Ghost's STORY! Ever since I read about him in the first book I've always wanted him to have his own story. And we finally do! I am so excited about this book.

Now, here's the thing...you have to understand Sidney Bell's writing style. It's crafted slowly and carefully. This is not a fast developing story because the characters are complex with a WIDE RANGE of issues. Ghost is also one of them (hence his time in Woodbury).

I've read the previous two books and loved them just the same. I appreciate the time it takes for Ghost to get his story out. That being said the scenes between Ghost and Duncan were a little lacking for me. Granted, as a reader you can interpret that as the intimacy and intensity being in the character dynamics of the relationship itself. The characters in the series don't always end up with people you think they should. They sometimes end up with people that on the surface don't make sense, which in a way is a different kind of connectedness than the physical.

Either way, I was thrilled with this title and Sidney's work as per usual.

So…this review may be long, so I will start with this – Sidney Bell is a brilliant writer. And I don’t say that often or lightly. After finishing this series, I immediate went to Amazon to buy her other book to read which I again don’t do often (I can probably list the 3 or 4 authors I’ve done this with).

I will also mention that this is not a standalone. The series should be read in order.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way I can tell you that I didn’t want to read this book. After reading the first two books, I didn’t really like Ghost. And YES, I know his childhood which really, has been until right now since he’s still just 20, has been awful. And YES, I know that the personas he wears and acts he performs are masks and protections, so people won’t get close and can’t hurt him or can hurt him less. But I still don’t like him, and I wanted to be able to finish this series and still be pouting in the corner not liking him. But I KNEW Ms. Bell was going to force the issue; so, I waited to read this book until I had my ‘I can hold a grudge longer than you can write a brilliant character’ bad attitude firmly in place.

I made it 14% into the book.

I can think of one other time I felt that type of bone deep, soul-aching pain for a character. And we still didn’t know his history yet. Honestly, even after finishing the book we don’t know all of it and I’m glad for it.

I can admit when I’m wrong (which I know will shock some people) and this is one of those times – Ghost is a remarkably complex and yes, now likeable, character. He is surprisingly entertaining. His quips in the first two books with Tobias and Church usually irritated me but when he banters with Duncan he’s quite amusing. And speaking of Duncan, there may not be a better equipped person to handle Ghost on the planet. He just always did the right thing and somehow knew what Ghost always needed. I think he missed his calling in SVU. He’s a bit of a mess when Ghost meets him but he’s a damn good guy. Sullivan is still my favorite character of the series, but Duncan is a VERY close second.

The word soulmate doesn’t work for either of these guys, but they were certainly destined for each other and no one else will work for the other. They balance each other. When one is suffering or struggling, the other is there to support, protect and strengthen the other.

Ghost’s healing process is arduous. Had it not been, I would have put my kindle down and never read another word this author wrote. She forced me to not only LIKE Ghost but RESPECT him and yeah, I’m still smarting over that one.

There were a couple of surprises as the arc with the Russian’s is wrapped up. And there are short appearances by Tobias, Church and Sullivan.

In case it wasn’t obvious, this is an ABSOLUTE must read book and series.

Rough Trade by Sidney Bell is the conclusion to her trilogy and her m/m romantic suspense series. I cannot wait to see what else she writes! There isn’t a ton in the LGBTQIA+ romantic suspense area and it’s a category I enjoy quite a bit. Bell writes intense characters who have a lot of depth and layers to them. I had been dying to find out Ghost’s motivations for his actions and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I’d highly recommend this whole series. 4.5 stars.

This book has a little of everything for everyone, and a troupe we all love, enemies to lovers. While Rook and Ghost aren't really enemies, they are both on opposites side of the law. And crime fighters like Rook have a hard time reconciling being with someone with a shady past, like Ghost. It's also a slow burn, hundreds of little things that add up.

Ghost has had a rough start and skewed sense of life due to his past. And Rook has the ability to focus on the real things that matter and not just labels.

While this book is stand alone, you defiantly miss a lot of the story if you don't read the other books, and can be a little hard to get into. I had not when I read this one, but I was still able to follow the story and get into everything. But if you like this one, you will probably be like me and go back and read the others.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
If it’s even possible, this third book is even darker and more grim than the first two. It is also more of an action/suspense story than the previous books. Ghost has been a slightly terrifying enigma through Church and Tobias’ books and he spends most of his own story running from corrupt cops and the sadistic matriarch of an organised crime family. Ghost’s memories of the Woodbury institution will be familiar to readers, but Ghost’s life has been even bleaker than the other boys.

Ghost’s very unlikely partner through this story is Duncan Rook, a disgraced and incorruptible cop. In many ways, Rook is a complete foil for Ghost. He is huge and brutish where Ghost is beautiful and elfin. Rook is solid and steady, and Ghost actually wants to trust him.

The action in this story is exciting and the book moves quickly. Later in the story, Ghost’s journey through therapy and self-discovery is slower. This is a difficult read. The subject matter is brutal, and some scenes will trigger many readers. I’m not sure I enjoyed the story, but I did appreciate it. The writing in this series gets stronger with every book and I loved the strong female characters who support Ghost and Rook in this book.

Really loved this conclusion to the series! I wasn't too sure about Ghost when I started it because I'll be honest: I didn't really like him that much. But this book completely changed my opinion.

This was an incredibly engaging story, I wasn't sure for the first chapter or 2, but then I was hooked and couldn't put it down as I was way too invested in Ghost and his plight and finding out what was going to happen. Ghost, what a sweet tortured young man he was, my heart ached for him and what he'd been through, and still he remained strong whilst being emotionally broken and his self esteem fragile. And what to say about Duncan Rook who takes on Ghost and his troubles because his friend and ex police partner asks him to. I fell for Duncan, he was so amazing with Ghost and I loved watching the relationship between them develop into something more than police officer out to do the right thing and prostitute in trouble. This was I felt, such a beautiful romance that developed over the time they worked together, both learning so much about themselves in the process. The action and twists in this book just kept right on coming the whole way and I really had no idea how it was all going to turn out, I was definitely hoping for a HEA for these two main characters. There's definitely a need for trigger warnings, prostitution, rape, child abuse, they are however handled exceptionally well by the author.

I had no idea it was part of a series and other than now wanting to read the first 2 books and learn more about the secondary characters, I feel it stood well as a standalone novel.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin-Carina Press for a copy in return for an honest review.

ENG- So well well well… well Not having read the first two volumes, I did not know what to expect. However I really liked this novel and I’m pretty tempted to read the first two.

The pen of the author is really catchy and we easily get into the story. I really like the character of Ghost who is really special but the author gives us a very strong character and very addictive.
I liked his relationship with Duncan and as often these characters seem really opposed but go so well together.

I liked the flashback of the beginning of the novel that really allowed me to understand the complex character of Ghost. I admit that I may have liked a few more scenes of sex but we can not deny the sexual tension between the two characters .. so it goes.
I really liked what the author did about Ghost and especially I loved the epilogue at the end.

In summary, a good series that ends rather well.

When I first read Loose Cannon and met Ghost in its pages, I fell in love with that character and begged for Ghost to get his own book. In the 2nd book of this trilogy, we instead got Tobias' story, and there was very little of Ghost in that book. And then finally, book 3 arrived, and it was all about Ghost.

I went in knowing that I would likely find heartbreak within, that I would be on the edge of my seat more often than not, and that finding out Ghost's true backstory would be painful.

I wasn't wrong.

But I wasn't ready for the magic of Duncan Rook. I wasn't ready for the man who would finally give Ghost a safe haven, who would see the man behind the rentboy mask, who would take the time to tamper the fight or flight response that has kept Ghost alive for so long.

This book was everything I had hoped for, and then some. I'm not going to tell you the plot - you should read this so you can find out for yourself - but I will tell you that this book is perfect and exactly how it should be, and there's not a single thing I would change about it. It gets five shiny stars, because that's all I can give here, but I would give it more if I could.

What struck me most about this book is how little sex there's in it. Stay with me here, so I can explain... because you may have expected there to be a lot of hot and heavy stuff happening, seeing how this is Ghost, but I can tell you that the relationship between Duncan and Ghost isn't based on sex. Nor is there any kind of physical relationship for a long while. And that's how it had to be. There's a scene that made me cry my eyes out, because... no. You read this yourself. I was moved to tears more than once, because Duncan, while not perfect as a character (yeah, he has flaws too), was perfect for Ghost. He understood him. He watched him and his reactions so carefully, so closely, and then adjusted his actions accordingly. He learned who Ghost truly is, not the face he presents to most of the people in his life.

And Ghost, OMG. Ghost, despite his upbringing, despite the abuse he's suffered (oh how I cried), despite the life he's led so far, only relying on himself, knowing that he can't trust anyone... Ghost learns to trust Duncan. It's slow, so slow, but as time passes, and as Duncan passes test after test, Ghost learns to trust. And the person that emerges from behind the mile-high walls he's built around himself - gah. I can't even tell you what that did to me.

So, this book. Read it. You have to read the other two first, because this isn't a standalone, and the trilogy must be read in order. But read it, you must.

Oh Ghost... I'm always sad to see a series end, but it was inevitable. After all, there were only three boys and the only one that this series could possibly end with was Ghost. Rough Trade provided a perfect balance in what seemed like impossible odds against both Ghost and Duncan....

Readers who have followed the Woodbury Boys have seen many sides of Ghost, but even those who had known him the longest couldn't really say that the knew him. His friends loved him, worried about him and would pretty much do anything for him, if he'd let them. He kept his distance on purpose. He loved his friends too, but he didn't really like knowing that they knew it. He even gave himself excuses for doing the things that he did for them. He depended on no one but himself and he wanted to keep it that way. He also didn't care about what other people thought about him, until Duncan.

I, like a lot of other readers, wondered who Sidney Bell could possibly pair Ghost with and Duncan was definitely not what I expected. He was perfect though. The dynamic between Duncan and Ghost was crazy and ironically fun considering that they were basically on the run from the beginning of Rough Trade. Ghost's "logic" about right and wrong and skirting the law drove Duncan nuts. On the flip side, for reasons that not even Ghost understood, he wanted to be "good" and not disappoint Duncan and that drove ghost nuts. The attraction that Duncan felt for Ghost and his determination to ignore it at all costs kept the tension thrumming between them. Ghost had no idea how to deal with that determination and Ghost being well... Ghost, considered it a challenge.

Aside from the romantic tension flowing between Ghost and Duncan, there was a lot going on in Rough Trade. They were on the run from two very powerful people in powerful positions. The odds were definitely against them and they had to find a way to rely on others while still trying to keep them safe. That alone kept the pages turning. Readers also learned a lot about Ghost's past and none of it was easy.

I can't pick my favorite in this series. From the time I picked up Loose Cannon I was hooked and couldn't wait for Hard Line. Rough Trade brought everything to a satisfying end and is just one of the reasons why Woodbury Boys has been added to my list of favorite series.

I honestly didn't think this book would be able to comprehensively pull together all the suspense elements of the first two into a believable and cohesive ending.

But it really does, and not only that, it also brings a unique love story which never once follows the traditional path and yet still manages to be truly romantic and full of emotional growth.

It also manages to make me have feelings for two of the bad guys - or bad women in this instance, who were both as trapped in a situation out of their control as Ghost and Duncan were.

I wasn't expecting things to go down like they did but there was some clever narrative play which ultimately drew out the most effective and truthful ending for all parties involved.

The romance itself is a quiet, unobtrusive one, it's not hot and sexy, it's built up of small things, of trust, of movie marathons and a desire to want someone else's happiness to come first.

There couldn't, imho, have been any other way for things to go given Ghost's lifetime of experience with sex as a weapon and as an abuse, even four years later in the epilogue I think it was still fitting that the reader's gaze remained external and not in the bed with them.

Truly a wonderful example in this genre and a fitting conclusion to the series as a whole.

ARC received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was difficult for me to get into. The timeline at the beginning was throwing me off because it seemed that every time I started to get into the story the year would suddenly end.

I could not figure out who Ghost was going to "fall in love" with and then all of a sudden the book drastically changed and I was just entirely confused. Perhaps if I read the other two books I would have been prepared for what was to come, but for me this book just didn't work.

The writing style of the author just was not my cup of tea, but I did like the topics that the author delved into. And honestly, the constant descriptions were unnecessary and annoying. We know what Ghost does to survive and we are well aware of Duncan's size. I understand why those two factors were important to the story, but I didn't need to be reminded every other sentence. And while I didn't root for anyone in this book as I found all the characters to be extremely unlikable, the friendships of the characters were beautiful to read about.

This was my first book by Sidney Bell and the first in the series that I'm reading. Overall I wasn't into the story that much. I just didn't gel that much with the two leads. The writing and the pace of the book was very good though. I hope to read more books from Sidney Bell in the future.
Thanks Netgalley and Publisher for this ARC. The thoughts and opinions are all my own.

Omg Okay so I didn't read the other 2 books in this series. Now this book can be read as a standalone, but you can tell it's part of a series. I felt like I missed some "getting to know" Ghost moments by not reading the first two books. Still it didn't take me long to fall in love with Ghost. My heart broke for him and all his went through. Some of the things in this book were ugly, raw, and hard to read. Selling sex to survive as a teen, the hunger, abuse, betrayal, just everything!!! It tore my heart out. Ghost had dark issues and I love that the author didn't gloss over them. Duncan took a little longer to warm up to for me, but in the end I loved him too. Not as much as Ghost but..... Duncan and Ghost had a really slow burn relationship. Which was understandable with trust issues and past demons. Plus it really gave depth to Duncan and Ghost's love. I did however take a star off because I would have liked a little more steam between them. Just a tad! Still this book was a great and emotional read with lots of action. This was my first time reading anything by Sidney Bell but it won't be my last. I plan on going back and reading the first two books in this series too.

I’m sure I’ve probably said this any number of times over the years, but sometimes the hardest part of writing a review is starting it. And sometimes the hardest reviews to write are for the books I love, because sometimes words are inadequate to the job of enumerating and articulating all the reasons why I loved it.

For everyone who’s been following this series and has waited patiently (or not) for this book, I can say that it’s everything I wanted, and more. When an author names a character Ghost, you’ve got to know there’s going to be some backstory to unpack. You also know that backstory isn’t going to be without some landmines embedded within its emotional landscape. While each of the Woodbury Boys books focuses on a different Boy—Church and Tobias coming first—I wouldn’t necessarily recommend reading Rough Trade as a standalone. There is too much to Ghost to attempt to embrace him without getting glimpses along the way of who he is to Church and Tobias: the kid who doesn’t do friendship (allegedly), who doesn’t have family, who lives and nearly dies by the streets, who has sex for money, who’s had every shred of innocence stolen from him to the point that it damaged him psychologically and emotionally. It left him a feral human whose social structure consists of mimicking certain traits and behaviors in order to appear as if he’s living while he’s fighting to survive a life he doesn’t seem sure is more than a figment of some vague reality. Ghost is like a physical scar in a wounded existence—he alone is evidence he has survived, but he has never healed (the likelihood he ever will, entirely, is minimal); he lives on a knife’s edge, literally and figuratively, and it’s the man who finally makes him want to try that defines this story so beautifully. Duncan Rook is a cop. A massive wall of man. And, he’s the last person I’d have figured would become an integral cog in Ghost’s machine. After all, not a single cop has ever done right by Ghost before, but Sidney Bell not only made it so, she made that single detail significant. Watching Ghost unravel before the solid reliability of the man who, it seems, is the first person to not only be unwaveringly honest with him but who also listens to Ghost and does what he asks, is a substantial foundation upon which to begin building their relationship.

One of the things I admire so much about Sidney Bell’s growing body of work is not only the absolute ease with which I sink into her books, but the way she weaves the relationships between her characters into the more significant aim of the storyline; it never ceases to impress me and in this case, the overall imperative is to make the world safe enough for Ghost to stop running. To do that, it means taking down a corrupt cop and a Russian mob boss first, not to mention him facing his past. The action and suspense along the way is paced to keep readers on the edge while the slow build of Ghost and Rook’s relationship unfolds as a grim reminder that Ghost is a shell wrapped around a fractured and fragmented inscape. So even after the exterior threat is eliminated, it’s the threat from what’s going on inside Ghost’s head that nearly wrecks everything he could have with Rook.

Bell’s work is beautifully character driven; her characters are flawed and all the more compelling for it, and I fall for them every. single. time. Ghost and Rook are not only a bit damaged, but they are strong and tenacious too, and I was so taken in by them. Rough Trade is a gorgeous addition to this series of books. It’s every bit as gut-wrenching as I expected Ghost’s story would be, but through the painful journey of him becoming ‘real’, there is the payoff in the end of seeing him reach the starting point of a life he never even knew he could want, let alone have.

I’d wager anyone who has read the Woodbury Boys series has been anticipating Ghost’s story and Rough Trade proves the wait was more than worth it. Miss Bell again smoothly blends hurt/comfort and suspense to create a story that drew me in from the first chapter.

Rough Trade offered an in depth look into Ghost’s life following his escape from the clutches of a dirty cop and the punishing reach of a crime family’s matriarch, and in the midst slowly reveals his past and innermost thoughts. While trying to escape the perils of his previous associations, Ghost finds himself involved with a cop currently on medical leave who’s struggling in his own way. In the two books leading up to Rough Trade, I’d never have anticipated Duncan being Ghost’s guy. The relationship between these two men was deliciously different from what I expected, making it that much more memorable. I loved that the author took the time to develop Ghost and Duncan individually before cementing them as a couple. The slow burn romance reflected Ghost’s sorted past and hesitant embrace of his future, proving yet again that Miss Bell stays true to her characters in all facets of their lives rather than simply when the angst is a convenient plot point. I always knew this story would be a good one, but I was still surprised just how good it was. The vulnerability of Ghost was tangible and his story heartbreaking but powerful in its strength.

Per usual, the action and suspense scenes of Rough Trade were well-detailed, full of emotion, and complete with a few twists, keeping me fixated on the story and desperate to see how it all would unfold. If you’re a fan of hurt/comfort romances at all and love to see characters who’ve been dealt a difficult hand rise above and find their happy ending, the Woodbury Boys series is a can’t miss and Rough Trade was the perfect cap to this trio of incredible books.

Though this book is part of a series, I felt it read well as a standalone. I also thoroughly enjoyed this story.
While it was on the side of dramatic I found it to be believable. By that I mean Ghost's character. I thought he was written very well. His "ailments" with his severe PTSD, all written very well and very believable. I adored him, he was slick and sassy and the way you'd picture a street kid who's come along this far in life already to be.
He sort of, kind of, reminded me of Fox from the Infected Series by Andrea Speed. That's a good thing, he's another prostitute I had hella respect for.

I also enjoyed Rook. He was a huge teddy bear, even though he was gruff on the outside.
He handled Ghost's "quirks" with the utmost patience, I'm not quite sure how he did it. Ghost did things just to jab at him to keep him at Bay, but it didn't seem to work, Duncan Rook saw right through it all.

The development between these two was sweet, you know, because of all the quirks and patience.

I'm glad Ghost's real name finally got dropped towards the end there, it was going to drive me mad had it not been mentioned.

3.5 Stars. I believe this would have been a solid 4 star read if I had read the 2 previous books but I jumped into this one not realizing it was a #3 (totally my fault for not paying attention). The book referenced some things that happened in the previous books but now so much that I ever felt lost. So while I'm sure it's more enjoyable to read all the books in order you can enjoy this one without reading the first two.

The one thing about this book that wasn't great was the pacing. It was pretty slow and I put it down and came back to it several times. However, the characters are so engrossing and unique that no matter how slow the book progressed I kept coming back because I had to know what happened. Both Duncan and Ghost are interesting and completely different and yet they worked together. This is a VERY slow burn romance but given Ghost's past which is traumatic it made complete sense. There isn't much heat or sex in this book either but again it fit Ghost's character and I would have had a hard time believing anything else. I loved the growth that Ghost goes through in this book and I hurt for him as we learned more about his past. I loved Duncan's patience and understanding when it came to Ghost and I understood his frustrations. There were some great action scenes interspersed throughout the book. I got a bit caught up in trying to figure out how Ghost and Duncan were going to get him out of the situation he found himself in. I also loved that that part was resolved around the 75% mark and the end of the book focused on the relationship between Duncan and Ghost and also Ghost trying to figure out what was next for him and how to get there. I understood Duncan's reaction to Ghost (can't say much more than that without spoiling it) and I loved that Ghost didn't give up. Too many times I think characters don't have to grovel when they screw up but in this book it was perfect.

So there were a ton of things I liked about this book but the pacing and sometimes repetitive nature of some scenes put it at a 3.5 rating for me.

To start this off, this story would've probably had a bigger impact if I had read the first two books before this one. I still felt like this book had enough background to stand well on its own. The story centers around Ghost, a guy that has survived traumatic experiences that would break the minds of many, and Duncan Rook, a retired and justice bound cop with a severe medical injury that believes that people are made of the sum of their choices. The summary was too good to pass up and I never regretted reading this book ever since. The dynamic and dialogue between Ghost and Rook is absolutely hilarious. Ghost's charisma and laid-back personality mixes with Rook's good two shoes persona to make the most humorous and loving chemistry between them.
If you don't like books that are centered around a slow burn then you're gonna hate this book. This has the most slow-burn romance that I've ever read and I greatly enjoyed it. The fact that the characters had so many layers and areas to learn and discover made the journey worth it. There wasn't too much sex which supported what the story was shooting for. Ghost had always been a prostitute and the scene where Ghost slides onto Duncan's lap plus the aftermath broke my heart.
The action was pretty awesome too. Ghost and Duncan versus the Russian mafia and mama. The descriptions and events left me unable to put the book down. It had the right amount of breath taking action and slow burn romance. Nothing was overdone.
Book 3 has alot of valuable lesson sprinkled throughout.
Duncan shrugged, "As we keep living, as we take more hits, the hills we're willing to die on change. That's all".
Not only did this book provide an entertaining and soul crushing slow burn romance between two unlikely people, this book also taught me thought provoking philosophies that make me want to reevaluate my life. Wow, what a book.
