Edie’s early life. These excerpts are pretty dark, and some readers might have trouble reading them.

It takes a lot to surprise me, since I read a ton of thrillers, but I was completely caught off guard when the identity of Peter's killer was finally revealed. Somehow, I never saw it coming, even though it seems totally obvious to me when I think about it in retrospect. I formed all kinds of opinions about who it could be, but I never even came close to figuring it out.

I'm so glad I own a couple more of Ms. Moretti's books. Now that I've read this one, I'm in a hurry to devour her backlist. She's a very skilled writer, and I can't wait to immerse myself in another one of her dark thrillers.

Kate Moretti is able to bring readers into her dark and twisted world where readers will never see what is coming until they read it. The story has more twist and turns than this reader expected. While the story is more of a physiological thriller than mystery as readers follow Edie on her quest to understand those effected by her mothers choices.

In her Bones is slow moving for the first half of the book but slowly picks up as Edie struggles with her memories.

The author is a master of the unexpected and readers will eat up her books.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Atria Books for the advance copy of Kate Moretti In Her Bones.

Edie is the character I have been waiting for. She is interesting, smart, and most important well developed. The story is full of plot twists and clever writing that kept me on the edge of my seat.

This was pretty predictable, I read about half of it and just couldn't get to the finish line.. Its hard to stand out in the genre and this one didn't do it for me. Sorry to say. Theres nothing I enjoy more than finding a new writer

4.5-5 stars Excellent book from beginning to end. Moretti did it again with this book, absolutely amazing thriller that really makes you think, hold your breathe, tense up, and wonder what's next! I think the writing was even a bit better than The Vanishing Year, which was great too. A great thrilling, suspenseful, and chilling read.
Will be highly recommending in Chapter Chatter Pub closer to publication and Kate Moretti's live group chat. Thank you for allowing me to read prior to publication!

I had high hopes for this book--I've really enjoyed Moretti's previous novels, and while I enjoyed this one, I felt like it was lacking *something*. Edie has struggled with her identity and with getting her life on track, as she is the daughter of a notorious female serial killer, Lilith Wade. She is mired in her mother's crimes, following (online) and researching the people who lost a loved one to Lilith's crimes. Through this unhealthy obsession, she ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is suspected of the murder of one of the people she's virtually (and ultimately physically) following.

I think the premise of the book is really interesting. I liked the excerpts of the biography of Lilith Wade that were scattered throughout--I thought that was a clever way of introducing information from the past that tied in with the present day story. For me though, the story sort of bogged down in the middle, and it wrapped up a little too quickly and tidily at the end. I would have liked to see more development of some of the supporting characters, especially the policeman who had been looking out for Edie, and Edie's brother.

This book was really good until it wasn't. The ending was disjointed and sudden. There are two mysteries. One, who is the murderer and Two, who is the ghostwriter of the true crime book. Neither answer was satisfactory. The build up was well widen and then it just fell apart.

IN HER BONES takes the serial killer genre and adds an interesting twist: Instead of chronicling the murders of the serial killer Lilith Wade or the terror she wreaked on her victims, it gives us the life of someone who loved Lilith, someone who saw her as something other than a monster. That person is Lilith's daughter Edie, now an adult and shuffling through life under the shadow of her mother's crimes. When Edie is linked to a murder victim, she quickly becomes the prime suspect as people assume that, like her mother, violence runs in her bones.

I was hooked immediately by the intriguing premise — can a person who was raised by a serial killer ever truly live a normal life? — and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough as Edie sought to clear her own name. She's a complicated, fascinating character, and there were plenty of twists and surprises to keep me hooked until the very end. Definitely pick this one up!

I tried to really like this book and although it is very well written, the plot line and the characters weren't exactly what I was expecting. Having said that, I am sure other reviews will favor it because the writing to very strong and the premise is good.

Kate Moretti is a must read author for me. She never disappoints and this book was no different. I was getting bored of the thrillers I've been reading recently but she was able to suck me right in. Highly recommend!

IN HER BONES is a refreshingly different addition to the very crowded crime drama. Moretti's established fans will be all over this one and new readers will find themselves hunting down her backlist the moment they finish.

Kate Moretti has done it again. she has created a novel that demands to be read. her strong characters and compelling story line make the reader want to continue the novel and not put the book down.

The author advises that the idea of this novel came from the fascination with true crime stories. i am also addicted to these wanting to know what makes the killer tick and yes what happens to not only the victims families but how are those close to the killer affected.

i could not stop reading this book. there are multiple layers of suspense--- was lillith really guilty of all the murders they say she committed? is the reason edie folloes "the remainders" sinister or one of compassion? who wrote the true crine version of lilliths story and why remain anonymous? why does the lead detective brand have suxh a strong bond with edie? and does edie stand a chance or is the need to kill imbedded within?

all these questions twist and turn to make this a complex and addictive read! coming 9-4-2018. dont miss it!

Kate Moretti is one of my FAVORITE authors and just keeps getting better. for fans of gillian flynn (especially dark places) and meghan abott. thanks to the author and Atria for an early read
