This is one of my favorite books of the year. Parenting books too often focus on white motherhood and the ways we raise our children to be fragile in society. Dani McClain is now an instant-buy author for me because of her nuanced view of race, social justice, and mixing cultural values and moral ethic into her parenting. I love the wave of books this year that view motherhood through a non-white lens, and I hope to see more of them in the future.

This is a definitive work in the subject of a Black motherhood. It fuses personal experience, praxis/philosophy, and reporting and it’s masterfully organized and well-written.
