This book is about Leona, a woman with a secret past. She has a partner, Scott, who she dearly loves and a daughter, Beth, she would do anything for. She has a quiet, happy life, but Ria is haunting her again. Who is Ria and what happened that Leona can't forgive her for?

I loved this book. Anyone who has been in an abusive relationship (emotional or physical) can relate to the fear Ria has on a daily basis. The author did an excellent job portraying this in her book. It feels like a true to life story about the toll abuse can take on a person, and the difference it can make to have a partner who properly loves you. She also did a great job describing the struggles that teenage Beth was going through as well. This book had lots of twists, turns, and surprises. Highly recommend!

I have been a regular reader of Wendy's magazine fiction for years so was keen to see how her first novel would turn out. Would it echo her usual family and romantic themes or venture out in new directions? Definitely the latter! The novel has an incredibly strong sense of place and is so obviously set in an area the author knows like the back of her hand. All the scenes in the fells and quarry are so well described I could see them. From early in the story it is clear that Leona has had a troubled past. She is overprotective of her daughter to the point that the poor child is not encouraged to make friends so has none, leading to a horrible and persistent level of school bullying that I found quite upsetting. Leona is holding back in her relationship with partner Scott too. Slowly we find out more about the past and her one time friend Ria. Domestic violence and fear rear their ugly heads. There are some big surprises in this book and some quite scary moments too. I can't say more without dropping spoilers into this review which could prevent future readers from unravelling the mysteries and enjoying this tense and well told story to the full. One last thing: excellent copy editing! I found only one typo where the word imagine appeared as image. It is unusual but extremely gratifying to discover a virtually faultless book when it comes to spelling and grammar. Well done to Wendy and the Bookouture team for that.

When I saw this book up for request on Netgalley I knew it would be one I'd enjoy. Thrillers are my all time favourites and this book had me flying through the pages to find out what happens in the end.
I cannot praise this book enough! I finished it in a matter of days. It had the most brilliant story line and my heart was racing as I was reading. It kept hitting me with twist after twist, and even when I thought I'd figured everything out the story would turn unexpectedly and make me second guess myself.

The story is set in the Lake District and with the authors beautiful description I felt as though I was really there with the characters.

I loved the characters in this book, the story is seen from both Beth and Leona's point of view and it was interesting to see how Beth reacted to her mother's secrets and to see how Leona was trying to protect her daughter. All characters in the book had such strong emotions that Clarke was able to really make me feel for them.
This book hooked me so much that I didn't want it to end. There's nothing bad I can say about it.
With a beautiful setting, real characters and a story line you will never see coming I have to say it's the best thriller I've read this year.
I will definitely keep on the look out for more of Wendy Clarke's books. I'd recommend What She Saw to anyone who loves a good page-turner. I'm also definitely going to recommend it to friends and family.
Trust me, you won't be able to put this book down.

What She Saw is a gripping, page turning thriller , mystery that will keep you turning the pages and saying just one more page.

The author slowly reels you into the life of Leona and her daughter Beth ,who Leona is over protective with . Or is she ?

Even though a lot of the suspense is towards the end of the book , I still found myself wanting to find out what was going with Leona.

The story starts to unfold and then you are more than hooked. All the characters were portrayed well and you can't help but sympathize with them.

Can't wait to read more by Wendy Clarke.

The plot is pacey and unusual with real and likable characters.
This a very addictive novel that I finished in less than a day because I couldn't put it down, looking forward to read more by the author.

This is a good mystery with one of the biggest twists revealed sooner than expected, but with enough foreshadowing that the reader will most likely have figured it out. Which may be why it's revealed earlier than you expect. There are still new reveals and enough action to keep you invested in the remainder of the story, though. It's hard to not give anything away, but the gist of the story revolves around Leona coming to terms with past events of her life with her friend Ria and her current unsettled state. Ria was involved with a man named Gareth who is easy to spot for what he really is.

We also see action from the perspective of her daughter, Beth, who is being bullied and has a very low opinion of herself. She doesn't talk to her parents, as is typical, and escapes into the land to sketch the birds of prey that she loves to watch. Although her parents realize that she's not herself, they don't push too hard to see what's bothering her and that's a bit frustrating, but necessary for the story line.

I mostly enjoyed this book, although the pacing seemed a little off. Most of the book was pretty slowly paced and then the end felt very rushed, with a lot of wrapping up in quick summary in the main character's narration rather than in action. I feel like we should have witnessed more of it. And I have to say that I found the relationship and its resolution between Leona's daughter, Beth, and David a bit unsettling. The age of consent is different here in America than where the story is set, to explain my reaction. And the author doesn't reveal anyone's reaction to her having lied to David - not a spoiler- about her age.

I'll be interested to read more of this author's work and I'd recommend this one to anyone looking for a good domestic thriller.

What She Saw is a dark thriller full of twists, turns and an overall creepy feeling I'm struggling to let go of! The characters are very likeable and believable which is rare in a thriller! I loved the setting of the Lake District, such a perfect place for this to be set. Highly recommended 4/5 because I saw some twists quite early on.

What She Saw by Wendy Clarke is a compelling read that will have you tearing through the pages to solve the mystery that surrounds the inscrutable Leona. This is one that I could not put down.

Leona is living with her partner, Scott and daughter, Beth in the Lake District, a seemingly peaceful existence far removed from the stresses of city life. Yet, from the outset, we learn that Leona is suffering panic attacks each time she conjures images of the elusive 'Ria', and daughter Beth is treated as an outsider at her school, and is bullied relentlessly. Through alternating points of view, and moving between present day in the Lakes, and twelve years previously in London, the stories of Leona, Beth, and Ria are revealed, and the shocking secrets that Leona has tried for so long to keep from her family begin to emerge. Have the ghosts of the past, having haunted Leona all of these years, finally caught up with her?

This is a gripping story, and my spine tingled more than once with tangible tension. There are just enough twists and surprises to make this a fun, yet nail-biting read. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

This was an exciting triller that I will not soon forget. Had some difficulty falling asleep having read it. The writer depicts some super stressful situations that have a significant impact on the lives of the characters. I highly recommend this amazing book.
