I was expecting more out of this book - the description sounded promising making it seem like this was going to be a really good witch/ghost tale.  I just wouldn't describe it as such.

House of Falling Embers is about a girl named Artemis, who lost her boyfriend, Aris, when she was 13.  This happens whole searching for the witch’s house from a story Artemis' grandpa told her.  On this one day Artemis and Aris come across a house that matches the description in the story and Aris gets trapped inside.  Artemis moves away in an attempt to "move on" but ends up moving back to the town nine years later when her boyfriend want’s to move back into his old house which used to be Aris' old house.  From here Artemis starts being "baited" to return to the woods and find the house again.

In my opinion, the book lagged a bit; I felt it took Artemis far too long to go into the woods, let alone search for the house.  For me, Artemis was also a bit annoying at times.  In general, the idea behind this book was great, it just fell a bit flat to me.

I absolutely could not put this book down. A word of warning, don't read this book at night while sitting next to a window where all sorts of creepy sounds can send you shooting upright because you're so immersed in the book. Actually, do read it that way. It makes it so much better when your heart is pounding in actual fear because you feel like you've been dumped right into the middle of the woods with Artemis and Aris.

House of Falling Embers sucked me in from page 1. It's like Monster House and Bridge to Terabithia got married and had a book of their own. It was creepy, nostalgic, and romantic all rolled into one fantastic bundle. Since I live in Tennessee, it was extra fun to read a book based on a landscape that I know so well. The descriptions were accurately outlined, all the way down to the types of animals you might hear in the woods just outside my door.

Artemis's character was the only one we truly get perspective of, but that worked out to the betterment of the book. While reading, I found myself constantly in a toss-up of debating whether Artemis had already gone crazy or if magic was real. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the ending well before I'm halfway through a book, but House of Falling Embers kept me wondering all the way up to the very end. I had my suspicions, but there was still some doubt. The remaining characters played their roles well, each one having a specific purpose within the pages, and we learn just enough about them to care about their well being. But Artemis remains the primary focus as she searches for some resolution about Aris.

House of Falling Embers uses memories to give you a lot of the backstory, and you'll spend some time going between past and present before everything finally lines up and anchors itself in the present. This is also something that I did not mind since each change brought out more of Aris's story. Since the conflict revolves around Aris, any memory that gave information on where we might go next was gobbled up with excitement.

The plot moved rapidly. Sometimes it was faster than I liked, skipping over sections and sometimes an entire day which almost made me feel that I was missing something. But the action that soon followed easily made me forget about the missing moments. There was probably nothing happening during those times anyway. It would have been mentioned if it was important, I just occasionally enjoy minute, droll details.

All in all, this was a great book, and I would happily recommend it for anyone who enjoys mystery, magic, romance...or any combination thereof. While there is what I would consider mild profanity - maybe a dozen or so words throughout the book - it was not enough to take away from the storyline. The romance is downplayed to the point of barely being evident, which is appropriate considering the emotional toil Artemis was under. House of Falling Embers was more about finding a lost love than it was a big display of romanticism.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley, however, I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Artemis was with her neighbor-boyfriend Aris looking for a house that a witch lives in. One day they find the house and Aris goes in but cannot get back out and then the house disappears.
Years later Artemis returns to live in the house that Aris lived in with her new boyfriend Link. She has a new job with a weird boss. She starts seeing and hearing stuff. She starts questioning her sanity.
This book is an excellent read for October. I loved this one. It has just the right amount of intrigue to keep you up all night reading.

This was an enjoyable read. It was creepy, but not as creepy as I was hoping it would be. It was a quick and easy read, but the end didn't live up to the story. I am not sure what I was hoping for but I definitely didn't get it.

I was very impressed with this book! It was much better than I thought it would be from the blurb. There was a mystery woven into the whole story that draws you in and doesn't let you go. Watch for the twist, it isn't anything you would ever suspect. I think that is what made it so enjoyable! Perfect read for the fall season!

Wow!!!! This book was a spine-tingling journey of suspense and fear. The main character Artemis is a young woman who at 13 years of age lost her best friend and first boyfriend Aris in a mysterious way in the woods near their homes. His disappearance has never been solved . and has haunted her for the last nine years. But she has tried to move on , moved away to go to college , has a long time boyfriend from her hometown .and has no plans to move back . Things change when her boyfriend has opportunities back home and they move back.
Artemis now finds herself back where the most traumatic thing in her life occurred . She slowly starts to unravel . Severe anxiety , hallucinations and nightmares. Are the things she sees real??? Is she losing touch with reality ???
Artemis is so real and is so easy to relate to , you really are worried for her the entire book.
She must face her fears of the woods and can she go in solve the mystery of the disappearance of Aris?
The plot twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat and keeps the book moving at a good pace . The ending was really good but had one hard to read portion , not every ending will be ALL good ., and that is OK.
I would recommend this book to anyone . It is a combination of YA and paranormal with a retelling of a fairy tale .

When a myth becomes reality Artemis must find the courage to face her fears or succumb to the nightmares that plague her.

Artemis is still grieving the loss of her first love Aris even after 9 years since his disappearance. Even though she is in a relationship with Link and works at a job she and her best friend Keegan talked about since growing up it doesn’t erase the memories of the night when she had lost her heart and sanity forever to the haunted house in the woods. No one believed her when she told them what happened on that fateful night, no one ever found the body of Aris. So everyone moved on with their lives, everyone but Artemis.

As I read this story I was fascinated by the events of Artemis and Aris’s past. I had the growing desire to solve the mystery surrounding his disappearance and as I delved deeper into the woods of the witch, the more I didn’t want to put this book down. But as much as I love the story I had started to grow tired of Artemis around halfway through the book. She was hard for me to relate to or feel sorry for as she seemed very self centered and uncaring of some people who surrounded her especially Link. I am used to strong female leads and Artemis is not that type. I kept reminding myself of how she is broken with grief and loss over what had happened to her and how the guilt ate away at her after all these years but it can be very frustrating. To the readers who are used to main characters that can rise up and become strong and independent after tragedies don’t count on Artemis who uses her boyfriend and best friend as a crutch ever since high school.

However I feel about Artemis, the story is so magically crafted and original that I read it through until the very end to have my curiosity answered for. And I was not disappointed.

Artemis has a problem. She's just moved back into the home where her teenaged boyfriend lived and disappeared. Anis rolls the after of the house in the woods but no one believes her. Apparitions began to appear urging Artemis to go back into the woods. Will she find the courage in time? This was a very enjoyable read. Some of the cookies were in-your-face but that didn't take away from the book as a whole.

Artemis and Aris are soulmates. They may only be young teenagers but they belong together. They love telling each other stories about the woods behind their homes, and there is one particular story that really captures their imagination. It is a story told to Artemis by her Grandfather, about a witch who was run out of town by locals. It is said that the witch escaped to the woods with her cat where she built a new home. But the locals were still unhappy that the witch wasn't completely gone from their lives and they tried to burn down her new home in the woods and make the witch disappear once and for all. But it wasn't the witch who disappeared. Artemis and Aris become obsessed with the story of the witch in the woods and spend a lot of their time together trying to find the house. One day they do. After nine years Artemis moves back to the very street where she had lived as a teen. She feared that moving back and the proximity of the woods where terrible things happened nine year earlier would be too much for her to handle, and she was right.

From the blurb I thought this was going to be an adult creepy haunted house mystery, but it actually reads more like young adult fiction with lots of talk about clothes and hairstyles and relationship drama. Artemis is a good character, and I really did feel for her and the awful situation she was in, but her constant weeping got on my nerves after a while.

This is a quick and easy read, and will probably be enjoyed by many (younger?) readers, but ultimately it didn't live up to my expectations.

Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours, for the arc of this book.
I enjoyed this story, it held me from beginning to end, I did think that Fenton was messing with Artemis’s mind and that was going to be the twist, but no.
For once I was pleased for a happy ending, I just wish it had gone into a bit more detail on how everyone reacted.
But overall a really good read.

This book was provided to me by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
"One upon a time there was a witch. She was a kind witch but that didn't matter. The people were afraid, and fear often turns to hatred."
Well when you start a book description like that, you sure have me hooked.
When Artemis returns back to her hometown for her boyfriend Link, she is convinced that it was a bad idea. She should have stayed away like she planned but now that she is back, she has to deal with being a somehow of a local figure, Her weird boss Fenton, whom she describes as "Greek god of judgement and humiliation" and that things are not perfect with her loving boyfriend, but most importantly she realises that she needs a closure.
Even though nine years have past, she still feels that a part of her is still lost. Not just a part but a friend, a soulmate lost deep down in the woods where they used to wander together.
Once upon a time he was there but then he vanished. Back then she was scared & didn't go after him, but now as she is overcomed with guilt & saddness that she can't even say his own name outload. She realises that she can't get rid of the burned creature chasing her nor get a closure, unless she overcomes her fear or at least try.
The main character Artemis is our gate to that paranormal world so unless you emphasize with her, you would lose interest in the story and this is where the book shines, Artemis is not written as a knight in a shinning armor who is fearless and has everything figured out, No we see her scared, broken and struggling to meet everyone's expectations. Which is truly refreshing and kept me rooting for her.
And as a person who isn't easily scared, well i got scared and let's leave it at that.
I loved the twists & the characters are well written. The final chapter is a bit rushed but it didn't spoil my enjoyment at all.
By the way, this book have some of the weirdest but also coolest characters' names i have ever read.

I requested this on Netgalley and was approved so thank you to Krystal, The Narcissistic Rose and Netgalley!

Im going to begin this review by saying that I personally did not enjoy this book HOWEVER I definitely think it is a book that a lot of people will enjoy so if the synopsis intrigues you, definitely give it a chance!

The cover was what really drew me in, it looks so creepy and eerie and I love the colour scheme and it definitely gave me halloween feels. The atmosphere whilst reading it was really cool too, I definitely felt the eerie presence and the overcast skies.

I found the main character difficult to relate too, I would have liked to learn more about her but her whole life was revolving around this one traumatic event and you never really get to know her. I completely understand that the traumatic event is the point of this book but at the same time I feel I would have enjoyed it more, had we been given some more depth to Artemis.

Her relationship with Link was interesting, there were some aspects I found quite realistic but he was jealous and never trusted her. I LOVED the relationship between Artemis and Keegan, it was a very supportive and healthy friendship and I loved how they trusted each other. Fenton was another very interesting character and I enjoyed his story. The therapist and Nova were also very interesting characters, I just wish that there was more explanation about what is revealed about them. I feel that it was brushed over and it would have been so much more interesting to understand more about it.

The plot started off very slow, I was interested but only because I was anticipating what was too come, the beginning itself I found myself easily distracted. I also thought a lot of the plot was very predictable but I really liked the ending. I liked the truth about the house and how its not what you think and when the whole situation was revealed I was very hooked. I liked how the ending cut off a few things in a healthy way and how lots of things were resolved.

Overall I didn't really enjoy this book but I think that some people will absolutely love it, so definitely give it a try!

This was a great little book! I thoroughly enjoyed it - the author outdid herself on several occasions. I would say this book is not just YA, but is suitable for a general adult audiences, and that's a commendation. It's hard to bridge the reader audience gap like that. Whilst I feel it's still accessible for ya people, it's also got some very deft layering that adults with a wider world experience will feel connected to.
More specifically, how the protag Artemis deals with trauma. She has a massive traumatic event in her past, and the book forces her to deal with it. I felt the authors descriptions of Artemis falling apart, having panic attacks, sleep terrors, becoming irritable and unresponsive in daytime, and et cetera, were bang on the money. This is real. This is how trauma can trigger people. I commend the author for her realistic description of it, it really added to the tension in the book.
The other item of note was the tension. It built deliciously, something I expect only from skilled horror writers, but I got that tightening curdling feeling in my stomach as I read, my heartbeat increased, because although the author lays it out what generally is gonna happen, *how* it happens causes the tension. Loved it!
The characters were believable (although I think Artemis is too much of a mouthful not to have a nickname - my only criticism), well rounded and I cared about them.
Highly recommended - finished this in one sitting and actually had to watch cute YouTube videos after because I was scared I'd have nightmares!
