I do enjoy a badass historical heroine, and Katherine Wright definitely fits the bill. Surgeon, smuggler, war veteran--Katherine just wants to get her family safely away from the dangerous smuggling trade in Dover. But she gets pulled in for one last job (isn't that always the way?), and it's the riskiest yet. Harland Hayward is a doctor and a lord with secrets of his own. The two have to work together to pull off a harrowing heist and try to save some lives along the way, while trying to avoid their mutual admiration and attraction.

This was a delightful read--fast-paced, satisfying, with a dose of pathos.

This story was engaging and had many twists and turns keeping me engaged to the end. I rooted for Hayward to win over Katherine’s heart from the moment they met in an unexpected circumstance. The path to true love never runs easy, especially in this case. I received an advanced reader copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

I LOVED this book. It was the best book I’ve read in a long time! It focuses on Katherine, a female surgeon and Lord Hayward, also a surgeon. Katherine is a fierce heroine! And Hayward everything a hero should be. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC!

I've read and enjoyed Ms. Bowen's books in the past and I did enjoy "A Rogue by Night" even though I did think that Katherine Wright's being called a surgeon by Baron Harland Hayward, a physician himself, was a bit of a stretch. Ms. Wright might have gotten field experience during the war, but males of the Regency period would not have even considered a woman a qualified surgeon. That issue aside, I did like that Katherine was an independent and smart woman. She handles herself well throughout the book.

Harland was a good guy although he would have been an anomaly of his time. As a nobleman, his career as a physician would have been looked upon by his peers as unseemly. While both of these issues would not have tolerated in the time period, I read through the end and was happy that both Harland and Katherine got their happy ending.

This was a beautifully written historical romance. The author writes with almost poetic, detailed descriptions. I was impressed and in love with Kate. A strong, intelligent and vibrant character. She doesn't once lose her integrity or drive. She protects her brother and her father with such incredible bravery and wisdom. She needed a strong, capable and supportive partner. The author gifted her Harland, the hero.
I loved that the author made the hero also a surgeon, a war veteran and a smuggler. Identical to her experience therefore qualified to understand and love her best. Enjoyed the pace of the novel and felt entrapped within the intrigue and espianage. The hero and the heroine were perfectly suited for the obstacles they encountered.
I just loved that in the end he doesn't leave her and sacrifices everything to ensure her safety as she does him. Novel was perfect.

I have enjoyed this whole series so I couldn't wait to get Harland's story. He has always been a part of the previous novels, and you knew he was up to something but this book finally lays out why Harland has been so mysterious and what extent he is going to for his family. Everything is going smoothly (or as smoothly as it can) until he meets Kate, a fellow surgeon and a smart strong heroine for our hero. I enjoyed the interaction between these two and loved the resolution on this story arc that has been behind the scenes for the last few books. I would recommend this book and the others. I do think it helps and increases the enjoyment when you read the books in order. My only complaint with this book (and the reason I tool away 1 star) is the lack of humor the other books in the series delivered on. I missed all the students and the quirky aunts. There was only a small amount. So, while I liked this book moved around a bit with the setting, I wish we had a little more at the school. Overall another excellent read by Kelly Bowen!

The third book in Kelly Bowen’s Devils of Dover trilogy, A Rogue By Night is a great way to finish the series. Katherine is a strong female character, a woman with more medical knowledge than most doctors back then. Lord Harland is a free-thinking doctor who accepts Katherine for whom she is. Unbeknownst to each other, they are both involved in smuggling to help their families. I always enjoy Kelly Bowen’s stories! I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

A Rogue by Night is book 3 in the Devil’s of Dover series by Kelly Bowen. I have to say that I truly feel that I have uncovered a precious jewel in Ms. Bowen’s writing. She carried me away to another world. I could smell the sea and taste its saltiness on my lips. I could hear the report of a gun and I could feel the cold bite of the bay’s water as the heroine dove into it. Every word is precise and calculated to carry her reader into another world. At times I laughed out loud and then cried my way through this story. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series. Bravo Ms Bowen, bravo.

I received this ARC in exchange for a review.
Kelly Bowen has become one of my "go-to" authors for historical romance. She has not disappointed in this latest story! Her characters are real, her stories are exciting and keep you engaged. Harland and Katherine are characters that have you invested. Katherine is a strong female lead and Harland is a strong, but not over the top H. I read this book late into the night because it was hard to put down. I am hoping that there will be another book in this series about Katherine's brother Matthew Wright. Highly recommend entire series.

I know some will be skeptical of a 5 star review from an ARC, but I assure you this is my honest opinion.

Smuggling is a way of life on the coast but it doesn’t involve a peer of the realm who is also a doctor. Katherine’s family has been involved with smuggling all her life. It is what brings the two together, as well as their love of medicine. Each has past scars that need to be healed, but they do find their HEA.
I received annARC of this book.

Lord Harland Hayward wears many hats. He's a baron and a doctor but also moonlights as a smuggler at night. His role as a doctor gives him legitimate excuses to pop up in odd places and times when he's bringing in illegal cargo. He's done what he must to save his family's finances but even though his coffers are now full and the family business is thriving, he's stuck in a 20 year contract with a London crime lord known as King with no way out.

Katherine Wright grew up in a family of smugglers and is dismayed when she returns to Dover after years of working as a field surgeon to find her father and brother once again working for a smuggler. When her brother is shot, she convinces them to move and start anew somewhere else, but they insist on honoring their last contract first. Since her brother is injured and her father is in poor health, Katherine is forced right back into the vicious world she left behind and straight into the path of Lord Strathmore.

Katherine can't help but be snarky with the mysterious lord doctor and subsequently even more suspicious when he still continues to be nice to her despite her vitriol. She's been burned before and now carries strong prejudices against the titled and privileged. She makes the widowed Harland feel things he'd rather not after his disastrous marriage and it soon becomes apparent that these feelings are mutual. Even as he needs her help with his latest smuggling assignment, Harland is determined to keep Katherine safe. As much as she longs to leave the smuggling life behind, Katherine knows she has the skills to help Harland and that it would be unforgivably selfish not to. This last job will give her enough money for her family to move and start over so it's worth it, but she's still full of betrayal-fueled hatred and has nothing left to give Harland romantically, despite the temptation he poses. But Harland knows what that emptiness is like so he's not willing to give up the not-wholly-welcome feelings Katherine is reigniting in him.

This premise was quite unique and provided a good bit of depth for both main characters. Despite Katherine's hatefulness, I didn't dislike her (which would normally be the case), likely because she was willing to communicate with Harland about her reasons for such behavior, she was big enough to apologize, and she showed growth and development. This one had some good suspense, as well as some steamy goodness and it was very well-written and enjoyable all around.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed more the story than the romance. The main characters are both interesting and well drawn out, however, the heroine is bleak and stoic. Her demeanor does not adhere well to the romance and I didn't find her overally likeable or cared if she found her HEA.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is exactly why Kelly Bowen is on my auto-buy list. The hero and heroine are unconventional, but not so unconventional that their characters seem unrealistic for the historical setting. Katherine is the shrewd daughter of a smuggler who has acquired and honed medical expertise not commonly found in a woman. Harland is a titled lord who rescued his family from the brink of financial ruin and is now bound in a web of obligation he can't escape. Sweat, stealth and blood throw them together in a desperate gamble. Their passion is quickly ignited and exquisitely wrought. This was an exceptional, five-star read.

as with the other two Devils of Dover books - this book features a woman beyond her time, but unlike the other books she is joined with a very accepting and forward thinking male. I love books with beta heroes. Truly - is there anything better than a man who isn't threatened by a woman and lets her stand up and be herself? In this book - not only does Katherine save the day but she does it in pants while holding the respect of all the otehr males around her. Its no wonder Harland immediately falls for her.

This book was a great conclusion to this small triology. I love reading about Kelly Bowen's enlightened heroines and their feminist challenges to the patriarchy. They aren't necessarily realistic to the time - but I am willing to suspend my disbelief and read about them anyway.

Although I have not had the opportunity to read books one an two in the series I got bit confused with time period while reading this story. With that being said, I thought the story as a nice read for a Kelly Bowen novel.

It takes place in Dover and Baron Harland Hayward, a doctor meets Katherine, a midwife when a smuggling operation goes bad with her brother Matthew. There were tense moments and danger that started the onset of romance for the H/h. The story was well-written and I enjoyed it.

I will have to read the priors in this series to compare the writing style. Thought it could have been a lot better.

I received this ARC for a fair and honest review.

3-Stars🌟.

Kelly Bowen takes the third book up a notch in her Devils of Dover series. I enjoyed the first two in this series, but A Rogue by Night is my favourite of the three. Dr Harland Hayward (Lord Strathmore) feels responsible to the smugglers on the coast whose network he has to use to honour his deal with King. He provides medical care to the smugglers, who risk injury or worse from an increasingly aggressive Captain Buhler and his armed forces. The daughter of a smuggler, Katherine Wright has recently returned from the continent and is determined to extract her father and brother from smuggling before they are killed. She is very suspicious of Harland and his motives, until she gets to know him better and partner with him on rescue mission. I enjoyed Harland, but I LOVED Kate. She is smart, incredibly courageous and very loyal. Don't underestimate her...I did at first! I enjoyed getting to know her better as the story unfolded and delighted in her unassuming cleverness with King and others. I thoroughly enjoyed the true partnership that developed between Harland and Kate.

This can be read as a standalone story, but it helps to know the characters from the first two books, so I would recommend reading them first.

Katherine Wright is sick of the smuggling business. It has nearly cost her brother and father their lives and she wants them out of it for good. But, how can she convince them to leave it behind. That is where Harland Hayward enters the picture.

Unbeknownst to Katherine, Harland is also in the smuggling business. He uses his connections as a baron and a physician to get away with it. Harland is just in it until he repays a debt to someone. When that someone demands he rescue four foreign prisoners and get them home alive, Harland involves Katherine since she is a skilled surgeon. They have no idea the amount of trouble they are about to get into. Find out what happens in A ROGUE BY NIGHT.

***SPOILERS***
I enjoyed Harland's character quite a bit, but in some ways Katherine was the stronger of the two. Not only does she stand up to everyone around her, risking her life on more than one occasion, but she's willing to go head to head with King to free Harland from his debts. I enjoyed the back and forth between Harland and Katherine. I loved how patient he was with her. The scene where Katherine thought he'd left without her was heartbreaking. I'm so glad things turned out the way they did. Author Kelly Bowen's A ROGUE BY NIGHT gets a 3.5 star rating from me.

I love Kelly Bowen’s books. Within a matter of minutes I’m completely swept away in a beautiful and compelling journey with characters that quickly pull me in until I’m lost in their journey and I completely forget the world around me. I’d been anxious for Harland’s story since the start of this series. He was involved in something secretive and I was dying to know more. I knew his story would be outstanding, but I was still amazed at what a thrilling, seductive adventure it turned out to be.

Katherine Wright was a gifted healer and the daughter of one of the most intrepid smugglers in Kent. Though her whole family had survived on the smuggling trade, she’d hoped that would change. But the end of the war left families struggling to survive. Food, shelter, and medicine for her ailing father took coin and they were paid handsomely for goods by an anonymous entity in London.
Harland Hayward, Baron Strathmore was a doctor and a wealthy widowed baron. He spent his summers in Dover and saw to the county’s medical needs while there. It was also the perfect cover to bring illicit cargo from across the English channel, an alternate lifestyle he’d led out of necessity to save his family from ruin. One he’d also managed to keep hidden. Until now.
When Katherine’s brother is shot during a smuggling venture, Katherine is surprised at the doctor who happens to show up when most needed. A doctor who would come to strange places at strange times and not ask questions made her more than a little suspicious. And the fact that he was a titled gentleman only added to that suspicion. Rich, titled men didn’t labor in such professions. Katherine didn’t understand him. And she didn’t like what she didn’t understand.
When circumstances require Harland and Katherine to work together in an unusual and dangerous smuggling venture, they’re faced with an awareness and attraction neither had felt in a long time. An awareness that made them feel emotions they didn’t want to feel. Emotions made one discard judgement for blind devotion. That kind of distraction was dangerous.
Katherine and Harland were such perfect soulmates for one another. Both Katherine and Harland were living mired in the heartache of their pasts and the fear that their undeniable attraction to one another would only lead to a repeat of that pain. But the more they were together, the more they found themselves wanting things they’d promised themselves to never want again. As much as I enjoyed the tension of them trying to resist their building attraction, I loved them most when they were able to finally trust each other and work as partners, allies, equals. Through that trust, they were able to let go of the hurt and the hate of the past and replace those feelings with hope and happiness.
There’s so much to love in this story. The passion was sizzling and the dangers they encountered only added to the tension and excitement of their relationship. I love how strong Kelly Bowen’s characters are. Katherine was fearless and clever. She was the perfect partner for Harland. They both had unflinching courage under fire and were loyal to those they loved, willing to go to any lengths to protect them. And last but not least, I loved getting to see King again. I have been so anxious for his story ever since Ms. Bowen’s Season for Scandal series. I hope his story comes soon.
Fans of this Devils of Dover series will be thrilled with Katherine and Harland’s story. If you love breathtaking passion mixed with a fast-paced adventure and danger, you’ll be swept away with this beautifully vivid and exquisitely written read. Thanks to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this riveting story.

I loved Harland and Katherine's story!!

Katherine grew up being a smuggler, but left and made another life for herself. Upon returning home, she is once again caught up in the local smuggling ring. When she meets the new doctor, she is intrigued, but can't let him find out what she and her family are apart of. But why does the man keep turning up everywhere she goes?

Harland turned to smuggling to keep his family's struggling business afloat. But he made a bargain with someone who needs him to keep at it even though his finances are back where they should be. As the unknown head of the local smuggling ring, his job as a doctor allows him to travel the countryside at odd hours and no one is the wiser. But when Harlan needs Katherine's help in London, that all changes.

Neither want this life, but when promises are made, one has to keep their word. Can this couple that has found their way to one another get their HEA?

I've been intrigued with Harland since the series started and was so excited to get his story! He was always sneaking around in the other stories, so you knew he had a lot of other things going on in his life. I loved that Bowen paired him up with another doctor. Female doctors were not the thing back then, so Harland was also perfect for Katherine because he saw the need to allow women to learn "trades" that were normally thought of as being male dominated.

I've throughly enjoyed this series, so I'm hopeful that Bowen is not done with it. Regardless, I'm excited to see what she come up with next!

The story takes place in Dover a few years after Waterloo. Dr. Harland Hayward is a doctor, ex-field surgeon and a Baron. He meets Katherine, a midwife and surgeon, when a smuggling operation goes bad. The respect, admiration and desire between the two was honest and refreshing. The dialogue was smart, the tense moments when danger was near and the romance were well written.

This is the third book in this series and a big improvement over #2. My only objection was the off kilter time period. At times it felt like the story took place in an alternative history.

Thanks to Net Galley for an advance copy.
