I think this book may have been more suitable for my husband, who loves James Rollins, action/adventure, and all manner of sci-fi. I was very intrigued by the premise, though. I was expecting a science-y suspense novel, a la Michael Crichton. That's not what Hunter is. It is more of a Rambo like action with a highly unbelievable plot. I take issue with the "best in the world" trope. It diminished the humanity of the main character. In the end, I just didn't enjoy the book as much as I had hoped. But I do think there is an audience for Hunter. This is a high tension, bloody, action book, and those fans will likely have a terrific time reading this.

This is my sort of book! Action packed, a wolf, blood and gore filled, a wolf, suspicious characters, a wolf, awesome team of badasses, a wolf, a flawed yet redeemable main character and did I mention that there's a WOLF in it? Plus the dubious science, let's never forget the dubious science.

Hunter is an expert tracker, he finds people that other people can't with his excellent tracking skills and his black wolf Ghost, he's roped in to find a beast loose in the Arctic Circle, it's already fucked up some research stations and killed a bunch of elite military guards and is loitering around being a pain in the arse. He agrees and eventually finds out it's human but with gene splicing (dubious science) its been turned into a huge abomination and it's not too happy at all!

There's much action and violence, harsh language and dickishness (I say that's a word!) all over the shop and I thoroughly and highly enjoyed it!

I flew through this, I didn't want to put it down and couldn't sleep until it was done and I knew how it ended. So very good!!!

And if IMDb is right then this is gonna be a movie!! I want it NOW!!

*Huge thanks to James Byron Huggins, WildBlue Press and NetGalley for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own*

Loved. This. Book. Awesome story involving a bigger than life hero and the creature he must hunt in the Alaskan Wilds. If you read Koontz "Watchers" read this. If you didn't, (you should), read this anyway if you want action, some intrigue and a very tense hunt in the woods where something wicked this way is coming. Filled with intense battles, some lightning quick, some lengthy and nerve racking, we accompany Hunter and Ghost, his massive black wolf companion along with an elite team of military hunters to track down and discover just what has been single-handedly destroying military research bases throughout the Alaskan Wilderness. Relentless and entertaining.

Wow, it was like I was reading a James Rollins book and once I started I couldn't stop, can't wait to read more by this author ,with at said thanks Netgalley for letting me read and review it in change for my honest opinion.

Hunter was not the book for me, but that's more because of my preferred reading genre than the book itself. I felt it was a little too gory, although I think I should've expected that going in to it based off the premise and title. I'd recommend for adult readers who like sci-fi.

Title was archived before I could review it sadly. Guess I will have to buy it if I would like to read it. I am new to the Galley and was not aware of the fact that the archival date meant that I could not access the title anymore. Too bad

Nathaniel Hunter, the greatest "tracker" alive, is used to succeeding when all others have failed, tracking the most exotic quarry imaginable. But this time he is called upon by the US Military after a bioengineering effort gone wrong. A specimen has been produced that is ruthless, supremely powerful, cunning and without remorse. It is laying waste to military installations in the Alaskan wilderness and leaving a trail of carnage in its wake. Hunter was raised in the wilderness and has honed his skills to a level as to be almost one with the animals he is tracking.

As Hunter begins his pursuit, accompanied by a military team, it becomes clear that something is not right. His prey adapts and heals with almost supernatural ease. Hunter must find his prey before it becomes unstoppable.

This book is a wild ride and the tactical battle between Hunter and the beast is something to relish, as each has finally met his equal in battle. The chess game between them as they battle the elements, each other, and the deception of black ops military personnel is great fun. The scenes are well-written and the suspense is thick as each Alpha circles the other to come out on top. Recommended.

Ebook/Adventure: I did get this book from NetGalley in lieu of an honest review. When I looked it up on Goodreads, I discovered that this is a 2nd edition with the original written in 1999. From the page count difference, I gather that the author may have updated the book (technology) for this edition. I could be wrong. There are no cellphones, but satellite a phone like the one in Jurassic Park 2: Lost World. There is also no mention of the Iraq War or 9/11.

Did I like the book, yes. It is more an adventure than a mystery or thriller. The whole story takes place in about three days. It did take me a while to read it because on top of it begin 300 pages, this really isn't a book I could read during my breaks at work. It should be read in long stretches simple because there is so much action going on. I liked all of the heroes and hated all the bad guys. I did like that two characters you thought were going to be bad, ended up being the saving grace. Then again, some characters ended up being really bad.

The main character Hunter, well all I could picture in my head was Fred Dryer (who I was surprised to see is still alive) from the old "Hunter" TV series. I also didn't understand why none of the characters thought the creature might be like the Predator, just sayin'. The book is a little long with the group encountering the creature several, several times. My favorite character: Ghost, of course.

How do you hunt a creature that may be as smart, but much more deadly, than you? While man has always been able to study an animal and use it's habits to track and bring them down, what if the animal knew this and used it against you? While this book is an excellent thriller, it is also an excellent source of nightmares for weeks to come,

It was an interesting enough read. The main character is called Hunter. He is just too perfect for my taste. I’m pretty sure there is no way anyone could live through what they endured. He is a likeable guy though. And he has a wolf for a pet. I liked him the best.
There is a lot of science in it, which just made it a little hard to follow for me.

OK read, but not what I anticipated. The book cover and description caught my eye, but this was way too Sci-Fi and futuristic for my taste. Others that like this type of book will probably enjoy it—it just wasn’t the thriller I expected.

After starting the read, I found that it was originally published years ago. I felt like it was drawn out at times— and because of the slow-moving areas and the Sci-Fi factor, I found my self skimming through a lot. I might enjoy it as a 2 hour movie, but not as a 400+ page book.

#Hunter #NetGalley

I read this back in 2000 but it is so hard to find non-PC storylines these days I read it again.

Nathaniel Hunter and his wolf-dog "Ghost" are only two of the characters I loved along with the action and adventure. I wish they wrote a few more like this these days! Good one!

Still fishing for a movie contract

I started reading "Hunter" thinking that it was a new book, destined for the Best Seller's list because it would appeal so strongly to particular demographics. The further I read, though, the stranger it seemed and I finally looked at the book's history. Crikey it was published in 1999! A tiny bit of searching revealed that this is a book by a famous action film writer who also churns out action novels. This 2018 edition is at least the third reissue. Funny thing though, it's not been made into a movie yet. That may be because it is so stupid.

I enjoy ridiculous stereotypes and so the beginning when we meet the strong silent Hunter, with his strong silent companion, a huge black wolf seemed pretty great. After a while, though, the story just got too silly and unbelievable and I had to quit.

Without copies of the earlier editions to compare (PLEASE don't send them to me) it's hard to know when the genetics was inserted, I don't think non-scientists were talking much about mitochondrial DNA in 1999, but maybe. In any case this book is crammed with genetic and biological nonsense. The book is long too, and so there is a lot of space to cram in more nonsense. On top of the nonsense we get battle scenes that are unreal – the team barricades themselves in with logs and then shoot the barricade to bits to try to kill the creature who was UNABLE TO GET THROUGH THE BARRICADE BEFORE THEY BLEW HOLES IN IT. We can presume that the radio kit was tested by the radio operator before the team set out, that's SOP. But somehow, the bad guy on the team secretly gets the radio away from the operator, opens it up, cuts a fine wire in the circuit, and reassembles it and restores it to the operator without anyone noticing. Then our hero solders the wire back together using chemicals from the med kit. Fortunately the flare doesn't fry any other wiring. (He could probably have used resin but that would not have been so dramatic.) A murder is ordered and committed within about an hour in downtown DC. The list of stupidities goes on and on.

But it is the really really really bad science at such really really really ridiculous length, that killed this book for me.

Mr. Huggins keeps hoping that someone will make this into a movie and possibly they will. I'm sorry.

Hunter was an interesting read. The main character, Hunter was an interesting guy, tho I would've liked it if the author wouldn't interrupt the flow of the story with how "awesome" Hunter was lol. Ghost, the wolf was great! We all need Ghost in our lives. The creature was a genetic mutation loose in the Alaskan wilderness reminded me a little of Predator, not a bad thing. Its ferocity and intelligence was really good, it kept me on my toes as Im reading it.
Overall a pretty good read.

Military Thriller -- Hunting for Homo Scimitar in the sparse Alaskan Landscape..
A gripping thriller that keeps you spellbound from the start to the finish. There is never a dull moment in the book as you read through the longish story that is compelling from the start. The author gives a lot of information on the military tactics and techniques used by the Army and the knowledge of the mountain side and the harsh terrain conjures breathtaking images of the action in the book. It is primed and set for being made into a movie, if not made so far. The vivid descriptions are beautiful for their brooding intensity and a feeling of horror that creeps in when you understand the event that is taking place. For a book of this size, there are a few minor places where some words are missing, maybe due to printer's devil. Additionally, in one place, the definition of pronation and supination in relation to tracking appeared to be contrary to the dictionary definition. But overall, a very exquisite and beautifully written thriller that keeps you glued to your seat from start to finish.

Written by James Byron Huggins, Hunter follows Hunter and Ghost, a man and his wolf, as they travel across the world to hunt down what Hunter has been told is a Siberian tiger.

If you want an adventure novel, with some blood, this would be a good choice. This is a great example of an adventure-in-the-jungle book that reminds me of... something. A generic story of someone hunting an animal, working for someone else, while the animal is also hunting them.

It wasn't my cup of tea. The writing is alright, but nothing memorable, and the supporting characters were terribly flat. The author tried to make up for this with their description of the scenery and the mood, but it just didn't work for me.

This was a novel that I honestly powered through to finish.

I originally read this book back in 1999. This is the second edition and it seems to have been revised extensively. It is much better. It is suspenseful and we'll written. I highly recommend this second edition.

While I liked the story, especially Ghost, it could really benefit from a good editor. I would have liked a more in-depth explanation of the science involved in making the monster and it would be nice if the science made a little sense.

I love the idea of Hunter, Famous tracker with a large wolf sidekick. He gets called in to track a monster, even though he doesn't not really want to to do it, he ends up going along with it for his friend. Hunt ensues, add in inept backup, an old man who shouldn't even be on this hunt and the love interest. Long, bloody scenes follow. I don't mind a lot of gore so this didn't bother me.

This book is very long. It could have been shortened considerably if the author lost the long drawn out explanations of every single move that Hunter made. Whatever he does it's described as being like an animal. Crouches like a tiger, attacks like a bear. We get it! He's cool! Best outdoors man ever! Stop telling us this in every other sentence!

Again, I still liked the overall story and If you you like manly man, adventure books you will probably like this.

Was this a 100% unique premise? No. But it was written with enough evocative twists and ghastly encounters to most assuredly keep me turning virtual pages. I love any horror story that takes place in the iciest far reaches of the world, as just the thought of being stranded there makes my blood run cold (pun intended). This is a "fun" book to read, and I highly recommend it!
