Like any great book, within the first few pages, I understood the world, and was cheering for Jude in her adventures and challenges. It was a great book and I look forward to reading more by Holly Black. Thank you!

NetGalley made it so difficult to even open this file just to read an excerpt (half an hour, twice) that I have given up trying. Unfortunately, that means I’m not going to include it on the Hugo ballot. Utter fail, NetGallery!

In this book, the world of Faerie coexists just out of the corner of your eye from the world of humans. For the most part, humans are completely unaware that Faerie exists.

This book shows how humans are treated by Faerie. Faerie has magic, of course, and most humans within its realm are ensorcelled. Most are sent home to the human world at the end of their service, little the worse for it.

And then there is the human Jude and her twin sister Taryn.

This is Jude's story. And the Cruel Prince is a Faerie prince.

Based on the excerpt this seems to be a fine Holly Black faerie book. There are a lot of similarities between them to me. I enjoy them all when I do read them, but I wouldn't necessarily seek them out. I think if they had been around when I was a teen, I would have loved them very much.

I read the excerpt, and there are some interesting ideas there, but it wasn't compelling enough to make me want to seek out the book to finish it. The characters felt flat and I didn't really care enough about what happened to any of them to keep going.
